West coast US container traffic

It would appear that inbound container shipping from China to the port of Los Angeles (the main west coast port) has collapsed in the last month. Outbound ships to China are reporting large volumes of empty containers.

This means that things are not being imported or exported and once that finally flows through the logistics chains then we can expect reports of shortages on American shelves in a matter of weeks.

Activity around Shanghai appears to have held up so this is purely a US issue - China is still trading with the rest of the world so the pressure is going to be on the US.

Trump has fucked the US economy big time. It all helps him solidify his power forever though. The collapse will make the Great Depression look like fun times, but any popular unrest will just give him an excuse to send in the army. If any large, comparatively wealthy state makes noises about seceding and becoming independent (eg. California) then I would have zero surprise at Trump nuking one of their towns just to make a point...

Before someone says that it's illegal for him to do any of that, he's been well past illegal for some time. He hasn't bothered getting congressional approval for anything he's doing. He's now at arresting judges who he doesn't like...

I'm surprised at the stretch from Chinese goods slowing down as a result of tariffs, to nuking a town in California.

"The USA will buy Chinese products through other countries and not direct from china, the UK buy oil from Indian refineries refining russian oil. "

So you are suggesting the USA will break its own rules?

Also… that still forgets the fact Trump put a general global 10% tariff on all incoming products… so it’s still going up!

Usa corporations will find ways around the Chinese tariffs along with Chinese corporations finding ways around the USA tariffs.

From my understanding, which could be wrong.

If imports from China are being made to specifically export the product to the US, the country that is exporting into the US would face steeper tariffs.

Basically under WTO rules, whenever anything is made or shipped, you have to put down where the product was actually made precisely to prevent circumventing

With regards to the example the poster gave about oil…. Even under un embargo, Russia are allowed to sell a certain quota of oil (well below normal levels.. and below market price just so they can keep a government running)

That's where their Customs step in to test the origin and trade tariff is correct. They will dip test as we have done since before Brexit when the EU dictated that we put stronger checks in place.

I’m sure I’ve got loads of Chinese made stuff around my house.

Often there is no choice but to buy something Chinese made.

Where there is a choice, I try to avoid buying the Chinese stuff.

Maybe people need to get used to the idea of buying smaller quantities of locally made stuff even if the price is higher. Rather than buying lots of throwaway Chinese tat.

There is obviously an environmental benefit from buying locally made stuff.

Either we can continue down the road of buying everything from China (that way serfdom lies), or we can try and do something about it.

Whether what Trump is doing or the way he is going about it will work I have no idea, but at least he is trying to stop the rot. Our current government is just naively accelerating the trend towards Chinese dominance.

I used to be the general manager of a container terminal. Moving empty containers happens all the time. There is never even traffic in both directions. 7 out of 10 containers coming to the UK get sent to the far east empty.
