Putin will leave having made no commitments or concessions. Trump's propaganda machine will congratulate him on once again being a master deal-maker, which is ultimately the only performance review he cares about. The actual situation on the ground in Ukraine will continue to incrementally worsen. At some point in the future it will become obvious that both Trump and Putin were happy to chip away until Ukraine can no longer function as a sovereign state, at which point the territory will be divided up largely in Putin's favour, placating Trump with just enough exploitation rights to convince his base that he's pulled another heroic feat of negotiation. | |||

If you look at things in a logical way rather from an emotional impulse, things become a lot clearer. As for why Zelensky needs to budge, again logically he has lost the land and will not reach a position of military dominance over Russia. He can as he is doing now, keep sending his able bodied to the frontline, while crippling the country with decades of debt. Or he can negotiate a deal that will need to be on Putin's terms. He has lost the land, if Ukraine feels so strongly about this loss they need time to rebuild and form an offensive that will deliver that outcome. | |||
