Going down the gym to lift the weight thingies or whatever they do there ? Strong in tiddlywinks ? Strong in harsh language ? (no thank you). Strong in empathy ? (yes please). Strong in helping the poorest and most disadvantaged ? (yes please). . It's my personal belief that when *some* people in a nation cry that they want a "strong leader", what they really mean is they want an authoritarian, preferably with some militaristic-bent, to apply pressure to the things they don't like. . They want removal, oppression, discrimination of whatever they feel (or have been indoctrinated to feel) about whatever "bogeymen" of the day is the cause of their malaise. For some, it matters not if that target is the result of a dog whistle by someone else. It only matters that there is a target. A scapegoat to vent their frustrations upon. I would counter that we do not need "strong leaders". We need quiet, thoughtful and empathic ones. Ones whose actions are not broadcast as "sound bites" but whose endeavours are felt like a ripple in a pond. Ripples that bring peace, hope and unity to all. | |||
