"I’ve seen an MP post on their social media that as part of the trade deal with India, Indians coming to live here won’t have to pay National Insurance for 3 years. But I’m guessing they will enjoy all the benefits NI was designed to help fund. " Surely that can’t be allowed to happen, I mean, really? ![]()

Interestingly, people who come to Belgium under these terms cannot count those years towards residency for the purpose of citizenship.

"According to the BBC report the NI thing works both ways so includes Indian nationals relocating to the UK and also British nationals relocating to India. Perhaps the trump tariffs have focused the minds of the negotiators to get this over the line. Not sure if it's a full blown trade deal but have read that it includes services which are important " Will British workers benefit by relocation to India? Quick calculation in my head says no.

The report only said how it works. Sounds like it is for those relocating temporary when the company they work for set up a facility in another country and staff are sent to support it. The place I work has facilities in other countries and some are sent there for 1 or 2 year assignments. They still get paid and taxed via the UK office. Hopefully more details of this deal will emerge so we can see if any good or not

"Presumably the scheme is to allow Indian companies to set-up low cost manufacturing bases in the UK using cheap labour. It's hard to see a dual system of wages working well - it will fuel resentment (on both sides) and could be bring petty crime." Why petty crime?

Because you'd have a cohort on Indian wages trying to live on UK costs. It's a recipe for criminality.

"Starmer signs trade deal. India bombs Pakistan. Labour’s voters won’t be happy. I wonder if the conflict will hit the British streets. Starmer certainly has the Midas touch. The trade deal looks like another opportunity to flood the UK with more immigrants, and lots of cheap prawns, clothes and shoes of dubious provenance. Maybe we will now see calls for dodgy Indian prawns to be banned, and for the Hindu supremacist and nationalist aggressor Modi to be barred from entering the UK. Expect massive protests if he comes." I don't see an immigration deal, only the standard reciprocal tax deal, that prevents temporary staff being taxed in 2 countries. This is the regular system, in use between dozens of countries
