I've stayed with a blue-collar family in one of the ex-industrial heartlands and with a family involved in creative arts in a metropolis. Both were very interested in our UK politics, but both struggled with the concept of multiple parties in the UK. They seemed to like the simplicity of a binary choice. In this field you align to these values, or in that field you align to the opposite. I tried to explain nuance but whilst the Democratic family (the creatives) almost kind of got it, the other family (Repubs) didn't like it at all. The polarisation could not have been more stark. I know all politics is about manipulation (otherwise how can you govern a country of millions ?), but the reductionism seemed complicit in fostering binary choices and thus binary views and therefore binary outcomes. | |||

If Trump wins his expected States then he'd reach the magic 270 votes by winning the 3 biggest swing states (most polls have him ahead in all 3). Alternatively he could lose one of those but win two of the others to reach 270. The maths for Harris are similar, with the 3 biggest swing States she wins easily but could also win with combinations of more than 3. Trump certainly does not need to win 5 of the Swing states to reach 270 and Harris will not win with 'any' 3 of them. All the above of course depends on both winning their 'expected' states which is by no means guaranteed ! | |||
