Labour's new relationship with China 🇨🇳

Sir Kier's Government seems intent on improving and expanding trade and diplomatic relationships with China.

Is he right to ignore China's role in the Ukraine war, its unleashing of Covid on the world, the ongoing erosion of human rights in Hong Kong, the likely invasion of Taiwan, its appaling treatment of the China's Muslim population and the many security threats posed by Beijing ?

Is it worth it to get a few crap wind turbines and solar panels on the cheap, or has Sir Kier got it all wrong again?

SKS does have shockingly bad judgement.

China is the emerging world dominant power - a trend accelerated by Trump's diminishing of the USA. It makes sense we engage and work with China. We can bleat about human rights - but where has that got us? Invaded on a daily basis by fake asylum seekers aided and abetted by criminal gangs. China wouldn't tolerate that, and rightly so. Let's not be mugs.

I very much doubt he is bothered what you think. But trying to spell his name correctly might make him take more notice?

I guess all international relations involve conflicts of interest?

Good point about US power. What is there's a US-China war over Taiwan though?

2 tier doesn't have a clue what he's doing. We've all known his party cosies up to China though. It's no surprise.

China hasn't emerged as a dominant power, they have been that for decades.

Their power is built on IP theft, state subsidised dumping, and a longterm strategy to trap other nations in debt and dependency to them.

This is a global reach across all continents.

I lived and worked in China for a decade, and there's much in what you say. But they are also smart, ingenious and incredibly hard working. The West underestimates them, and have fuelled the points you make by greed. If we treat China as an equal, the relationship will be more balanced. I think Labour are right to reach out.

I'm not disputing the citizens of China are hardworking, the political motivation that drives that hard work is my concern.

I think there was an era that China was underestimated and that has already come to bite, and the reason I believe Starmer and others across the UK are blindly out of step.

There is a real reason Huawei was pulled from supplying the 5G network. The BRI is a slow burner that is destined to elevate Chinese influence even further. Taiwan is going to happen, and the South China sea will suddenly become smaller. We think Russia is a problem under Putin, Xi is shrewd and laying the groundwork, who comes next?
