I am sure not so long ago there was a big hoo hah about a desperate shortage of nurses and midwives and never going to be able to train enough, now it seems we have trained that many not enough jobs for them. Must be the fault of the cons as labour surely not been in charge long enough to train them.

It's now up to labour to give them all jobs ?

Maybe cut back on the millions of admin staff and employ more nurses

The number of people studying to become nurses has collapsed in every region in England, putting the government’s plan to rescue the NHS at risk, new analysis by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has revealed today [Monday 28 October].

Latest regional data from the university admissions service UCAS shows the number of people accepted onto nursing courses fell by up to 40% in parts of England between 2020 and 2023, as the College renews its call for a new plan and better financial incentives.

The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan aims to grow the nursing workforce from around 350,000 nurses to around 550,000 in 2036/37. However, the RCN’s analysis shows the plan is not yet affecting numbers, with just 1,000 extra people a year currently forecast to start nursing courses in 2029 compared with a decade earlier.

There are currently over 31,000 unfilled nursing posts in England’s NHS.

From the NHS website...

Data from NHS England show a vacancy rate of 6.0% (25,632 vacancies) as at 31 March 2025 within the Registered Nursing staff group (which includes midwives and health visitors). This is a decrease from the same period the previous year when the vacancy rate was 7.5% (31,294 vacancies).

Please note that these data do not indicate where vacancies are filled by temporary workforce.

It's Ok again today, the source was the ITV news yesterday morning where they reported there were thousands of nurses just gradated but no vacancies for them but then this morning they are reporting there is a shortage of nurses again so hopefully their training won't have been in vain and they will find employment.

rotationary posts for nurses, ot's, physios etc are usually organised at the start of august with a start date of september. this takes into acount courses such as masters, PgDip etc which have a slighty later finish and graduation date.

rotations for medical professions such as resident doctors etc usually happen a month earlier.

Graduation dates are different for the same courses at different universities.

Coventry, Sheffield Hallam and Chester graduate in November. Leeds graduate in December. Birmingham City uni graduate in January but the other Birmingham unis graduate in July. Wolves nurses graduate in September.
