I could put up an argument for a dictator but it wouldn't be a very strong one. Besides that "nice" dictator that everyone loves this week can (and almost certainly will) quickly turn into the stuff of nightmares.
So I'll stick with democracy for now. It could do with a few tweaks and would be much better if the major party's didn't bicker as much. In fact taking political party's out of it altogether would be a good tweak. | |||

"I think it was Churchill who described democracy as the "least worst form of government". He had a point because democracy is far from perfect and has plenty of faults. The main one being that it gives us politicians who rarely look further than the next election. Governments try to be all things to all men (and usually fail) oppositions bang the drum and try to make the smallest issue into a national tragedy. Probably the best example in the UK is the NHS. Everyone knows it needs serious reform but both party's are scared shitless of grasping the nettle. More concerned about who they will upset than actually improving the service. Tinker around the edges chuck a few bucketful's of money at it and hope the problem goes away. That seems to be the best either party can come up with. Neither Tory or Labour want to be accused by the other (and they will be) of "tearing apart the NHS". So on that issue democracy isn't working. Democracy also fosters tribalism in the electorate, nowhere more strongly than in the UK. I think more people vote to keep one party out than want the party they vote for in. Yeah I know.

Looking at the state of European politics I’m not sure that would be a good thing."Not often we agree but that is pretty much what I was going to say.
Germany is the prime example at the moment.
Minor parties with disproportionate power and senior ministers from parties that barely one in ten Germans voted for.
Needless to say the government, nicknamed "Traffic Light" (red yellow green) was an embarrassing dogs breakfast which eventually collapsed.
General election next month but it probably won't be much better. The votes will be counted then the horse trading will begin with the possibility of parties polling just over the 5% threshold being part of the government and another party polling over 20% likely to be frozen out.
