Labour has promised to build 1.5m homes during this parliament, but the housing minister, Matthew Pennycook, said on Wednesday that hitting the target would be difficult. “Delivering 1.5m homes is going to be more difficult than we expected in opposition,” he told the housing and local government select committee

Rayner is now proposing to tighten up council tenants opportunity of ‘right to buy’ their council property.

That has not surprised me..

The cadence of not being surprised is rather frequent and expected.

Don't know why they did not promise 5 million 1.5 is 300,000 per yer the UK is miles of that at the moment. It needs looking at the same to be said for the age of the housing stock in general, and the state of social housing. But in my book its better to over deliver, than over promise.

This has made Labour look so silly.

Their results will be something that they are evaluated for. It's good that they realize it's tougher than they initially thought, as at least they can better invest in it, to make it an early part of their planning. I'm thinking it's potentially not going to happen but it's right that targets should be above, not below, what may be achieved.

Labour hate the private sector and that is who will be building the homes

They’re already making it difficult for landlords to operate and they’re the ones that fuel most of the supply of new housing

If I’m reading this correctly you are saying, you know they got it wrong, you don’t expect them to achieve, but you support them exaggerating the failure from the get go?

Will never achieve it, average construction worker in the 50s ... then you have projects like hs2. So if your a ground worker, work for balfour for 10 years on the books, pensions etc or self employed in a dodgy home building promise ...

expecially with the rumours about the changes to constructuon card schemes making even less people likely to be working on new build site projects making the red tape even darker red

Bad enough under the Tories, pay every year for this licence/course of 500 pound plus just to walk on a site ... yet see others who struggle to speak english

I think Labour just came up with any old shit in their manifesto regardless of whether it was based in any reality or not.

Small boat arrivals still 1000+ ppl a week

Housing starts down

Employers costs up

cahoots

There are some massive housing schemes planned but building them is another story. Speaking to a builder at a business event yesterday they expect a slow down due to rising costs particularly after the budget. They also forecast the closure of some building companies.

". “Delivering 1.5m homes is going to be more difficult than we expected in opposition,” "

Remove the the words “1.5m homes”, from the statement and it sums up this government.

They’ve had years in opposition and found it very easy to criticise from the touch lines, they are now finding out actual government is a bit harder.

You obviously have never applied for a CSCS card or been on a construction site
