I was always led to believe charity begins at home.

In Labour's case it's the opposite.

Presumably the new lot in Syria are no longer classed as a terrorist organisation. I know they were contemplating dropping the status along with others like the U.S. but don't know if it has happened yet

No... apparently they are still terrorists but the UK government has diplomatic contracts with them....so now we do officially deal with terrorists.

I find this abhorrent. The new Syrian regime need to prove themselves.

Splashing the cash on them will prove to be a waiste of money. Watch the human rights dissappear by the New year.

Is he mad?

Lanmmy says he wants new Syrian Govt to be 'inclusive'. He's sending an elite team of Civil Servants to advise them on white privilege and intersectional dogging.

Thanks, yes seen it now. I can only hope that the money is going to a third party like a charity that operates in the region. Giving millions directly to a group still classed as terrorists is not a good look

Just been watching the news about Hospices being on their knees because of lack of funding, national insurance increases for employees etc.

The £50 million given to Syria should have gone to them.

We are talking about Liebour not the tories. And are you so naive to think if Labour were in government during the pandemic, they wouldn’t have lined their own pockets.

The owner of Clearsprings who owns some of the worst accommodation being used to house migrants received more of the foreign aid budget than the country of Ghana.

Charity begins in projecting "Soft Power" overseas.

.

Because that is exactly what the Chinese Government have been doing.

Out best guess is that 2020 official development assistance from China increased to US$4.8 billion in overseas aid. Goodness knows what is is now.

.

The UK government spent approximately 7.2 billion British pounds on foreign economic aid in 2023/24

.

Russia's Official Development Assistance (ODA) steadily increased from $100 million in 2004 to more than $1 billion in 2017. I don't know what it is now, with a "Special Military Operation" to fund these last few years for them.

.

The bottom line is, if the UK don't invest in overseas aid, then our enemies certainly will and they will fill that void instead of us.

.

I don't know what future people are expecting for their children or indeed their grandchildren and great grand-children, but it boils down to who's going to be running the show in 10, 25, 50 years time. Hint : It won't be the USA is my gut feel.

.

If we are to be relevant, then we need to have skin in the game, as they say.
