New home planning approvals in England fall to lowest level in a decade

Planning approvals for new houses in England have dropped to a 10-year low, according to new figures that underline how difficult it will be for Labour to hit its target of building 300,000 homes a year.

A nod to Angela Rayner, that experts say much more will be needed to hit the government’s target of 1.5m new homes over the parliament – a pledge that the prime minister has put at the centre of his plan to boost growth.

Of the 1.5 million total new home pledge, Rayner has said 300,000 new social rent homes will be built. 1.2 million currently on local authorities council house waiting lists. The renter reform bill, before it’s passed will likely result in increased numbers of private rented sector evictions as landlords bail out, adding more to the waiting lists

The 300,000 promised, at a cost of £200,000 each, will cost £60bn, which would be a worthwhile long term investment.

The number of owner occupied homes has fallen from 71% of gross dwelling stock (2001) to currently 62%. There are now three million more rented households than 23 years ago.

Substantial investment is needed, doubling council tax on holiday let’s and punitive taxes on private landlords will not increase delivery of social housing.

Clearly the figures don't factor in the availability of materials. Plus the looming shortage of copper for copper pipes and slates for roofs, insulation and the ability to build the infrastructure like sewage, water, gas and electric because the solar system is too expensive to add as standard.

Then the proposed brownfield sites are on top of existing rural villages which will impact their lives.

Exterminating Emmerdale isn't an option.

Perhaps another term, after 14 years, for the failing Conservatives? (Remember Boris and Liz Truss), Reform? Liberals? Monster Raving Loony party?
