Civil Service Not Fit for Purpose

Great move by Cabinet Secretary Pat McFadden to announce a major shake up of the UKs Civil Service.

The Civil Service has been a brake on major reform for decades so good on Labour if they're serious about sorting out the left wing, work from home mob.

Do you agree with Pat, or do you think our Civil Service is still 'gold standard' ?

UK needs a Great Reform Bill to strip back and simplify multiple layers of legislation.

streamlining the service by cutting away the archaic rightwing oldboy public school mutual backscratching elite mob that has dominated and held back the country for far too long with their corruption networks spread throughout whitehall, fleet street, the city and corporate business is great news.

this will allow progressive policies to change things for the better.

Out of curiosity what sort of progressive policies would you like to see implemented?

Right wing? Yer 'aving a larf. I worked for Sir John Manzoni for a number of years (look him up), former head of the civil service. He was and is Blairite, social democrat liberal, slightly leftnof centre. Some of my former peers are Manzoni recruits, all from the same leftie mould. Riding around London between government departments on their fold up bikes, with their Gucci leather satchels, fawning over the BBC and anything vaguely Stonewall or pro EU.

No it isn’t gold standard and no nothing will happen to improve the situation.

The civil service will stop anything changing, as it always does.

Most of the civil service is not based in London…. It’s in places like the north east, Northern Ireland, Dundee, Swansea, Preston ect….

Yep the old right of centre old school tie mob went out with Sir Humphrey.

Most departments today are run by centre left Blairites, as is most of senior management.

Border Force can only work with the laws and rules that they have been given by successive governments.

In what respect do you think they are failing within their allowed SOPs that isn't due to shortage of staff or shortage of legal framework?

Where would you deploy their existing resources and where would you draw the staff from to fill the gaps? (And please do not resort to falsehoods about legions of Border Force officers doing nothing other than drink tea)

The question is: If Border Force failed to detect a stowaway on the outside of a vehicle and allowed it into the country, why would authorities then expect an untrained member of the public to be able to find them? And worse, why fine them £1,500 for reporting it when they did

The previous Head of the Border Force said he actually didn't believe in Borders! This is the key issue, a culture of putting the rights of undocumented economic migrants ahead of Britain citizens.

Sagittarius A

The gap between policy and what is delivered to the public end service user is so substantial it's very hard for me to consider the civil service as effective.

In terms of continuity they have definitely assisted the trend of a widening gap. So far I would say that it borders on them being smiling assassins.

All I can say is that I was very close to a very senior civil servant for a number of years. I won't say which department or what grade but very close to god.

The other thing I learned was the first law of the civil service rule book.

The civil service is both a great institution and also in serious need of a huge overhaul. The people in it generally work hard. They are driven by a mission. The problem is that, at the top, they increasingly lack the skills that are needed in a data driven digital world. PPE is a great degree and a classical education is a wonderful thing but for that to be pretty much the sole education of most of the leadership then you know you have issues. Where are the numbers people? The mathematicians, scientists and engineers? That’s what’s needed and they are sorely missing.

I don't think it'll make any difference.

All it does is give the remaining staff more chance of a bigger pay rise.

Are you suggesting that every vehicle should be stopped and at least given a cursory visual check?

I work in Dover docks within the port infrastructure under the harbour board.

Dover has a throughput of 15000 vehicles a day on average. More during the high season.

Taking a one minute visual check just at Dover on each vehicle would stream the vehicles back to the berths, stop the ferries and create chaos.

Alternatively, if you are advocating an increase of staffing by about 750 to cover this just at one port (we are a 24/7 operation), then where would you get the staff from?

I'm not suggesting anything at all to do with border force staffing or processes. If the border force haven't found a person hiding on the back of a motorhome, why should a person be fined £1500 when they find the stowaway in the bike rack after informing the police?

It will send a message to any other person who finds themselves in the same position, that it is not worth reporting and to turn a blind eye. We would then have another unknown person amongst us.

I guess the simplest thing to do is for everyone to go through the red channel and get their vehicles checked, I think that would alter the mindset of the Home Office

The problem is perception….

Replace the word “motor home “ for truck….

Do we feel the same sympathy for an individual trucker, or the trucking business that would have to pay the same fine?

Now replace the word truck for ferry…. Do we feel the same sympathy for the ferry operator that would have to pay the same fine?

Now replace the word ferry for airline….. do we feel the same sympathy for airline operators that would have to pay the same fine?

The problem is a child climbed into a bike rack on the outside of a motorhome, was obviously aided because the cover was closed and once discovered the person reporting it was fined £1500.

There is no perception bias, doing the right thing was punished.
