Musk/ Trump manage to put their foot in it…

Basically put their foot in their mouth, reneged on a republican budget deal which already needed Democratic Party assistance to go through

Now… if nothing is done by midnight, full government shutdown will start

Maybe that will lessen some of the cravings of some here for musk involvement in uk politics

didn't they torpedo the bi-partisan deal that was going to pass and demand it be replaced with this now failed plan? they aren't even in government yet and they've started the chaos already

This is a pretty normal occurrence, right?

The US shutdown threat is normally down to specific divisions over spending priorities and are par for the course.

Why is this one different, is it because of Musk?

Yeah the US Govt shuts down more often than the British train drivers.

Basically the republican budget was always going to need some democrats assistance because the majority is 7 and there were about a group of 30 republicans that out of principle have said no budget increases that would increase the national debt

So what was agreed was a 3 month continuation resolution to spend at the current rate with extra special money for disaster relief and farming help

And then musk and Trump blew it up!

The interesting thing about the trump musk counter proposal was no new spending… programs like CHiPs and research on cancer, especially children cancer to be gutted ( bit ominous for the “concept of a healthcare plan “ folks … and for the debt limit provisions to be removed (making it easier for trump to give himself and his his billionaire friends a lovely tax cut)

Actually… it’s threatened a lot but doesn’t actually happen very often because of the whole “ you don’t want to get blamed for federal employees not getting money “ thing

So the last one was actually back in 2018…..longest one ever..31 days!

Because when we say… no federal employees get paid, it means no federal employees gets paid!!!

Anyone not considered “essential” is basically furloughed….. no federal spaces open, no federal court cases happening, passports, drivers licenses ect

Those who are considered essential still have to work, but don’t get paid until everything is settled…. Soldiers, veterans, air traffic controllers, ect ect

Imagine living paycheque to paycheque… and then being told.. nope nothing! With mortgages and car payments and various insurances and general living expenses

Irony being that at the moment the republicans have a majority of 9 in the house… and because they cannot get their shit together on most issues and all vote the same way, on most issues there has to be some sort of bipartisanship

As on January 3rd… that 9 seats majority will become a 3 seat majority!!! It’s not going to get any better!

Erm…. Republican house needs to come up with something and set a budget! Which they have not been able to do in this entire session (which is why it’s been CR after CR every 6 months ish)

the president can have a wish list of suggestions, But the American adage has always been “the house hold the purse strings! “

House needs to pass a bill (as a normal majority) then senate gets it turn( which would normally need a 2/3 majority).. only then does it get to the presidents desk to sign something

The House voted against the Bill supported by President Elect Trump, with most of those against being Democrats. But following your logic actual President Biden has no influence over his own party while Trump is responsible for the votes of those who opposed him. OK....

The House voted against the Bill supported by President Elect Trump, with most of those against being Democrats. But following your logic actual President Biden has no influence over his own party while Trump is responsible for the votes of those who opposed him. OK...."

You are not understanding….

The president can propose what budget he would like with the numbers his government have … however in the US it’s the house that act as the treasury and actually proposed any budget build… that’s held by the republicans

The issue for the last 2 years at least is that the republicans can’t within themselves decide on a budget bill that could pass that would not need any Democratic Party support (as there is about a hardcore of about 30 republicans who believe that there should be no more increases in government spending without cutting spending elsewhere as to not increase debt)

The other issue is that the US system has a debt level ceiling so no government can basically go mental

That is why every 3-6 months they pass a CR that saying “we will continue spending at current levels plus inflation.. and then stick in extra money for certain areas as needed… so this one has money for disaster relief for places that were affected by hurricanes

What had been agreed was another 6 months CR extension to take them up to to debt limit

The problem is that the four “corners” (people representing house republicans, house democrats, senate republicans and senate democrats) had all agreed on this 3 month “extension” to allow for further negotiations with a new administration as to what they want their priorities to be

Musk and trump with literally 2 days left blew this up by saying “not what we want!” To which house republicans withdrew bill…

Musk and trump basically rewrote the bill removing some interesting bit and also wanting the debt ceiling “suspended” so they could in effect spend whatever they want

The house democrats. Plus 40 house republicans said no….. bill defeated

Some of the extra spending was taken out… like the money that was suppose to be going to paediatric cancer research … so if you want to call that a win … then… yey!!!! I suppose?

The main thing trump and musk demanded which was the debt ceiling removed, which caused a lot of the fuss in the first place, was also taken out of this bill

And it went through on a bipartisan basis with more democratic votes than republican because roughly the same 40 republicans who didn’t vote for the trump musk amended bill didn’t vote for this one either!

It was basically the same CR that was agreed originally.. roll on the next budget fight in march!!!
