Who else is surpiced over le pens sentencing? She is sentenced to 4 years in prison and a 5 years year ban from running for political office, effectively disqualifying her from the upcoming 2027 french presidential election, she can appeal the ban too.

She appeared on french tv and talked about it said that this was "political" to keep her out of her race for frances top job.

What is your view about it and do you also think that this sentencing is politically motivated due to her popularity and chance to win the election?

She broke the law by falsifying documents on the pretext that she employed people for a number of tasks when she didn't.

She gain a few million euro by doing this.

(This was for her party and not for personal gain).

I appreciate that Trump also broke the law and ended up as President but surely, if you break the law you pay the price.

There are videos of her from her past when in politics criticising Sarkozy and other wealthy politicians who she claimed broke the law and got away with it - you can't have it both ways!

Trump, Netanyahu, Ukraine’s former president, and probably many others in high office have had suspicious dealings and evaded the law.

No, it's purely political. Christine Le Guard at the IMF kept her job and was given no sentence at all when she was found guilty of inappropriately authorising funds for her cronies.

If the elites fail to give the masses a viable choice then it's only a matter of time before people organise and replace the regime entirely. France did this very successfully by rissing itself of monarchy.

What is going to happen with FN? They will play the martyrs, and get thousands more votes because of it. If they win the next election outright, it will be the fault of the authorities. Sure they stopped Marine, but her party will have even more to shout about now.

Sure, far right and nationalist supporters want to ignore this and decry that it is political.

Like Farage and Trump, you say it often enough and some people start to believe it.

This will run and run, with people taking sides and ignoring facts that don't suit their agenda's.

We have seen this before and we will see it again.

But there is context. It's nor for nefarious reasons. Unless you have something to the contrary.

The deferral of Norfolk County Council's elections is part of a planned devolution deal announced by the government, which will see existing councils abolished and replaced by new authorities, with a mayor overseeing Norfolk and Suffolk.

Adrian Ramsay, the Waveney Valley MP and Green Party co-leader, called the plans "anti-democratic", and Rupert Lowe, the Reform UK MP for Great Yarmouth, said the move was "an outrage".

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said it would be "expensive and irresponsible" to hold elections for "bodies that won't exist".

Basically, every MEP is entitled to a REIMBURSABLE allowance for a Secretary or Research Assistant, so far so good. But you only get to be an MEP with the support of a political party which you now “owe”; so a typical modus operandi would be for there to be a “Bloggs Research Assistants’R’Us” company set up which invoices you and your mates for needed secretarial services, on the basis of which you get repaid.

And if Bloggs Research Assistants’R’Us just so happens to make political donations to your sponsors well, that’s nothing to do with you, is it?

The Brits were very inventive with such scams (whiter-than-white UKIP especially), Le Pen was just TOO arrogant and didn’t play the game...

Funny you talk about brits doing it because a certain Nigel farage was found guilty by the European Commission of doing the same thing when he was a member of the European Parliament with UKIP and was fined and made to pay the money back

If in France part of the punishment using public money for fraud that you are not allowed to stand for public office, then I have no problem with that!!

Notice that people are not complaining that she did not do it, it’s the punishment

If people think a criminal is better than the rest of us, that’s on them!

Not surprised that much. She and her party have been a thorn in the side of the establishment for a long time and seemed to be on course to upset them come their next election. It was a golden opportunity to take her out of the picture and she gave them that opportunity so cannot complain. The party may get some extra votes from this but I suspect Le Penn is crucial to the party and they will loose far more votes without her at the helm

Marine La Penn actually stepped down as leader of the National Rally in 2022, and then 27 year old Jordan Bardella was installed as leader. So there will be no scramble to replace her. She cannot stand for election, but can still hold a position in the party, and will now have more time to campaign for the party on a national scale.

I think she will secretly enjoy the coming elections, but she won’t let that show, as she complains about state interference…
