Charlie getting a warm welcome at Australia’s Parliament House

Lidia Thorpe, an independent senator from Victoria, approached the stage yelling “this is not your country”.

“You committed genocide against our people. Give us our land back. Give us what you stole from us – our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people,” shouted Thorpe, who is a fiercely outspoken advocate for Indigenous rights.

“You destroyed our land. Give us a treaty. We want a treaty in this country. You are a genocidalist.

Fuck the colony, fuck the colony”

"Surprised he found the time to destroy her country. "

He seems to have racked up all of those achievements before he was even born. Perhaps I have underestimated him.

The typical playbook argument, to divert the discussion away from the original topic.

Maybe employers need to adapt this, when talking to union reps about workers rights and pay.

" Hey mate, have you ever worked down a mine or any of your children been up cleaning chimneys..?"

She appears to be straight out of the group that believes "The meek shall inherit the Earth; so long as the others don't mind".

For the whole of human history the most powerful peoples have overun and subdued weaker indigenous populations. That is the way it is.

At the time the Europeans colonised Australia the indigenous people, despite having been on earth the same period of time as the Europeans, had no weapons or organisational structure to resist; so they were overun.

Now, centuries later, with the benefit of European style education, European style government, and European type of infrastructure and commercial success, this woman starts waving the aboriginal flag and trying to embarrass a man who had absolutely nothing to do with it. Political point scoring, nothing more or less.

I suppose it could be argued all that European style education, European style government and European type infrastructure and commercial success were for the benefit of the European settlers and the original inhabitants are largely living in poverty.

The original inhabitants have had the benefit of the European development in recent decades; if they chose to take it.

However, some have chosen to live in their traditional way in the outback. Some sought a future in the cities where they were not very successful, and some even stood for the Australian parliament so they can scream insults at the King without fear of retribution.

Had the British not taken Australia it would be part of China or Japan today. The aboriginals would not have developed fast enough to resist and would probably no longer exist if they had been made Asian subjects.

Sometimes fighting against people who are committing terror on you gets called acts of terror.

After all Nelson Mandela was at one time called a terrorist. American rebels fighting for Independence from Britain were labeled also. Irgun Zvai Leumi (National Military Organisation) led by future Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin were labeled terrorists. If you resist a powerful adversary, you will automatically get labeled terrorists, because the adversary controls the narrative. The only way to win is to win your struggle.

Most part of the human history is just a story of strong eats the weak. The aboriginal tribes themselves would have been fighting each other. There were brutal conquests all over the world throughout history.

The Western countries made faster scientific progress compared to the rest of the world which made them better at it. The period of imperialism and colonisation were just an outcome of that progress.

The moral framework that conquering and subjugating a weaker country is bad was an idea that started spreading only around the twentieth century. Before that if an Asian country had made the scientific progress before the Europeans, the Asians would have been colonisers.

I don't agree that the West did lot of "good" for the colonies. At the same time, it's sheer lunacy to attack someone living today for what was done when he wasn't even alive or had any control over.

You don't have to travel halfway around the globe to witness the results of centuries of imperialism.

It seems royalists still haven't learned the lessons of 800 years of history.

Shameful to see a democratically elected senator thrown out of her own parliament chamber to save the blushes of a freeloader like Charley.

Islamic scholers were way ahead of Europeans in the middle ages, the great library, medicine, physics, astrology etc but got destroyed by the mongol empire... which probably set back development by a few hundred years.

That's true. It was the industrial revolution which eventually made a big difference. Maybe in an alternate history where they didn't get the setback, the Islamic countries would have achieved the industrial revolution first and the rest of the history would have been reversed.

But seemingly it's only the British empire that was bad all other invaders and forces colonising other countries were all lovely particularly the Spanish, Portuguese and the Dutch they really cared

It's only this country that has ever done anything bad.

"Most part of the human history is just a story of strong eats the weak.

Islamic scholers were way ahead of Europeans in the middle ages, the great library, medicine, physics, astrology etc but got destroyed by the mongol empire... which probably set back development by a few hundred years.

That's true. It was the industrial revolution which eventually made a big difference. Maybe in an alternate history where they didn't get the setback, the Islamic countries would have achieved the industrial revolution first and the rest of the history would have been reversed."

Think the advantages we had with the industrial revolution is natural resources, coal, ironically water power, and education system untouched from the mongol invasion. Could argue we couldn't of actually achieved it without other northern European countries as well, plus all the wars too

Do you know why no one asks for reparations for Arab sl*very? The male sl*ves were castrated or at the very least not allowed to have kids. They basically have no descendants to pay any reparations to.

This is what makes the "West bad" narrative look so funny. Most of them don't know how brutal the rest of the world was around the same time.

"You don't have to travel halfway around the globe to witness the results of centuries of imperialism.

It seems royalists still haven't learned the lessons of 800 years of history.

Shameful to see a democratically elected senator thrown out of her own parliament chamber to save the blushes of a freeloader like Charley.

You'd prefer a Putin or Xi or Jong-Un as constitutional head? What about Trump even? God help us if that is the alternative to our constitutional monarchy."

Think you and I know the monarchy hasn't got any say what happens in this country, when was the last time they disagreed to give consent to a law by parliament?

It's what Charles represents, the Crown, she has a beef with.

He's trying to re-invent the situation.

Only to do that some reparations might help.

British culture has improved the quality of life there, but at what expense?

Which is better sitting in an apartment getting d*unk, watching satellite tv in Sydney or being chased by a dingo in the outback and digging up gold nuggets.

Moreover because the Arab countries will tell them to "F#%$ Off' whereas the UK will set up a review under a retired judge and spend countless millions gathering evidence and flying 'victims' around the globe to a sob story. Then recommend a multi £ bil. reparations package. Never mind we've been sending aid ever since independence.

The Romans is a silly example. As would anything from Ancient or Medieval history. The line after which comparisons can be made is when there is a clear continuity in the government or ruling class (such as a royal family). If you can easily trace back through time to the point being made then a comparison can be argued.

I’ve never researched this but does anyone know what levels of reparations etc the Portuguese, Spanish, French and Dutch have made with their former colonies and the indigenous peoples? Also what reparations have Arab and African countries (or tribes) made to the descendants of sl ve colonies?

It's nonsense to try and look back at history and decide what injustices are worthy of compensation. Who gets to decide? History is crammed with injustices, at home and overseas. In any case, in the Caribbean, former plantation land has already been distributed to citizens as reparation. Where does it end?

I'm not sure on the reparations question, I think whilst there's some in the aboriginal community who probably think there should be there'll be others who just want a treaty which then yes might lead to their claims to lands being returned etc..

It's massively complex given some tribes/ clans were semi nomadic and territory was an area of conflict between them..

I doubt it will ever happen and with some even if it did and there was further recognition of past wrongs that wouldn't be sufficient..

It's more nuanced than that. Remember that judges, magistrates, police, armed forces all swear allegiance to the crown not politicians. So it would make it much harder for a rogue 'Trump' character to seize power undemocratically. The constitutional balance keeps us safe.
