Syria: three state solution?

Given the traumatic events over the past couple of days in Syria, it's clear that the Shi'ite and Alawite communities cannot live under Sunni rule. The Kurds are likewise at the mercy of the Turks (who back HTS) and the Druze are feeling quite exposed and vulnerable.

Some have been proposing a three-state solution:

Alawite/Shi'ite bordering Lebanon, a Sunni state in the main, central section (including Damascus) and Kurdish/Druze state extending from Israel along the southern, then eastern border, up to Turkey (Kurdistan).

Probably unworkable, since Turkey would object to any kind of statehood for Kurds, but it is probably a better idea than the current state of "gentrified ISIS" managing the groups that they inherently hate.

At any rate, the "death crawls" and gleeful, depraved orgy of abuse should give some pause for thought as to HTS and its position as "peacemaker" in Syria.

Thoughts about a three-state solution?

I find it ironic that when there was a “wicked dictator” in charge of Yugoslavia (Josip Broz) and Syria (Hafez al-Assad, not the wimpy son), everybody peacably went about their own business, there was tolerance of other religions, respect for women, inter-marriage etc. It was only after the lions had died that the jackals were able to fight over the spoils and the various factions whip up the old prejudices.

Easy to feel superior and smug, but what would happen if law and order broke down in the UK? I’d hate to be a Muslim living in an all-white street, for example...

It's sad that in 2025, different religious sects can't live together peacefully in a common sense of purpose. Their petty bickering and hostility to each other risks the break-up of their country.

All a bit surprising what’s going on there.

I thought when Assad left we were told that Syria would be celebrating LGBTQ+ history month and having regular Pride marches in Damascus.

Now it turns out that the terrorists are running amok killing innocent civilians.

When will the West’s naïveté end?

Exactly! I lived for four years in Sarajevo, a beautiful house in a beautiful street, friendly neighbours who'd bring me lamb for Eid al-Adha, welcomed me as one of their own. But they made sure that a Serb family who'd lived there for years couldn't return, by lobbing a grenade through the window and destroying the house.

And in the Republika Srpska they did the same thing to Bosniak houses...

It appears that the Kurds have bargained with HTS to be absorbed (including into the military), so as to stop the Turkish assault (according to their spokesman). Fascinating, as it has huge implications for the US operations in the oil-rich Kurdish regions.
