"Freeze the pensioners to Death - (Labours own research and Report 2017) Most prisoners released have no home to go to - so will most likely re-offend and go back to prison. The prisoners are saying this themselves when interviewed today. Give above inflation rises to the Unions. What the Actual FFFFFFFFFFFFFF! "What is so funny is the rage and indignation of the ill-informed. Early release of prisoners was a Tory policy brought in by Sunak's Government. Theresa May's 2017 _anifesto proposed means testing the Winter Fuel Allowance. Why should hard working families, who are struggling with high taxes, low wages be subsidising millionaire pensioners to the tune of £200/£300 a year? WFA has NOT been taken away from any pensioner on Pension Credit. The challenge is to make sure all those who can claim do so. Its almost like all these policies are actually put forward by unelected government institutions. Of course the elected PM is just nudged towards choosing from the predetermined selection of polices." Yes Civil Servants advise, Ministers decide. It's been like that for decades. New government thinks we need to get our finances under control. Asks civil servants for recommendations. i Newspaper reports that means testing WFA haa been on the agenda since 2010 but no Tory government would touch it because they rely on the pensioner vote. Theresa May in 2017 is the exception but she lost her majority.

"How do people propose people currently being convicted and sentenced to prison are dealt with? Where will they be put? Or should we stop all court cases and allow those not yet convicted to remain free until more prisons are built or operate a one in one out system? I'll also be interested in people's reaction to the pension increase that's coming in 2025 of £465 a year if you receive the full pension. " Is the figure of £465 not linked to inflation? How does that increase compare with the rise in food prices or energy costs or rent?

How does that increase compare with the rise in food prices or energy costs or rent?" Yes it is linked to inflation. I'm remembering the outcry earlier this year when pensions increased by over 6%. It was unfair when younger people were struggling etc and pensioners were portrayed as having had a good life with cheap housing and huge private pensions. Now suddenly we're all starving and dying of the cold.

Their own estimations was that 4000 elderly people would die as a result of this allowance being removed….. "How are they determining which criminals to release early? Is it time left to serve or severity of the crime? So if a person is in prison for physical assault or sexual assault but only has a year left to serve vs a person who evaded tax but has three years left to serve, I would release the latter not the former." There are some details in this article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c23ljkrx0e2o The government says they aren't releasing violent offenders with more than 4 years sentence, sex offenders and domestic abusers. Apparently sex offenders and domestic abusers were released in case they were serving multiple crimes for different sentences and they have already finished serving sentence for the violent crime.

"^^ I think there's a case for stopping WFA for people above a certain tax bracket. " That is a very good point. Richer pensioners in receipt of investment income and private pensions, on top of state pension, will be paying tax. If their income takes them into 40% or 45% bracket then no way they need WFA. However, appears they are applying that to more people if they lose it by going just a £ over into not being eligible for various benefits such as pension credit. Maybe 20% tax payers lose a proportion of WFA?

That's easy for us to say because we're resourceful and we know we'll manage. I do feel sorry for people who just slip through the net, the ones who are too proud to apply for a benefit despite being entitled and the ones who think it's too complicated. There are also those who save the money, give it to their children or donate it to charity and make a virtue out of sitting indoors with a hat and coat on and a blanket on the knees

"Even Labour's own pay masters (The Unions) are against their policy of cutting the Winter Fuel Allowance so what does that say " Labour Party's donations from unions is now a minority of their total donations. So the Union paymaster tag is now a soundbite used Tory supporters. According this article in the FT https://www.ft.com/content/1174616b-f17d-41aa-ab55-07e9c4613392 Unite, the union, has given more than half a million pounds to 88 mostly left-leaning, Labour MPs after deliberately cutting funding to the party headquarters following Sir Keir Starmer’s shift to the centre ground. It's interesting you think parties should follow the interesting of their party donors. I presume you must be pretty wealthy considering your strong tory leanings.. Before you accuse me of being a Labour leftie, I've not voted Labour since 1998 and have conservative once in more recent times.

I'm sure I read somewhere that stopping the WFA from 40% tax paying pensioners was suggested to the government as a simple way to target the wealthy pensioners instead of millions already barely getting by. It may have been David Cameron but not sure. If they did that then they could say they are targeting the richer people only, something I thought they once stood for. I guess it would raise less but at least thousands wouldn't die unnecessarily and millions more sent into poverty.

"We should make prisoners build more prisons" Lol yeah. Let's ship hundreds of prisoners, most of whom will need ground-up training in construction labour, out to gated, secure, specially insured sites miles from their existing prisons where they'll need guarding and supervising every second of the day (by prison staff and civilian contractors who will need additional pay for special circumstances), not to mention fully equipping, and expect these inexperienced, unmotivated prisoners - for no wages, I presume? - to erect state-of-the-art prison buildings. What do you suppose that will cost, over and above the cost of a normal building contractor? What do you suppose the construction industry would have to say about it? I love these knee-jerk, throw-away-the-key type Daily Mailisms. They never, ever stand up to even the most rudimentary scrutiny. It's so ironic that the same people who refuse to invest in rehabilitation programs are always trying to figure out how to mitigate the tremendous cost of punitive incarceration.

I didn't expect such long lecture in response to what was a sarcastic tongue in the cheek remark. Personally I am all supportive for focusing on rehabilitation for non-violent criminals. "He was jailed for 16 months. Despicable person he is." 115 quid when dead. WFA when alive. Bet most pensioners would rather have their wallet lifted when they pop their clogs than annually taken back (FAB won't allow the word ro**ed) by a party they mistakingly thought represented hard working, frugal savers. I'm not retired and we are both lucky enough to have very well paid jobs, so would be happy to not receive any WFA. Voted Labour all my life but I'm livid what they are doing to pensioners, never vote for them again. I feel dreadfully sorry for those hard working, saving pensioners, 45 plus years of hard work, few quid put into a pension pot and now being slapped around the chops because they didn't piss their pay up the wall and committed the heinous crime of saving all their lives for a few treats in retirement. I wonder where all the pensioner and upcoming pensioner votes will go next election. All those cowardly MPs who abstained, they couldn't even stand up and be counted. Shame on the weak willed bastards.

" Is there a source for any of that? As someone else has pointed out, the situation with prisons is down to years of underfunding by the Tories. They pledged to build more prisons, but actually closed some. If the problem now, because of that, is overcrowding in prisons, what exactly would you suggest? Given they most people in prison don’t actually pose a threat to society, arguably it makes sense to release them early in order to create more prison capacity for more dangerous people who do pose a threat. And at least Labour have made someone a minister to look at the problem, who actually knows about the issue https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/jul/08/a-shoe-fixing-key-cutting-radical-why-labours-new-prisons-minister-is-perfect-for-the-job But yeah, let’s just scream about ‘Labour releasing all the prisoners’ without taking any context whatsoever into account

"I think alot of pensioners will leave what little money they have when they pass away to a snail farm in Asia to teach the goverment a lesson. Scrapping the winter fuel payment isn't helping working people the opposite because that payment goes back into the economy one way or another, even the working people in the fuel companies spend some of it into the economy when it reaches them, they may buy a car, buy food, pay a bill, go on holiday in Cornwall. Simple economics, flow of money. Looks like someone's head is disappearing up his ass, eh Mr Starmer. The goverment seem to be forgetting they'll be old one day and may need some financial assistance especially after they've buggered up their private pensions. I can see the headlines, Kier Karma claiming winter fuel payments. " Interesting economic theory, does the same apply to doctors, teachers, train drivers etc who get pay rises. Or do they just not spend theirs.

"It really is sad watching people swallow the BS that the right wing Tories media press shovel. Let me deal with all of the above main points in turn. The winter fuel allowance is being means tested, in 2020, 25% of pensioners were millionaires, compared to 14% of pensioners living in poverty. Where is the outrage for the younger people who have to choose between heating and eating. Numerous Tories have openly discussed means testing the winter fuel payment, but it was kept as a bribe because they didn't want to alienate their voter base. The manufactured outrage from the conservatives and Torie press is laughable, considering Boris Johnson let 100,000s (let the bodies pile high) of pensioners die during COVID. Sad though it is, pensioners do freeze during the winter, but mainly due to lack of understanding on how much the heating costs because of the fear tactics newspapers print in thier attempt to get clicks. The issue of Stammers free gifts is another manufactured outrage, first of all the gifts in question come from a wealth labour politician who is already in the house of lords. Secondly the value of the gifts are a drop in the ocean compared to the £800,000 gift / loan Boris Johnson received for some wallpaper and then tried to lie about / cover up and all the other gifts / bribes they didn't declare. The gifts Stammer has received is all on public record over a 4 year period. Next the prisoner release. Yes it sucks, but is largely a Tory policy a result it 14 years of complete failure and mismanagement. Prisons and prison guards can't be magically built overnight. And are people seriously suggesting that you should be able to spout hate and bile online and get away with it, that you should be able to riot and try and burn down people's homes with people in it and that should go unpunished. As soon as people started going to prison the riots stopped. A bunch of sad morons who are too thick to realise they are being used by people like Farage and Tommy Robinson. It's all an attempt from a media who is facing media reform to kick up enough dirt and hope that some of it sticks. Are labour perfect - No. But people need to wake up and see just how absolutely catastrophic the last 14 years of conservative rule has been.. Your post is laughable and devolved from reality. The Conservatives won three elections in a row. It looks like the electorate were more than happy with the performance of the Conservstive government. Your comment about Boris Johnson allowed 100,000 allowance to die is offensive and distasteful apart from the fact that it is blatantly untrue . He put in place extensive support packages to save people from financial ruin and ppe was obtained in order to save lives regardless of cost. Government ministers were working non stop during Coovid in order to manage the crisis. We should all be exceptionally greatfull for their efforts " Do you mean the election where they had to form a hung parliament with the lib dems, or the election where they had an their majority slashed by what was then an unelectable Labour party. Or the one where Boris won by promising to "get Brexit done" and then basically bent over for the EU ? I'm glad you brought up PPE, billions of pounds worth of fraud and contracts handed out to the rich mates of the Tories. And yes we should thank them, while people are dying and people are not allowed to go the funerals they are throwing parties in number 10. Thank you for that

But people need to wake up and see just how absolutely catastrophic the last 14 years of conservative rule has been.hahaha you think it's just the last 14 years the country has been going down the toilet? It's been a shit show since the very early 2000s,labour or tory take ya pick of what shit sandwich you wana eat In fairness, the last 14 years of Tory rule hit plenty of new lows."

The GDP under the last labour government went down because of the recession. This is why "longest continuous period of growth" isn't really a great metric to compare two governments.

"The Tories have been releasing prisoners early for quite a while now. The prison staff and probation staff have been threatened with the sack if they talked to the press about it and their concerns. This isn't a labour created issue as has been mentioned but there has been little or no investment in increasing capacity of prison cells or increasing capacity of the probation service that it is overwhelmed. You cannot build prisons quickly. Its not like building a block of flats in a town centre where an office block was. You need it to meet certain criteria. That takes time and money. There is a backlog of people being held on remand due to face trial as there isn't the prison space to house them once convicted and then Tommy Ten Names goes an invites racist violence whilst sunning himself abroad. This stuff doesn't happen overnight and the last 14 years of Tory rule hasn't helped it due to underinvestment in critical national infrastructure such as NHS, Prisons, Probation, Policing, Education etc. The winter fuel payments is going to be means tested. Sure, there will be some people who are just going to miss out due to their income but where and how do you draw a line? You could have a sliding scale and if they are over the line just, they get a reduced amount etc. But there are no easy fixes to the last 14 years. It will take longer than 1 term for things to get fixed but I fear that people will expect things to be fixed in 6 months and when that doesn't happen, turn and vote for Tories at the next election. " What a lovely reply. No angst, no nastiness, no screaming political bias. You come over very unusual, a rare breed, a dinosaur. In other words, a level headed mature man. Well done. Liz.x

" that is a lot of excuses for labour releasing 1700 prisoners en masse. It might not have been as bad as it turned out to be if they had not released prisoners who committed certain crimes such as domestic violence, which they said adamantly they would not do. Not having the probation services and tags ready was also a massive own goal too. I'm sure that if Johnson hadn't had no10 redecorated this would never have happened

I can tell you where you don't draw the line. 12 fucking grand, that's where. " Yeah where the line is drawn isn't right, that needs to be fixed. My in laws for example have complained about losing the wfp. And yet every 3 years they gift £10k to each of the three kids so as they don't go over a certain amount to save on tax. When we explained that saving some of the money from pensioners that clearly do not need it and let the government invest it in much needed services such as providing more spaces at special schools for kids with learning difficulties, like their own grandson, who can't get a place, they just didn't get it. But what level of income do you draw the line at as there has to be a cut off or people like Rod Stewart will still be drawing their wfp. I think they could have decreased it over time from everyone down to people under X amount, then in 2 years drop it further until you get a happy medium where only those that will actually use it and need it get it.
