With much panic about women's rights being repealed in America once Trump takes power can we also shed light on women's rights across the world?

Iraq is set to change the age of consent to 9, reports Lilia Sebouai

I understand we shouldn't pass judgement on other cultures but this is nothing less than barbaric

Surely you'd expect the religious institutions of these countries to speak out vehemently against such proposals

This century seems to be the backlash to the last regards womens rights.

Today some men feel they need to ascert their authority over women and old values creep back in as per the Thaliban.

As for Iraq they seem to be on a breeding programme to out populate the West and women's rights aren't important.

It’s the religious establishment that is pushing for this reform based on their interpretation of what true Sharia would be

We should criticise other cultures as well and remember Iraq used to have a government minister who was called the “child thief”.

Just read in the telegraph about Iraqi intention to legalise marriage from age of 9, also women no longer having the right to divorce, custody of children or inheritance. These proposals are abhorrent.

If it is about procreation, then the law shouldn't allow marriage before start of menstruation.

Just a thought, but I bet FGM would be on the increase, or done at a younger age. Girls/women being possessions of men.

I saw Ricky gervais talking about something similar (a country where age of consent is 12), and he was saying it inevitably leads to some guy standing on court saying “your honour, she looked 12”.

Adding to women’s rights around the world

Iran(On the women’s rights counsel at the UN.Criticises west on websites it bans it’s won citizens from accessing) has just announced that it is opening treatment centres (torture centres) for those who don’t wear the hijab and likely will expand to any other women they don’t like

I remember this skit. You have to laugh at the ridiculousness of it

I know the Americans think we (the UK) are odd because part's of their county have consent at 18 so they judge us as being low, and Bahrain has it at 21

Not wanting to impose our collective morals on others is fair enough, but I can't imagine anyone in their right mind thinks NINE is acceptable

It's a minefield now, and though 16 is ours I've heard conversation of age gap being taken into consideration (for example, while 16 is legal, there a lot of discomfort with the idea of a 16 with say a 20 year old or older (whereas when you reach a certain age any age gap feels acceptable)

The reason behind Iran lowering the age of consent to 9 is that Mohammed married his third wife Aisha when she was 6 years old and consummated it when she was 9 years old.

This may be behind the thinking of lowering the age of consent to 9 years old.

I'm not saying that this is the reason but if it's acceptable for the prophet Mohammed to be having sex with a 9 year old then by that thinking it should be acceptable for the followers of their faith to also have sex with 9 year old.

Just for the record I don't agree with this behaviour and I'm disgusted by the thought of it. I'm only suggesting this as a possible reasoning behind this.

I may be totally wrong but Mohammed wed Aisha when she was 6 years old and consummated the marriage when she was 9 years old. Maybe it's just a coincidence...

A quick google search shows this not to be true. Legally, it's 18 in Nigeria. The two lowest legal ages in Africa are Niger and Sudan. Niger is at 13 for male and female, Sudan is 13 for males, 12 for females. Both countries are majority muslim.

150 years ago is a long time, how does that equate to a decision made today.

9 years old, think about that for a second, a 9 year old child, really? I couldn't care if another country think our laws are primitive at least we don't accept its ok to s**g kids.

What happened historically is not a reflection of our societal values today. If Iran bring this about it just shows what a primitive, disgusting society it really is.

I'm sure there's a few countries in the world who would call some of our laws primitive etc150 years ago is a long time, how does that equate to a decision made today.

Why are we in a glass house? We raise the age of consent from 12 to 16 over 150 years ago.

I saw Ricky gervais talking about something similar (a country where age of consent is 12), and he was saying it inevitably leads to some guy standing on court saying “your honour, she looked 12”.

Not in a draconian society , where they aren't even second class, have no rights or protection.

Iran are showing what they think of woman when even considering lowering the age of consent.

"This century seems to be the backlash to the last regards womens rights.

Today some men feel they need to ascert their authority over women and old values creep back in as per the Thaliban.

As for Iraq they seem to be on a breeding programme to out populate the West and women's rights aren't important.

If it is about procreation, then the law shouldn't allow marriage before start of menstruation.

Just a thought, but I bet FGM would be on the increase, or done at a younger age. Girls/women being possessions of men.

Just read on an Oxford law site that there's a drive to reduce fertility and fgm (currently nearly 60% of women having suffered fgm, 60% of them between 4 and 7 years old ) in kurdistan.

That's a good sign, fgm is horrific

When you say a drive to reduce fertility, do you mean a drive to increase the availability of safe sex methods? I'm just clarifying please, to make sure it's right in my head, thank you

Birth-rate, I recall a statement of reducing it to 3 children per woman by 2030.

Wonderful, thanks Amelia

Only 3, bloody hell that's nuts. I know people with 3 and it strikes me as a lot lol"

Oh behave. If you look at most countries histories, childhood was much shorter than today. Then look at the average ages of death. Include how dangerous childbirth was for the mother, and the babies. Take everything in context.

Trying to reduce age of consent to 9 nowadays is barbaric!

"With much panic about women's rights being repealed in America once Trump takes power can we also shed light on women's rights across the world?

Iraq is set to change the age of consent to 9, reports Lilia Sebouai

I understand we shouldn't pass judgement on other cultures but this is nothing less than barbaric

Surely you'd expect the religious institutions of these countries to speak out vehemently against such proposals

Women do well in usa and will continue to do so under Trump, they can handle themselves just as equal to men.

As for Iraq, we the UK walked away from the place it's a hell hole where the corrupt make the laws.

Most of these Goddeses religions are based upon theories about certain practices. There isn't a predominantly female led, priesthood type of religion. Male dominated religion developed from the need by the 'intellectual' class to exert power over the 'Warrior' classes, the kings and Warlords of the past. They wanted to grab power from those that could take it at the end of a sword and had no need or desire to share whatever power they could wrestle away from this 'Warrior' class.

Just another example of woman being denied any rights by men.

I feel as if woman are hesitant to uphold their womanhood for fear of a backlash in relation to being called transphobic.

Sounds to me if they can fight on front line in war then they don't need anyone to do any fighting for them.

The last restriction on women's service ended in 2013 when Defense Secretary Leon Panetta lifted the Pentagon's 1994 ban on women in direct ground combat roles. But under the Pentagon's cautious, phased approach to opening the careers to women, it wasn't until 2016 that women were eligible for every combat job

Aligning with birth gender. But not really a decent term... I am a woman on this side - sounds more like political leanings. I am not a woman on the other side.

I don’t think there is a decent term that can be used that isn’t in some way denying reality which will just be more harmful in the long run for these people

Once you start playing with the term woman then you lose all baseline for what one actually is

I disagree, just stick with woman all other variants should be identified separately but you never normally need to change the name of the original. Mrs x

"Religion has always subjugated woman Mrs x

Are you saying matriarchal religions subjugate .?

Which ones? Mrs x

Any. One cannot assume because there are Goddesses that they wish girl power Most of these Goddeses religions are based upon theories about certain practices.

Mrs x

Class/caste was most definitely the hierarchy of (most) religions. Hinduism - priesthood highest caste, untouchables lowest.

In Christianity in this country you had wealth of the ruling classes, passed down to the eldest son, the second was often persuaded to go into the church. And women, possessions.I think it's becoming more contentious too, with the Woke movement.

I feel as if woman are hesitant to uphold their womanhood for fear of a backlash in relation to being called transphobic.

The rights that our forebears achieved are being eroded again. I'm not saying deny anyone their rights but don't ignore mine as a woman due to the protests of a vocal minority. Woman died for these rights, respect this.

Mrs x

Do you mean woke as in the antithesis of its historical connotations, like Andrew whatshisface? You go onto transphobia so I assume not.

I'm a CIS woman and personally don't care who wants to use feminine pronouns. But DON'T tell me you're a woman if you have no wish in getting your cock removed and don't you dare infringe on spaces where you might see me, or I you, naked! Obvious a generic "you" to a certain sector of transwomen.

The recent news story of Darlington nurses has boiled my piss.I hate the use of the word Cis, it's superfluous, does not better describe anything and is being pushed onto us by a vocal minority.

It's just another example of woman being told that this is how we should see ourselves by a vocal minority.

I'm a woman, nothing more, nothing less do me the same respect and don't refer to me as something I'm not just because it makes you feel more comfortable. Obviously I don't mean you, just in general, rant over.

Mrs x

I can relate. It took me a long time to use the cis word, and I only do so as a shortcut in certain contexts.

Just to state, before I get accused of transphobia, my heart goes out to those transwomen at whatever stage of their journey they're at, who loathe that appendage attached to them because it doesn't align with their female brain. Those people who actually want to keep their penis but grow breasts and use female pronouns., then we must come up with an acceptable gender. I don't know if she-male or he-she are acceptable. You are right an acceptable descriptor needs to be found, without trying to alter already established terms.

Mrs x"

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this one, you are a woman, end of.

For me, if a transwoman wants to keep their male sex, they can be gendered as a trans-woman, if they choose to undergo full surgery, then they can be gendered as a woman.

Maybe that's too simple though.

Thing is it's not fair, to all parties. If you have to transition to become your preferred sex I see no reason you cannot be classed as a Transwoman or a trans man but you are not a woman or a man unless you are born that way and remain so.

I know it must be hard to want to be something else but wanting something doesn't change your reality. You are what you are and that cannot change on every level.

Are you saying matriarchal religions subjugate .?

Which ones? Mrs x

Any. One cannot assume because there are Goddesses that they wish girl power Most of these Goddeses religions are based upon theories about certain practices.

Mrs x

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this one, you are a woman, end of.

For me, if a transwoman wants to keep their male sex, they can be gendered as a trans-woman, if they choose to undergo full surgery, then they can be gendered as a woman.

Maybe that's too simple though. I still think they should be a transwoman, you've only got to look at tge mess in competition sport, you can change your bits and pieces but you cannot change your DNA and the like. It's not fair for woman to be categorised so they'd come up against a trans woman. Have different categories like they do in the Special Olympics, Mrs x

I was trying to be as fair as possible in terms of everyday life.

Sport is a different beast entirely.

Mrs x

There will never be an agreement on that from some quarters. I'd be perfectly happy to see transpeople gendered as trans-man/woman, but it's not something that affects me personally. "

Working in healthcare it's important we know birth sex due to gender risks - a transwoman may still get prostate cancer, for example.

Personally I am not bothered about labels as transwomen post surgery can get birth certificate changed, so legally they are women.

However, they are definitely not women with a cock and surely have to be transwomen at the max. Even then I'd want them to have least started with the hormones.

And for the men who pretend (no not TVs), to get into women's spaces, they need prosecuting.

Or just reward them with free surgery, whether they like it or not
