"It’s all over social media that a school in Greater Manchester is banning skirts from their uniform policy. Another article I read moments earlier on FB was a 12yo girl sent home from a school in Rugby for wearing a Geri Halliwell style Union Jack dress on culture day. The school described it as “unacceptable”. Erm……. yeah 🤣" I have read the pupils were told to represent their culture with cultural attire and a speech, only one pupil was not allowed to participate in culture day, I ask what is British cultural attire. The pupil at the center of this has been invited to London to give a speech in September on free speech.

"Surely they can’t stop boys from wearing skirts? Isn’t that transphobic or racist or something?" Would be interesting to see what they did if a boy did turn up in a skirt.

"Not allowing someone for wearing a union jack dress was such an idiotic move. But goes on to show the level of ideological influence in the most important institutions of the country." Trying to make her feel ashamed to be British.

"After listening and chipping in with my niece and her mum, I don't blame schools for banning them. My nieces school uniform policy states, it must be above the knee. The niece reads that as just below her arse, to make it worse, the school won't enforce their own uniform policy." I agree about skirt length, I’ve taught in schools and girls can take the piss. But a school’s inability to enforce their own policies shouldn’t lead to a general ban of an item of clothing. I bet female teachers will still wear dresses and skirts.

"She was sent home for wearing a Union Jack skirt on, wait for it: DIVERSITY DAY!was cultural day" I stand corrected. So one culture was banned. There's a name for that...its called discrimination.

"Thinking beyond the headlines, how much leg was the union flag dress showing? The school simply said it was 'unacceptable' and if the dress is anything like the crap Google images shows up then it's probably a bit too short." Good point. "I haven't seen what she was wearing, but she was probably asking for it, with a dress like that".

"Thinking beyond the headlines, how much leg was the union flag dress showing? The school simply said it was 'unacceptable' and if the dress is anything like the crap Google images shows up then it's probably a bit too short." There are pictures in various rags. The dress was slightly below knee-length, with no cleavage.

" There are pictures in various rags. The dress was slightly below knee-length, with no cleavage. " Exactly. It's a weird question, when the answer is easy to Google and the question implies judgement.

"Surely they can’t stop boys from wearing skirts? Isn’t that transphobic or racist or something? Would be interesting to see what they did if a boy did turn up in a skirt. " Should be all right if they wear cycling shorts underneath or,even, over the top..

So you would agree with the school that the Union Jack is unacceptable?

"I know we're not in Australia but even though they have no uniforms, pupils aren't allowed to wear anything sleeveless, which this dress was" #1 most schools in Australia have uniforms. #2 The issue of sleeves is usually one of skin cancer from sun exposure. Most primary schools also have a "no hat, no play" rule, as well as other similar sun-blocking clothing rules. You cannot really compare.

"I know we're not in Australia but even though they have no uniforms, pupils aren't allowed to wear anything sleeveless, which this dress was" If you look to the USA and France, both of which often have no uniform rules, sleevelessness is common.

"Not allowing someone for wearing a union jack dress was such an idiotic move. But goes on to show the level of ideological influence in the most important institutions of the country." Apparently two other pupils at the same school were not allowed to celebrate their culture. One had a flag showing the cross of St George, one had the Welsh flag.

Perhaps English will be taught next term...as a foreign language.

"Regarding the union jack dress incident. It seems that the school sent a letter out informing parents about the cultural day. In the letter it stated that no football shirts or flags could be worn. Also, parents were asked to return the letter and inform them what their child would be wearing. The girls father failed to return the letter. It appears that the father set his daughter up too create this story. Some locals said that the father is a Tommy Robinson fanboy. The father seems to have achieved his goal as his daughter has been invited by Tommy Robinson to speak at an event. In all the MSM articles I looked at about this story they all looked the same without any comments from locals. I'm only going by comments of people who have children at the school." Someone else was also sent home for wearing a flag. GBNews etc aren't interested in what actually happened. The purpose is to generate outrage amongst their audience.

"The pupils were asked to wear cultural attire that represents their culture. I ask the question what is English cultural attire." I googled it for you: "English cultural attire is characterized by classic, practical, and timeless styles, often associated with the British countryside and heritage. Key elements include t jackets, flat caps, and wellington boots, reflecting a focus on quality, durability, and a connection to nature. "

" the girl in question wasn't wearing a dress representing the english flag though. she wore a union jack dress, the flag of the united kingdom of great britain, a 200 year old concept ... and unlike yoghurt, britain has failed to develope a culture in that 200 year period .

Another article I read moments earlier on FB was a 12yo girl sent home from a school in Rugby for wearing a Geri Halliwell style Union Jack dress on culture day. The school described it as “unacceptable”. Erm……. yeah 🤣" Judging by other posts, wearing flags was prohibited and the pupils were told so. If correct then perhaps her choice was not a good one though she may argue that the dress just showed the flag but was still a dress. However sending her home seems a bit strong. Hopefully the school were even handed in this and applied the same outcome to any other pupil showing a flag of any country
