Reeves budget

The biggest spending spree since ww2,with public spending set to increase 6% yet no figures for tax intake increases to cover this spending. Higher than Brown and Blair.

The last time such increases were made under Healy/ Callaghan, the IMF had to bail out the UK because of the Sterling crisis.

Not sure how you set record cash increases for NHS given the increases during covid.

Zero based review of spending ( a reform policy they stole but won't implement) but it sounds nice.

Manchester Liverpool railway to be built....since 2015 still awaiting building strategy.

£10bn that won count toward public debt flr new homes. Not sure how that works. More PFI contracts typed for builders?

£30bn. For nuclear.seemingly the majority at Sizewell so a re announcement of tory policy?

No use of asylum hotels by 2029. One wonders how that occurrs without leaving echr or decoupling it from our laws.

Nhs spending to increase 3% per annum. Currently at roughly 9.5% of uk GDP. If uk GDP doesn't increase significantly. This will see it rise to 10.5% of gdp roughly.

Worrying times for the public finances as the deficit as the uk looks to breach 100% by the end of this Labour government.

The budget will be in October, that is when the fanfare becomes the reality of how she intends to pay for all of this.

My gut says she doesn’t know yet. Too many promises, not enough room to manoeuvre. She also has no wiggle room for the BMA and train drivers, that is going to bite...

To be fair, Labour seem to be taking a long term approach to growing the economy and promoting prosperity. A change from the knee-jerk populist policies we saw from the Tories (now from Reform). This is a refreshingly mature approach to government, and maybe for once we should applaud it.

Had they started this long-term approach as soon as they got into power, I dare say they'd be in a much better position now. Sadly, their current record leads me to feel that their long-term plans might not last quite as long as they say they will.

Today was announced a 0.3% drop in the economy in April so even more ground to make up. The BBC reporting that Reeves is now not ruling out tax rises and that we are in line for big council tax rises. Still at least the Sun is shinning

Spot on, we all knew his no hike on working peoples taxes was nonsense.

He was gifted a 14 year old tailcoat to hang off that gave him immunity to scrutiny.
