I think it is a huge historical moment. He has overcame countless obstacles on the way to the white House, he has shown resilience and determination. I honestly hope his leadership brings a renewed sense of unity to the US driving growth, wealth and security.

I'm not sure that is going to be an easy ask, sadly, due to his outspoken opponents who will at every opportunity bring anger and hatred to the table in their bid to remove him.

His trials were of course obstacles, along with assassination attempts and numerous other things. I'm not convinced he will not be faced with even tougher challenges now, however he has shown resilience up this point.

His trials were through the court of the land and he was found guilty.

This is not an insignificant footnote.

You can look at how he won and they can try dissect it but the main factor he won is simple the american people ultimately does not want a woman in charge look at his three election campaigns beats Hilary who was clear in polls and beats Kamala but loses to man in Biden,America will never elect a female president, the republicans know this thats why never field a female presidental candidate

So trump is back, I expect anything he attempts to be criticised, due to him refusing to follow the narrative.

Just watch over the next coming months as trump disagrees with his counterparts exposing the current narrative, and putting back plans other leaders had.

The current narrative of doom and gloom will have to go now as trumpis back and will change that narrative.

I mentioned overcoming obstacles to highlight his resilience, which cannot be ignored.

Now that he is President, the outcome of his convictions are unknown (well they are to me). I expect his opponents will go out of their way to try and make this a top issue to hang him on, but as I have mentioned in other posts, their attacks will probably allow him to wiggle out and walk away......

Ignoring Trump’s victory by blaming gender bias on the US.

Let's overlook democrat messaging and campaign strategy, and blame it on the US population for being sexist

Let me put this obstacle of r-ape in terms you may understand.

He, him alone, cornered an innocent woman and forced himself upon her.

He then ripped her clothes of as she screamed for him to stop. Pulling and hauling at her clothes and her underwear until she was cleared enough for his next act of violence.

Think of your mother, daughter or sister now at this point.

Violating her personal space, her body and her mind so grotesquely her body and mind may never recover.

Not finished with his lust, he then held her as he pulled out his penis and forced into her body and he ignored he screams and tears of pain..

All of this act carried out in his deliverance of him being above the law.

That's the man you think can bring America together.

I feel sorry for you.

Anyway I'm out.

Mandela went to jail too. The world has had political prisoners throughout its history. One expects better of the US I guess.

It’s a shame that the Democrats tried to abuse the system for temporary political gain. The electorate saw through it and here they are.

It's really confirmed that America is a very right wing country.

It's very bad news for the war in Ukraine which in turn is very bad news for Europe and the UK. This is a huge win for Russia.

You think Americans should be more concerned about Gaza than the price of gas and whether they can make it through to their next pay check?

You must be very fortunate that you don’t need to bother yourself with such base concerns.

"I think it is a huge historical moment.

Countless obstacles like being a rapist, election interference, fraud, etc?

His trials were of course obstacles, along with assassination attempts and numerous other things. I'm not convinced he will not be faced with even tougher challenges now, however he has shown resilience up this point.

His trials were through the court of the land and he was found guilty.

This is not an insignificant footnote.

It is the man "Americans" think is best for the job.

This is the key point. Americans 40% of which think the world is about 6000 years old, think Trump is the best person for the job. Even after he proved last time what a disaster he was. "

I think this is where we differ. I avoid viewing other nations as inferior for having different perspectives. The choice of the US president has been made, and while you may not agree with it, that decision deserves respect

Nobody is viewing other nations as inferior (except maybe Trump). And believing the world is 6000 years old isn't "having a different perspective", it's an example of people believing complete nonsense over actual real life demonstrable information.

I don't see why I should respect someone's belief that the world is 6000 years old or their belief that a man who sexually abuses women, and who was a disaster last time around, will be a good president.

I can't argue with your thoughts towards his convictions.

However, you said 40% of Americans believe the earth is 6000 years old. I understand that as they are religious to the point of believing the bible, which you have issue with?

Does religious belief bring into question their ability to vote for a president, in your opinion?

I don't want to read into your replies something that I have misunderstood, which I could be doing.

There has been so many fake predictions over the last couple of months. Calling him ‘Hitler,’ a ‘KKK man,’ the convictions he was handed thanks to the former crooks in the White House. He has been called ‘sexist,’ non substantiated claptrap, ‘homophobic’ no way.

I’m so pleased that he won, and look forward to watching him Make America Great Again…

Yes I guess we can expect Trump to start rounding up his opponents and sending them to concentration camps before the weekend. This is what we’ve been told will happen.

Oh but gas was cheaper so better get Trump back.

I look forward to those who abstained from voting due to the gaza conflict reacting to how he deals with it.

You think Americans should be more concerned about Gaza than the price of gas and whether they can make it through to their next pay check?

You must be very fortunate that you don’t need to bother yourself with such base concerns."

In no way is that what I said at all. I'm taking about two very different voters.

The reply you are responding to was me responding to another poster not you, for clarity.

However:

I have stated he has overcome obstacles, this is a fact, he has. I have not supported or argued against the individual obstacles, you are, I'm not.

As I also mentioned, I honestly hope his leadership brings a renewed sense of unity to the US driving growth, wealth and security.

As I also said, I very much doubt that will happen due to his opponents, anger and hate of him, meaning there will probably be ongoing problems every day that prevent the renewed sense of unity.

If you would like to rant about his conviction, can you find someone that has supported it and go from there?

Kilkenny, but Dublin is more fun

The human race is well on its way to major collapse of population and it's dominance over the natural world.

We're deep in ecological overshoot where our ever increasing appetites for energy and resources is in no way sustainable, and the costs of it are increasing regarding climate instability, pollution and ecological degradation which in turn will lead to major geopolitical chaos and the likely unravelling of an incredibly complex civilisation we regard as normal or even mistake as "the real world".

Things still would have been fairly screwed if Harris of the self serving political class had won, but now we're on a much worse trajectory of it just happening faster.

"I think it is a huge historical moment.

It is the man "Americans" think is best for the job.

This is the key point. Americans 40% of which think the world is about 6000 years old, think Trump is the best person for the job. Even after he proved last time what a disaster he was.

No it's got nothing to do with religious belief, the 6000 years old thing is just an example. If people believe shit like that, they'll believe things like climate science isn't real, and voting for Trump is a good idea.

"You can look at how he won and they can try dissect it but the main factor he won is simple the american people ultimately does not want a woman in charge look at his three election campaigns beats Hilary who was clear in polls and beats Kamala but loses to man in Biden,America will never elect a female president, the republicans know this thats why never field a female presidental candidate

Michael Moore said this about 20 years ago."

Michael Moore has a uncanny knack of predicting the results. He was saying Trumps going to win for a while.

Thoughts = more people hired, fired, hired and then fired with "evidence" on twatter or social boast. There'll be lots of me, me, me and lots of ok Sir as nations realise they either align or depart with American policy on climate, tariffs, NATO, and likely human rights. There'll be gaffs, and greatest hits posted and non-accountability as his Johnsonesque pond widens lining many pockets in the process to the amazement, disillusion and probably shock of those at home and abroad unable to to do anything about it as he's untouchable due to Judicial protection.

The US is about to become a place where women have no rights. Where contraception is illegal. Where white supremacists are openly lynching people of colour. Where all government positions are held by criminals, with the highest posts being held by the ones that have got their tongues furthest up trumps arse.

Ukraine is finished. NATO is finished. From 6th January the American military is going to be under the control of the man who is a puppet of Putin. Globally, we are in the most dangerous position ever. There is now an open alliance between Russia, North Korea, China and other totalitarian states. And the only brake on their ascendency has just been placed under the control of a man who is wholly owned by Putin.

Intelligence has lost to fascism. The lights are going out across the world.

I worry about the Ukraine situation.

If Ukraine falls this could be a potential outcome.

Firstly Ukraine becomes part of Russia so loses its freedom. Which is pretty shit and scary for them.

Putin soon realises Trump will just watch and not defend Europe as he’s isolationist . As are many Americans .

Putin feels confident so decides its time to re -create his longed for old Soviet Union so now goes after either the Baltics or Poland.

European NATO then has to act in their defence .

European NATO will in my humble opinion push Russia back which leaves Putin with the choice, do I give in or do I press the button knowing the US nuclear arsenal is no longer a worry. Would you trust him?

People often compare NATO and the old soviet union as more or less the same thing but on a different side of the fence.

You can however join or leave NATO at will . You most certainly would not be able to leave the Soviet Union or escape Russia’s will.

Taiwan is stuffed as Japan and its allies in the Pacific can’t stand alone in the fight against China .

People may dismiss my view but I’d much rather we all keep sending weapons to Ukraine as opposed to at some point be forced to put our armed forces at risk. Remember a great deal of that spending is on our own weapons manufacturing businesses so not leaving the country as cash.

Kilkenny, but Dublin is more fun

"The human race is well on its way to major collapse of population and it's dominance over the natural world.

We passed the point of no return of carbon in the atmosphere 12 years ago and we're heading towards a world war. Humans are stupidly short-sighted and self defeating. Like when cancer kills it's host and then dies too. "

And unfortunately it's not something many seem aware of, often seeing the world as somehow made for us or that complex civilisation that depends on a functioning biosphere and semi stable climate norms that are suitable for agriculture *just* happened because it was predetermined or because we humans are so great.

Definitely need to try make our peace with it and even marvel at the absurdness of it all in thinking that maybe intelligent life is just too vulnerable to self destruction whenever it arises in this great big cosmos.

Trump will end the war by just giving Ukraine to Vladimir Putin. The only thing that Trump has the slightest loyalty to is Donald Trump. Trump has not the slightest interest in or knowledge of international politics, he has no concern whether there are millions of deaths elsewhere, he has no interest even in the American people other than to use them. Trump is the worst person to be running the USA at the worst time so far in human history.

Trump is on record saying he will end the war

Trump will end the war by just giving Ukraine to Vladimir Putin. The only thing that Trump has the slightest loyalty to is Donald Trump. Trump has not the slightest interest in or knowledge of international politics, he has no concern whether there are millions of deaths elsewhere, he has no interest even in the American people other than to use them. Trump is the worst person to be running the USA at the worst time so far in human history.

And if you think that I am scaremongering, then you are totally ignorant of global politics. Come back in 2 years and apologise to me."

tbh that’s not worth coming back for total scaremongering he won get over it

If he had won in some pissant little country I wouldn't care in the slightest. This is a man who doesn't give a shit about geopolitics, who sees human life as immaterial, who has the concentration of a 5 year old, who does not serve, he takes. Who on January 6th will again be given the control of the the biggest nuclear arsenal in the world, put in charge of the largest military force in the world. He's not a crazed dictator who wants to take over the world. But he doesn't give a stuff about anything that happens that isn't directly to his own benefit.

We will have to accept that the US will no longer act in any way to counterbalance the aggression of countries like Russia. Like it or not, the USA presence on the world stage is the only thing that saved England from Germany in WW2, the only thing that prevented the Soviet Union from swallowing most of Europe in the post war years, the only thing that has made China hold back from just swallowing most of Asia.

We now enter the most dangerous time in history. The first time around for Trump there were still some adults remaining in the American administration, military chiefs that prevented the worst from happening, judiciary that insisted on following the law. This time Trump has openly said that on day one he will just remove every person from public office that doesn't swear personal allegiance to Trump - not to America, not to the Constitution, not to the Law, but directly to himself. Any company that does not support the Republic party will be removed from any work for the government. The only way to get government contracts will be by donations to the Trump empire. Minorities will be persecuted while media companies cheer on Trump. Voices that disagree will be removed, as Trump just changes the law to his whim and the law enforcement agencies just go along with it because it's the law... (Couldn't happen? We've already seen the handpicked majority that he placed into the US Supreme Court Judiciary "interpreting" the law to remove rights from women, to force them to carry pregnancies through even if they were r@ped, even if they are under age, even if it will kill them. We've seen women being arrested just for having irregular periods because a 6 week gap means that they "must" have gotten pregnant and got themselves an abortion pill. Police and judges are enforcing these laws even though any decent person knows that these laws are utterly vile).

The USA has removed itself from being a global force for progress and freedom (yeah, I know that it wasn't actually that good at it anyway, and often "freedom" meant just "the world works better for the US like this"), leaving all the rest of us in a much reduced position in the face of really nasty bastards like Putin.

"Starmer is going to need a new foreign secretary.

No foreign governments should be dictating who are appointed ministers are.

Why not? Lammy has expressed pretty strong views in the past about who he thinks the US President should be, despite it being none of his concern.

In any case, has anyone in Trump’s embryonic administration expressed a view on this topic?

Yes he is. You’re right.

Is the guy who actually started and is fighting the war saying that?

Until Putin says I’m leaving Ukraine then I’ll reserve judgement.

But yes, he may end the initial war!!

He may hasten the defeat of Ukraine by withdrawing aid as I mentioned . That’s very true.

"I think it is a huge historical moment.

Countless obstacles like being a rapist, election interference, fraud, etc?"

Thoughts ?"

It’s a bad day for Europe and a particularly bad day for Ukraine.

From any kind of global perspective I don’t see any good coming from this other than perhaps the rest of the western world realising that their security should no longer depend on the voting public of the United States.

The U.K. is not going to do well out of this as I think Musk will will open the taps of misinformation directed at the U.K. to help propel populist nonsense in this country too.

How will it be old news?

Trump has said what he is going to do and the only way it will be old news is if he doesn’t do it and the world carries on as it has.

That is not going to happen and the wrecking ball will be swung with repercussions all across the planet.

Trump has said what he is going to do and the only way it will be old news is if he doesn’t do it and the world carries on as it has.

That is not going to happen and the wrecking ball will be swung with repercussions all across the planet."

I can’t see it, he talks a lot of bull shit, look and what he said pre 2016 that never happened, plus he is old and feeble now and only has 1 term. I was far more worried in 2016

Trump takes Michigan, will finish up winning all the swing states and topping 300 electoral college votes, and almost certainly the popular vote too.

Much bigger win than any pollster predicted, looks like the betting markets got it right again.

Also I got it wrong ! I predicted he'd win election but lost popular vote.

Very chastening experience for the Dems, one of their worst defeats for a while.

Truly pleased for Trump.

UK news channels bbc, itv and sky news all had it in for him and now fully back tracking.

Stock market green commodities are dipping World wide whilst Ed Miliband is hell bent on turning the UK green.

Good luck to anyone who is considering investing in UK Energy as you better have money to lose.

True. But you can only blame the people who voted labour in.

Britain was stuffed even before Trump's re election. He will deregulate, lower taxes and stop out sourcing. I read he was going to put 200% tariffs on Mexican and Chinese imports. Good. Payback time.

Go Trump.

Just a thought on that. If Musky is put into his Tzar role, then environmental policies are going to be pushed (maybe). Solar for one, and a stable lekki grid needed for lekki cars. 1 running them from increased oil and gas isn't going to look too good. 2 If the US flood the market it'll mean instant trade war with OPEC. China isn't buying so it'll be an anti Tesla move if it happens as people will buy Ford.

Wider, the massive AI advance and all that chat about bitcoin mining means more companies moving to nuclear power, SMR's are apparently quick to build, but either way, this is just my opinion on what has changed in 4yrs and the holes in potential policy.

If there's greater lekki from nuclear that means greater a phase out of oil and gas and greater headroom for other industries as it becomes cheaper and greener?

It depends on what you mean by EV’s being pushed.

Democrats are keen on an EV mandate just like the UK/EU but the idea of forcing people to drive particular cars is hugely unpopular in the US so Harris could never commit to it. EV’s simply don’t work in the vast American landscape and culture.

So an EV mandate isn’t going to happen in the US. It won’t happen in the UK/EU either but our governments are stupid enough to try it, and will only be forced to drop it when the consumer pressure gets too great and a few car manufacturers go bust.

But yes generally the US is always very forward looking in the availability of technology.

One of the core reasons the US economy continues to outperform the UK/EU is the cheap energy prices there. That’s not going to change, so don’t expect any change to their consumption of home grown oil and gas. Like the BRICs generally, they aren’t stupid enough.

In terms of environment and health generally it will be interesting to see what influence RFK Jr has he has some interesting ideas on health and the damage that big pharma and big food are doing to Americans’ health. Will be interesting to see if they follow through on any radical policies.
