Kier Starmer and Angela Rayner had previously supported compensation for women against state pension injustice, but the Govt has now said it won't pay.

Sensible financial decision or another Labour let down ?

They were free and easy with their words when not in government, now they are faced with the realities of being in government.

Labourlist.org was unequivocal on 7 June 2024. Numerous similar statements were made in the House prior to the election.

Well I suppose all the criticism about raising taxes could have been a factor. They have inherited the cost of the contaminated blood compensation , the postmasters compensation. Priorities I guess.

Then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suggested it was possible that the Conservatives would pay compensation, but former chancellor Jeremy Hunt wouldn’t confirm the government’s position.

Hunt said then: "We want to resolve it as quickly as we can, but there’s no secret vault of money. The money we would pay in compensation has to come from other taxpayers, so we do have to take time to get this fair."

Then shadow chancellor Anneliese Dodds said at the time: "Those women deserve respect, that's the most important [thing]."

Neither party committed to payouts in their 2024 election manifestos.

Labour are going downhill faster than I could have imagined.

Turning their back on the WASPI claims.

Inflation is on the rise again, which was always likely given the pay increases they pushed through. Worryingly, the full impact of those rises has yet to bite, expect more to come.

Tens of thousands of pensioners won’t receive their Winter Fuel Allowance before the end of the year due to delays in processing pension credit requests.

They’re still repeating the same tired messages that dragged the economy backwards when they first came to power, and they are still doing it now.

I can’t see Starmer turning this around, he comes across as a very weak PM. Perhaps it’s time to give Wes Streeting a chance before the situation becomes completely unredeemable

I'm sure you believe that. Why you believe that though, I don't know. The Cass report rejected any studies that came out in favour of using puberty blockers, even though its conclusion (and Streeting's) was that puberty blockers are safe to prescribe (and can still be prescribed) except for trans kids. So what is there about trans kids that make a commonly used drug unsafe? Cass wouldn't know, she'd never even worked in a gender clinic or endocrinology.

This proves Streeting was correct to follow the advice from the Cass report and why he would be a good PM, not afraid to make decisions and is clear on the reasons why.

So your anecdotal experience trumps all previous research, including the stuff Cass refused to include. Right ho, that's all sorted.

Do you seriously think no-one spoke to kids and investigated their feelings and thinking before blockers were prescribed?

It is a bit of both here and they can get away with it because of the way the ombudsman wrote about it

He did say that In his own opinion, that waspi women were not given enough time to make changes in financial planning……. But he also said that in surveys that 90% of women knew about the changes that were coming, which scuppers a lot of the claims bout “ignorance “

This is why people are angry, and listening to her say it I can see why they are angry. Why wouldn’t the Waspi’s have believed her impassioned message of support and doing the right thing once in power.

They were free and easy with their words when not in government, now they are faced with the realities of being in government.

That is true .... For ALL political parties. The moral is do not trust a politician. "

I didn't get a letter.

When I started work I was told I'd receive my state pension at 60. I waited another six years for it. 🤷‍♀️.

Ah like all of us to be honest as the age of pensions has changed over the years.

I am not a WASPI but I don't remember ever getting a letter saying it was changing or whether it was just announced somewhere.

"Yeah. I feel I should be more annoyed about it but it's not going to get me anywhere"

What I have took away from listening to a couple of interviews, is labour voting pensioners are feeling let down by labour.

The message was pretty much, it isn't the labour government they voted for or recognised.

I can't answer that, not being a labour voter and not being a pensioner.

Working in the industry like I did the waspi women can basically be split into 2 categories…. Those affected by the original legislation and those affected by the acceleration of the legislation

For those who were affected by the original legislation (age 65) I don’t have much much sympathy because the original age change law went live in 1996 and the first women not to retire at 60 wasn’t till 2006… and even then the change from 60 to 65 wasn’t till due to happen over 25 years (so it was only going up 3 months a year at a time anyway)

The waspi women caught by the age 66 legislation, this is where I do have a lot of sympathy… just because basically 7 years in.. instead of equality happening of 25 years, they decided to complete it over 15 years.. plus the 65 to 66 years would be completed over 12 months

We were finding that some waspi women who originally going to retire at worst at 62.5 to 63 were in effect going to retire at 66 with in literally 2 years notice!

It’s the people in accelerated group 2 that in my mind should get any compensation… and actually it would not be a big group of the overall total waspi women

"Kier Starmer and Angela Rayner had previously supported compensation for women against state pension injustice, but the Govt has now said it won't pay.

Sensible financial decision or another Labour let down ?"

A good example of a party in opposition saying whatever it takes to get elected. Then bit by bit row back on previous statements. I can understand the WASPI women feeling let down after the party that said they should be compensated finding out that once in office they fail to deliver. Still just throw them on the pile with the pensioners who got shafted

5 months in and reality setting in fast

Labour are well truly stuck, they delivered a crap budget which has weighed on the economy, all their manifesto pledges will be wound back within 12 months.

"Then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suggested it was possible that the Conservatives would pay compensation, but former chancellor Jeremy Hunt wouldn’t confirm the government’s position.

"The government failed the women who were born in the 1950s, they stole their pension, that contract, that agreement that they thought they had and then accelerated it so that those women didn’t have the chance to prepare for that. We said we’ll right that injustice. And within the five years of the Labour government, we will compensate them for the money that they’ve lost." Angela Raynor

Indeed. Also from the BBC article they remind us of the following: Before this year's general election, several senior Labour figures had backed the campaign and Sir Keir himself signed a pledge for "fair and fast compensation" in 2022.

It's amazing just how bad this Govt is at politics. Every single policy seems to blow up in their face, their comms is a disaster. It was obvious Labour would win power from at least 18 months ago, plenty of time to manage expectations about what they could or couldn't do in Govt, yet they went on making promises they've broken while hiding deeply unpopular policies like the Winter Fuel cut. Now they just look shifty and incompetent.

I think so much of this stems from Starmer's awful personal judgement .

This reminds me of the Lib Dem’s student fees fiasco.

One of the main things voter hate is hypocrisy.

This government just seems to make one self inflicted wound after another.

I thought this was going to be the 1970s do over, but they seem to be determined to shred any suggestion of competence.

Competence was Starmer's main selling point. If he lacks that then his time in office will not be long.

Pretty sure this decision alone will cause a hung parliament at the next election.

Really poor from labour to just dimiss the case, regardless of if it's even remotely a feasible option to compensate these women with what the ombudsman has recommended (a few grand each). It's like they don't care to be in government in 5 years

If you're serious, £50m will pay about 15000 women what has been advised by the ombudsman, there are possibly 100s of time that amount affected. Context is key

The government is raking in money we live in a 24/7 working society. So they can pay the women. Back in the 70's they might have point, but today there's no excuse. And at least the money they get will be spent on utilities, goods and services in this country, so it will boost the economy, everyone's a winner(Hot Chocolate).

Was this not just a part of equal rights. When I started work at 15, I was told I would retire at 65 now 67. Yes I'll have to work an extra 104 weeks. BUT I have all ready paid in enough to have a full pension. At 67 so even through paying in an extra 2 years I get no more for it. So all a piss take. But it is what it is.

When I started work my personal pension plan had an (earliest) retirement date of 50. Like many with a pension plan mortgage i paid in higher contributions to draw the tax free cash at 50 when the mortgage would be due for repayment. Gordon Browns government changed the retirement date of personal pensions to an earliest of age 55, so another five years mortgage interest payable until the tax free cash could be drawn out. He also stopped the tax free dividends in all pensions to reduce the growth rate.

"Labour are going downhill faster than I could have imagined.

Perhaps it’s time to give Wes Streeting a chance before the situation becomes completely unredeemable"

You seem to have a real problem with public sector workers being paid a fair wage. Would you prefer we were given room amd board for their efforts. after a 10 year pay freeze from the tories it is right that these workers wages are being brought up to current standards. Hopefully bringing more out of the trap of having to claim universal credit to supplement their pay🤷‍♀️

The treasury pulls in enough money, in 2023–24, total UK government revenue is forecast to be £1.06 trillion, or 41% of gross domestic product

Everywhere we look they waste a lot of that money.

I have no problem with pay rises when they are at the correct rates and delivered at the right time, based on affordability and agreement.

However, the recent increases were above and beyond what was sustainable, agreed unilaterally! We are already seeing the economic consequences of this throw it at them approach, anticipated rise in inflation and the already happening, pressures on public finances.

As for the claim that public sector workers had no pay rises in 10 years, that is simply not true. Even in years when pay increases were disputed / rejected, pay awards were still made, albeit at lower rates. The issue isn’t fair pay rises it’s about managing to protect against unintended consequences...

You took just the one thing from my post, do you agree with the rest
