The average Briton causes 23 times more CO2 on Christmas Day.

Campaigners say consumption such as travel, gifts and food are destroying the planet and the meaning of Christmas.

Emissions generated by each adult by all the travel, gifts, energy, decorations, food, drink and waste associated with the climax of the annual carnival of consumerism amount to 513kg of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), the analysis found. The average daily emissions of a UK adult are about 22kg CO2e.

The ClimatePartner research lays bare the climate impact of the annual celebrations, enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people in the wealthiest parts of the world but which have long been criticised as having been hijacked by marketing promoting mass consumption.

Should Christmas be cancelled in favour of the environment.

Christmas should not be cancelled, but let’s take it back to its roots, none of the massive over spending, no gifts, just getting families and friends together for a day of feasting and celebration.

It's the governments and corporations that need to be accountable and made responsible for the improvements that are necessary, not the regular citizens. Certainly with deteriorating life circumstances, people have every right to be happy, celebrating their relationships and liberty as much as possible. It's sad that undue influence has forced many to compensate for love and freedom, by feelings of inadequacy and increasing their consumption of unaffordable tat etc

Bexley

Certainly the leading day of the year for emitting vile cooking smells over a long period.

Followed later by the farts of the multitude of over consumers.
