Four people stabbed in supermarket in Croydon today.

Sentencing today for the Stockport murderer.

12 year old murdered in Birmingham yesterday.

Is random knife crime getting worse and what can be done about it ?

Should it be harder to buy knives ?

As I said in the other thread yesterday.

Its not just a city problem.

A greater police presence on the streets actual Bobbie's on the beat, small police stations re opened with 24hr access to a front desk.

Yes to all that.

But will it make a material difference to knife crime? Would it have made a difference in any of the above cases?

Not good it happened, yes there have to be more stop and search. I think that nowadays the police have to think twice of who they stop and search with all the red tape too.

It's definitely getting insanely worse.

You have to constantly check your back these days. There isn't a solution.

The thing that is annoying is we keep getting told it's an isolated incident.

How many isolated cases become an epidemic. Every day this week there's been an isolated incident, Birmingham, Luton, Birmingham, Plymouth and Croydon.

There are probably some we're still yet to hear about.

As far as I can see it's an epidemic and Government need to act quick and sort it.

The police unfortunately are there to deal with the consequences. Ring up Devon and Cornwall 101 and you’ll be on hold 30 mins minimum to report something suspicious (not emergency).

We will get to a time when the military are on the streets as a safeguarding deterrent

Knife crime in England and Wales has increased over the last decade, with a 4% rise in the year ending June 2024. This is an 80% increase from the previous decade.

I wouldn’t disagree but how does this resolve the increasing knife crime. What can be done with schools/ youth groups/ previous offenders giving talks etc.

As above has said it’s reported as a series of individual incidents. 49,000 reported knife attacks 2023/2024

Well unless it actually happens we'll never know, it's not just knife crime but crime in general and antisocial behaviour a pandemic.

With decision makers putting too much faith in technology and cameras over actual policing.

It must be over ten years since I saw a police walking around our local neighbourhood and then they were neighbourhood wardens not actual police.

Years ago the Scottish Government changed tact at treated the issue as a public health issue as opposed to a criminal reactory issue. We educated. Had a knife amnesty etc. Knife crime dramatically reduced and as far as I'm aware knife crime in Scotland is still significantly lower per capita than England and Wales.

There are many articles and studies available. Google is your friend here. I'm not doing the research for anyone.

As with most social problems education is the fundamental issue that needs to be tackled. We need to invest in our kids and change the mindset of future generations.

I'm sure the penalty for possession of a bladed weapon in Scotland was made more severe following the amnesty. Police and other agencies went out and worked within youth groups etc encouraging and informing them to give up the weapons and how harsh the consequences would be once the new tariffs were in place.

This kind of thing scares me, I live in a quiet rural town, we still have a local police station, although I can't remember the last time I saw a "Bobby on the beat" We have had a few cases of knife crime over the years and scarily a child has been found with one at school.

I'm not sure that stop and search is the magic bullet people think it is, it sounds like alot of agro for the police for limited results.

A 2023 survey of 7,500 teenagers found that 4% had carried a weapon in the previous year

Another survey found that 3.47% of 14-year-olds reported carrying a knife, with 71.3% of those being boys

4% of 4 million teenagers is a lot of knives. And the two stabbings reported yesterday in Plymouth and Croydon were carried out by men. One of them aged 53.

Not sure the mathes would extrapolate that way and by your own maths, 4% of 7500 is 300, yes that's alot, but that also means 7200 or 96% didn't carry knives.

I remember reading about the Scottish solution and hearing about how effective it was.

Stop and search is a tool that would reduce the numbers of knives on the streets, it is a no brainer.

It is also a simple tool to implement, you place areas already known for knife crime as stop and search areas, and without fear or prejudice the police should stop randomly young and old for a search. If you are in that area be prepared to be searched, and me personally I would feel safer and a little more protected if I was in that area.

What is the resistance to this?

Because for me, the police regularly abuse their powers, and this was seen through the police records that people of colour or different cultures are the lowest represented, but the ones most likely to be searched.

The reasons are many some being low representation of male fathers in the black community, housing and education.

The emotion to belong taking many teens into gangs, crime, which also leads to crime again through lack of cash.

They know the reasons for black knife crime, but yet nothing is done about it.

Their are some charities which work with children in danger of joining gangs.

Which invalidates your first response, if they are carrying knives and in an area that is of high knife crime they should be expected to be stopped and charged if found with a knife.

Yes it should be more difficult (every little helps and all that) but how much difference it would make would be negligible.

Like another poster says, every kitchen is stuffed full of them.

Stop and search would be much more effective and stiffer penalties (that are enforced) for carrying one in a public place.

It does seem to be getting worse and I think we only hear about the higher profile cases where someone actually dies.

How many more are injured, sometimes badly, that are just not newsworthy?

Just asking, would carrying a cricket bat be ok for self defence in these areas. Apparently carrying a knife in these areas would not be considered self defense or a deterrent to others.

I hope you mean all cultures and nationally and not just young black teens.

Because when the police stop high numbers of one race the other races who also carry knives and stab people are not recorded on police records why because it seems the police are to busy searching one race making that race highly represented, and all others low, which I know is not true.

What do you think I mean? I’ve been clear in words, anyone in an area of high knife crime fitting any profile that is actively engaged in knife crime should be stopped and searched.

Why do you keep bringing race into the conversation, nobody is off limits regardless of their colour or race, unless you think minorities should be given a free pass in crime?

If that is the case why?

Because we are discussing SAS and the highest number being searched are of mostly one race.

This race are a minority, but is the most represented within the Leagle system.

Stinks to me."

If the majority of anything is done by any minority, results would always show weighting towards the minority as the most likely.

Why is that wrong? If minorities aren’t the profile, they wouldn’t be stopped and searched as much. For example a profile of people carrying out knife crime might not be anyone over 60 years old, so why stop and search them?

I think you are missing the point of targeting the profile, I’m not concerned who fits the profile if it is accurately recorded.

"Stop and search is a tool that would reduce the numbers of knives on the streets, it is a no brainer.

Young black men are hugely overepresented in London knife crime stats.

We can't keep allowing the same mistakes to happen time and time again. The Southport killer was found with a knife 5 times!!! Gangs are fighting with knives, they need stopping.

I hope you mean all cultures and nationally and not just young black teens.

Again it is not properly recorded that is another reason SAS was stopped

.

Through Leagle actions of the parents and FOI requests solicitors were able to find evidence of police procedural failures, which include failure to give search forms or any evidence, to the person who were search, due to this failure it can only be concluded that the actual figures of people being SAS are much higher that actually stated.

A video camera is a wonderful thing.

couple, us we him her.

Well something has to change and happen NOW not in a year or two.

Too much emphasis is put on not wanting to upset anyone and criminal rights.

What about the victim's?

Fact .

If you are not carrying a knife you have nothing to worry about being stopped and searched.

First issue is we need a few thousand police back on the streets not stuck behind desk's tied up with endless paperwork, the criminal protection service and the lawyer's making much much money from them have the system wrapped around their little fingers.

Ensuring that the police have to jump through every conceivable hoop to gain evidence to convict even if the case is open and shut they still worm their way out of cases on technicalities.

This ties up hundreds of thousands of man hours nationwide keeping police desk bound.

Higher police visibility nationwide.

Harsher sentencing for offenders with a streamlined system.

All schools should include education regardless of where they are children should be shown exactly how dangerous it is, the consequences of an attack on someone and the person caught.

More knife amnesty's.

Make the selling of knives as restricted as selling gun's, yes even if it's a supermarket and your buying a new kitchen knife . Over 21's only and photographic ID must be produced.

If you have to purchase and carry knifes as part of a job chefs for example.

They must be carried in a secure locked container (like a small tool box) and a licence to carry must be produced.

Anyone selling "ZOMBIE KNIFES" should face the same sentences as selling firearms.

Encourage influencers, musicians, artists and anyone who can act as a positive influence on the under 25's to be advocates against knifes.

In areas of high knife crime I would go as far as having a curfew for the under 25's.

Offer rewards for information about people who are carrying.

What/Who is influencing the younger generation to believe knifes are needed and part of the culture?

Shit knives and knife crime has been around forever, I knew a friend many years ago lost an eye in a racist attack he was just an innocent Indian lad walking down the road.

I've been attacked with a hatchet year's ago.

But today it seems like it's beyond anything in the past.

Teens killing teens on what seems like a weekly if not daily basis.

All my suggestions are just that suggestions some extreme some just common sense but unless something actually happens nothing is going to change for the good.

You menchend kitchen knifes, and agree over 21 but that dose not stop theft from homes. The big question is dose a kitchen knife 🔪 realy need a point. I don't use the point or at least not very often. So why dose a bladed knife need a point.

Think about a bread knife rounded end.

"Years ago the Scottish Government changed tact at treated the issue as a public health issue as opposed to a criminal reactory issue.

"

This. It's been proven to work. Google 'Violence Reduction Unit'.

Even if you only try it in London, what have you got to lose?

It's a question of will, commitment and valuing the lives of children enough to steer them away from violence.

It's about caring enough.

No, it shouldn't need to be harder to buy knives. Those that gonna stab people will do it regardless of whether they have to steal them or not..

How bout they just deport all the people who have turned up over the last 4 years & have shown they can't integrate into our society

(F*CK your human rights, if it puts our own people in danger).

Or hold extreme hatred for the UK, Europe & our culture..

Didn't have this problem before or 15 ~ 20 years ago..

"Should it be harder to buy knives"

In France it has become illegal to possess a knife - any knife, never mind blade length, foldable, lockable or even bright pink - in a public place.

And yes, how about fishermen, or a tradesman with his Stanley knife, old Auntie Gladys who's on her way home from Ikea with a new cutlery set?

Well, if questioned by the Police it's up to the owner to give a bloody good reason for carrying a knife. Otherwise the minimum is an on-the-spot fine. And, although no courts are involved, this "opinel-crime" (Opinel is the name of a very old and traditional pocket and penknife manufacturer) results in a police record with possibly serious consequences.

But, like all restrictions and attempts to improve things, the innocent will be inconvenienced and the baddies will carry on as before...

The key word there is 'caring', people don't really care because it's mostly black children stabbing other black children. So all you'll hear are short term solutions that only deal with the crimes. We need a few more "Jodie Chesneys" before long term solutions are considered.

As said above change the design round tip not pointed and 21 to purchase.

Agree carrying a knife in a public place should be band, but so should carrying any item with the intent to harm.

Look at a 12inch screw driver or a large knitting needles when you think about it so meany things can be used as a weapon.

Reminds me of the scene from "Airplane".

The one where the guys carrying machine guns and ammunition belts get waved through security.

Then a little old granny's hatpin sets off the alarm and all hell breaks loose.

Beacuse they are discriminatory by nature, a police officer can stop you and search you because they think you look dodgy, what looks dodgy will entirely fall within that officer's biases. If you want contraband moved around, give it to a white female of any age.

You say stop and search is discriminatory because it relies on officer discretion and biases. But if the statistics show that young black males are disproportionately affected by knife crime both as victims and offenders wouldn’t targeted action in an area known for knife crime that includes stop and search, be a rational response rather than discrimination?

So ALL young black males should be treated as criminals, because a minority of them have been known to commit crimes. Got ya! Say no more.

So ALL young black males should be treated as criminals, because a minority of them have been known to commit crimes. Got ya! Say no more."

You’ve gone in circles without addressing the point you originally made, that nobody cares because it’s young black males stabbing other young black males.

Your words, not mine.

I asked you about the contradiction between recognising the problem and opposing targeted action like stop and search. Instead of engaging, you’ve resorted to a rant.

"Years ago the Scottish Government changed tact at treated the issue as a public health issue as opposed to a criminal reactory issue.

This. It's been proven to work. Google 'Violence Reduction Unit'.

Even if you only try it in London, what have you got to lose?

It's a question of will, commitment and valuing the lives of children enough to steer them away from violence.

It's about caring enough.

The key word there is 'caring', people don't really care because it's mostly black children stabbing other black children. So all you'll hear are short term solutions that only deal with the crimes. We need a few more "Jodie Chesneys" before long term solutions are considered.

If the issue is disproportionately affecting young black males, why do you think preventative measures like stop and search are so strongly opposed?

Beacuse they are discriminatory by nature, a police officer can stop you and search you because they think you look dodgy, what looks dodgy will entirely fall within that officer's biases. If you want contraband moved around, give it to a white female of any age.

How would anyone know just by looking if one person has a weapon or dose not for me it would be best to start searching everyone.

But that is a resource problem so the search is targeted where its belive to where thay are found.

You are going rounding circles with stop and search. It's proved it doesn't work. I pondered a suggestion that has been proven to work and continues to work. It didn't discriminate it educated. As with most social issues education is key!

As another poster mentions have a look at Scotland's violence reduction unit. A multi agency methodology with proven results.

"Four people stabbed in supermarket in Croydon today.

Sentencing today for the Stockport murderer.

12 year old murdered in Birmingham yesterday.

Is random knife crime getting worse and what can be done about it ?

Should it be harder to buy knives ?

"

In my teens, I used to make knives out of steel rules, hacksaw blades, etc. But I used them in my dads garage, as I could never find a stanley knife when I needed one.

The pount I was making is, if you mafe it harder to buy, people can make a knife that can be much easier than buying one.

How can you stop this.
