Should borough councils in London be allowed to buy up property in other areas, the North west for example to house the homeless immigrants in their own areas ? Putting a financial strain on local councils and communities

Plymouth city council agreed a £50M loan last year for buying up property for the homeless.

Moving people out of area and away from family friends schools etc I’m not sure this is right. Balance this against average London house prices of £500k

This is what happens when the state sells off over 2 million council houses and flats at one time discounts to tenants under right to buy and can’t replace them as 75% of the sale proceeds had to be used for repaying central government loans.

Also private companies and individuals have been buying up huge amounts of properties for years in the north turning them into hmo's and signing contracts to house homeless, early release prisoners and immigrants, It doesn't help first time buyers or local communities

Is it only homeless immigrants they are moving out of their areas or all homeless people?

I would think moving immigrants who may not have a connection to the area would be easier than moving someone who has lived and grown up in the area.

However, I'm not sure how we are ever going to get on top of housing the homeless we have in the UK when we have so many people walking into the country, in the last 7 days 1770 have crossed the Channel in 31 boats.

They will at some point need housing, along with the 115000 who have arrived in the last 3 years.

There was an estimated 354000 people who were homeless, or experienced homelessness in 2024. I believe that number doesn't include the numbers entering by small boat.

I assume the numbers are totally unmanageable, and the blame isn't always councils, private owners - landlords.

It is a huge problem that doesn't have a sliver bullet for housing, or the infrastructure and services that people rely on.

Several cities have are allocated asylum families, Plymouth being one. We have a mosque now.

The hmo thing is not new. Plymouth as over 700 HMOs as a university city.

Big demand for HMOs due to cost of housing. Who can afford £1300 a month rent for a small house, £150 council tax plus bills on £2.5k take home pay.

Bottom of road i live in a terrace of three, four storey (ex hotel) going into 3 x 11 bed HMOs+ three basement flats. £800k investment plus cost of buildings £1.5m. Say £2.5m finished after costs and interest. Out of city developer. 33 rooms plus three flats around £25k pm rent - 12% return on investment.

It shouldn't be readily acceptable as a solution, as it typically exacerbates problems elsewhere. And this includes inflating home prices, making them less affordable for local people.
