Whatever next ?

Can we blame the greenies ?

"Over the past three months, the shift from hot to cool temperatures in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean has happened at record speed. This emerging “Atlantic Niña” pattern comes just ahead of an expected transition to a cooler La Niña in the Pacific Ocean, and these back-to-back events could have ripple effects on weather worldwide." "Climate change."

Yeah get with the message ffs.

This is global cooling not global warming! It stopped warming sometime around 2008 and turned into climate change. Warming and cooling don't work anymore so they had to think up a buzz phrase to brainwash everyone.

Seasonal change is now climate change and global warming (which only happens when it suits) is now climate change. Global cooling (which is troublesome for the bought and paid for "experts") is also called climate change!

It's pretty simple. Anything they say it is will be put down to climate change.

Turn off your gas boiler, walk everywhere, eat insects and outsource your thinking....it'll all be over soon. The next ice age is coming and if you think it's hot now....you ain't felt heat like there's gonna be.

Simple Science (in a complicated kind of way)

As El Niño begins its end cycle, the climate will in turn begin to cool. As El Niño has added to the already very high temperatures that the climate has been experiencing, a drop in temperature that El Niño brought doesn't mean global cooling with regard to overall climate temperature rises.

Who knows?

Ask Scripps or NASA or NOAA, not a tabloid or broadsheet.

Weather

The short-term changes in the atmosphere that happen each day, such as rain, snow, clouds, winds, and thunderstorms. Weather can change in minutes, hours, days, or weeks. Factors that affect weather include air pressure, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and more.

Climate

The long-term average conditions of the weather in a specific area, usually measured over a period of at least 30 years. Climate is defined by average temperature and precipitation, as well as the type, frequency, duration, and intensity of weather events. Climate can also include seasonal and longer periods, out to centuries and millennia. For example, climate change includes sea-level rise, melting ice sheets and glaciers, and shifting seasons.

What caused them to change the name? It was always global warming (after they tested to see if it was global cooling during the early 1970's).

After the science was settled, the Maldives disappeared under water in 2001 (Michael Mann), the north pole went completely ice free in 2013 (Al Gore), lower Manhattan became submerged in 2014 (James Hansen) and glacier national park in Montana lost every inch of glacier in 2019 (IPCC)....

I think that the climate should be cancelled and subsequently imprisoned for dishing out mis/disinformation on a world wide scale.

With regard to the OP:

El Niño is an integral part of our climate system. It is one phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, a recurring climate pattern involving temperature changes in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. El Niño events can significantly impact global weather patterns, ocean conditions, and the environment.

It is part of the natural variability of the climate system. While it operates on a shorter timescale (typically every 2 to 7 years), its influence is felt globally, making it an essential component of the climate system. Scientists study ENSO patterns to better predict and understand its effects on both short-term weather and long-term climate trends.

As El Niño comes out of its cycle, climate will cool accordingly.

As I said above, this does not mean that global warming is getting less.

I only continue to ask because your appeal to authority is astounding.

Typical example would be that when you ask an evangelical Christian for proof that God exists....they always answer " it says so in the bible"

How does taking high rates of tax from everyday working people make the thermostat notch down, make the weather less bad, make the weather less extreme, stop the sun from being hot and help ice freeze?

"

Because government/s 'believe' you will use less fossil fuel. Also, that the tax can be used to 'offset' carbon. With negative carbon projects such as wind and solar.

"Climate change.

No, "climate change" was a more accurate term than "global warming".

The name was changed to accurately describe what was happening.

The climate changes all the time. Has done since the dawn of time.

Plus it stopped people saying "but it's cold and rainy today, global warming isn't real".

So the sentiment remains the same, yeah? They just changed the wording to stop people from dissenting?

IE, to distinguish between weather and climate.

So bad weather is caused by climate change/global warming or does bad weather cause climate change/global warming?

Climate change can cause "bad" weather.

"Can"? So....not 100% of the time?

Correct.

And would that be bad hot weather, bad cold weather, bad windy weather, bad mild weather, bad 4 seasons in one day weather?

More, extreme weather conditions.

What causes good weather?

I only ask you because you seem to have a real grasp of the science, politics, reason, facts, truth and whatever messages are presented to us by the BBC.

I've never taken any information on climate science from the BBC

Oh...and you have a real downer on oil companies.

If you're interested in more info. The Met Office have an article "How is climate linked to extreme weather". Interesting read.

If you're interested generally in misinformation being spread about climate change. Have a look for a website called Climate Feedback it's a dot org. Climate scientists critique news articles, claims in the media etc.

What about the claims I mentioned a few posts above about low lying islands, land masses, glaciers and the north pole? Were the climate experts pulled up and cancelled for giving mis/disinformation after these events didn't happen?

"

You're conflating people who made predictions. With climate science. I'd have to look into each one and see what the science said, rather than what was reported.

"

"

It doesn't. Just to make the point. In 2022 the fossil fuels industry received $7 trillion in subsidiaries. Largely from tax.

"

I only continue to ask because your appeal to authority is astounding.

Typical example would be that when you ask an evangelical Christian for proof that God exists....they always answer " it says so in the bible"

"

I don't have any authority. I'm just relaying you information.

Those energy sources are not going to be a total solution, to stop the global heating problems that we face. They do help to reduce the impact that we would make if, for example, we continued to use more fossil fuels instead for our electricity generation.

The substantial heating that humans have caused, since the start of the industrial revolution is underway still and we haven't made sufficient changes in order to stop the process, nevermind to undo the impact that we've already made.

Take into consideration that at the top of the tree is China (2.2tn)...

Followed by the USA, Russia, India, Japan, certain EU nations, Canada...among others. UK and Ireland is pretty small beer compared to the others. Tax breaks, incentives and subsidies are necessary to keep exploration and supply going. Fossil fuels work when it comes to sustainable quality of life. Renewable sources are really not at all effective but they still get their fair slice of subsidies.

You mention fair share of subsidies for greener solutions but they are probably unfavourably small, when you compare them with the harmful fossil fuels, that are so damaging.

We could and should do much more, to be moving away from fossil fuels.

You're conflating people who made predictions. With climate science. I'd have to look into each one and see what the science said, rather than what was reported.

How does taking high rates of tax from everyday working people make the thermostat notch down, make the weather less bad, make the weather less extreme, stop the sun from being hot and help ice freeze?

It doesn't. Just to make the point. In 2022 the fossil fuels industry received $7 trillion in subsidiaries. Largely from tax.

I only continue to ask because your appeal to authority is astounding.

Typical example would be that when you ask an evangelical Christian for proof that God exists....they always answer " it says so in the bible"

I don't have any authority. I'm just relaying you information.

Your comparison to religion is flawed. Religion requires belief, science can be understood.

What these subsidies are they payments and why do they qualify for them?

there's an article on a site called FDI Intelligence. "Countries with the highest fossil fuel subsidies". Gives you some information.

As to why they qualify for them. Maybe follow the money and see what industry contributes high value political donations.

I look forward to CoP twenty something having their annual hypocrisy festival in Beijing.

You mention fair share of subsidies for greener solutions but they are probably unfavourably small, when you compare them with the harmful fossil fuels, that are so damaging.

"Simple Science (in a complicated kind of way)

As El Niño begins its end cycle, the climate will in turn begin to cool. As El Niño has added to the already very high temperatures that the climate has been experiencing, a drop in temperature that El Niño brought doesn't mean global cooling with regard to overall climate temperature rises.

Who knows?

Ask Scripps or NASA or NOAA, not a tabloid or broadsheet.

(typo)

*Weather will begin to cool. Not "climate".

"

I guess well get the answer in 30 years .... Maybe

It's climate change because none of the actual season are falling on the correct month and winter falling at the incorrect period creating global warming also at the incorrect period basically it's all fucked and not looking good

"Climate change.

No, "climate change" was a more accurate term than "global warming".

I've been trying to find the links to articles but Google no longer lists them.

I should have stipulated that when I said renewable I was referring to wind and solar. Yes we have the potential to supply almost 30% of energy to the UK with wind and solar but that can only be realised IF every single wind turbine is turning at full tilt for 24hrs and IF every solar panel is absorbing huge amounts of sunlight for 24 hrs. This is obviously impossible because the wind speeds vary greatly, direct sunlight is (in UK at least) quite rare over 24hrs and 365 days. You need high winds and sunny days for the wind/solar grid to work to it's full potential. For example....how much could be produced on Dec 21st compared to June 21st?

So the average measurements across the year (I think the study was carried out in 2021 but it's no longer listed) came in at approximately 3-6.5% of electricity generation.

No, absolutely not denying science! Science definitely exists, always changing, always evolving, sometimes right sometimes wrong. Science is what binds us to our surroundings, to each other, to the heavens and the earth. It requires huge study, analysis, conversation (from all quarters) and open mindedness. It requires debate, it requires non partizanship and it is never settled. It's fundamental basis is questioning and discussion. It does not need demonising, censoring, ridiculing of fresh ideas & tried and tested method. Science can be beautiful, ugly, amazing, dull but is sometimes unpredictable. It should be open to opinion, dissent, disbelief and fact. Science is arguably the most important thing we can argue over.

Do I think we should do bugger all and rely on oil? Certainly not but at the same time we shouldn't bankrupt ourselves whilst pursuing effective alternatives. Especially when we see developing nations exploit their natural reserves and grow whilst we contract.

Is green energy clean energy? The hell it is! When it comes to manufacture and ends at disposal it's the most toxic, polluting and damaging to the planet we all share. Digging enormous ditches and trenches in which to bury the toxic sludge that gets left behind kills the soil, habitat, food sources and everything else we rely on mother nature to provide.

I could go on but...minds that can't be changed won't be changed.

Thank you for attending my Ted talk...

So the average measurements across the year (I think the study was carried out in 2021 but it's no longer listed) came in at approximately 3-6.5% of electricity generation. "

This wasn't right at all, the article you remember was inaccurate.

You can Google "national grid live" and it shows you a breakdown of where the electricity in the national grid comes from, right now, average for the day. Average for the week, month, year.

As I said the average for the year is 38%. Which is solar, wind, and a tiny bit from hydroelectric.

"Climate change.

No, "climate change" was a more accurate term than "global warming".

I look forward to CoP twenty something having their annual hypocrisy festival in Beijing.

I'm not sure what point you're making, are you questioning the validity of climate science, or just saying it is happening, but the UK should do fuck all about it and stay tied to ever increasingly expensive, externally priced fossil fuels?

No, absolutely not denying science! Science definitely exists, always changing, always evolving, sometimes right sometimes wrong. Science is what binds us to our surroundings, to each other, to the heavens and the earth. It requires huge study, analysis, conversation (from all quarters) and open mindedness.

Few points.

1. Climate science is well established, well understood. The only sensible argument about science, is more science.

2. We don't need to bankrupt ourselves. As pointed out, globally, the fossil fuels industry received $7 trillion in subsidiaries in 2022 (latest figures available). So it costs us a lot more to hang on to oil, coal and gas.

3. Long term it will be more economical to move to renewables.

4. Of course manufacturing solar panels and wind turbines creates waste and pollution. But it's relative, and it's much less than burning fossil fuels.

5. The more CO2 and other greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere, the greater the impact on the climate. Potentially costing a lot more cash to mitigate against the impacts.

When it becomes apparent that global warming/climate change is really a thing, and our leaders continue to go with the fossil fuel companies.

Those who speak up against it, will risk jail time.

As that is what is accepted now.

You mention fair share of subsidies for greener solutions but they are probably unfavourably small, when you compare them with the harmful fossil fuels, that are so damaging.

We could and should do much more, to be moving away from fossil fuels.

60bn renewable & 80bn fossils since 2015 according to the guardian.

Considering that renewable energy sources make up less than 3% of UK energy supply... I think useless renewable sources are doing rather well out of it. Also consider that the manufacture, supply, maintenance and replacement (after life span of apparatus 5/10 years) relies entirely on fossil fuels.

To "just stop oil" would end civilisation overnight.

"Considering that renewable energy sources make up less than 3% of UK energy supply"

Where do you get this misinformation from?

This year renewables have provided 38% of the electricity in the national grid.

"

There is much misrepresentation in that. Maybe the grid is made up with 38% of renewable sources but over the course of the year it doesn't supply 38% of the energy. There are several days in the year where precisely 0% of our energy is supplied from wind and solar.

Whenever there's thick fog, heavy snowfall and on calm nights there isn't the scope for this equipment to operate. Yes there maybe 38% of the infrastructure but it doesn't work 100% of the time....in fact, there needs to be fossil fuel usage for the apparatus to function. Heating up frozen turbines, oiling the mechanical parts of turbines, melting snow and ice off solar panels etc

I can't quite remember where the articles were written...might have been bloomberg news but I could be wrong.

Thank you for attending my Ted talk...

Few points.

5. The more CO2 and other greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere, the greater the impact on the climate. Potentially costing a lot more cash to mitigate against the impacts."

1. Science is not well understood. As I said above...it's always changing, always evolving and often unpredictable. Yes we need more science but we need to look at and listen to all aspects and angles. The demonising of opinions, questions and disagreements is not science.

2. As far as I'm aware the UK government gives little or no subsidy to fossil fuel companies. You're obviously quite passionate about this aspect so perhaps you should write strongly worded emails to the Chinese, Indian, Russian, Japanese etc governments and tell them to stop and for their climate experts to listen to our climate experts because our experts know better than their experts....maybe.

3. No...long term renewable apparatus needs renewed and replaced every 5/10 years after they've gone beyond their usable lifespan. They aren't cheap to replace and require massive fossil fuel energy to do so.

Therefore defeating your own argument at source.

4. The leftovers from mining, manufacturing and disposal of the infrastructure is far more toxic, pollutant and downright dangerous to the planet and it's inhabitants than fossil fuel burn off. Can fossil emissions be cleaner? Absolutely but they are cleaner now than they have ever been. The beauty about fossil fuel burning is that once it's burnt it's gone. Ash from coal and wood burning provides excellent nutrition and fertilisation for the soil and brings me nicely onto point....

5. C02 is one of the gasses of life. Not some sort of dangerous pollutant in the atmosphere as people like you believe it to be. With the (approx) 430 parts per million C02 (0.04 of 1% of which humans produce 0.4%) in the atmosphere it means that life can flourish. It provides food for every living thing on earth. It grows the vegetables we eat, the fruit we grow, the materials we use to create wonderful things like guitars! Pianos! Tree houses for the kids to fall out of! Panels for the dashboards of expensive range rovers! ...among one or two other things. It provides grass for our livestock to eat, homes for squirrels, birds, honey badgers, pythons, insects and cover for the army to practice their camouflage skills.

C02 emissions follow from heat not the other way round. Most C02 comes from the oceans and the sun heats the oceans. If you can limit solar activity then good luck to you!

Now before you ask....I don't work for shell, BP, exon mobil etc. I work on both sides of the Irish border for an environmental and forestry commission. I have a grasp of environmental issues but my knowledge is always expanding and adapting. I read and listen to people I agree with, disagree with, people that are smarter and people who are dumber. I welcome debate from all angles and all persuasions. I do not have a political affiliation and I vote for none of the above. I base my understanding on information received, questions that need answered, historical record and lived experience. I do not have blinkers on nor do I have a closed mind.

Maybe some people should take a leaf from the same book....the paper is recycled btw...

"Climate change.

No, "climate change" was a more accurate term than "global warming".

Few points.

1. Science is not well understood. As I said above...it's always changing, always evolving and often unpredictable. Yes we need more science but we need to look at and listen to all aspects and angles. The demonising of opinions, questions and disagreements is not science.

"

Where do you get this from? Climate science is very well established and understood. Small incremental tweaks happen all the time. But the science here is very solid.

"

"

This is just silly.

"

3. No...long term renewable apparatus needs renewed and replaced every 5/10 years after they've gone beyond their usable lifespan. They aren't cheap to replace and require massive fossil fuel energy to do so.

Therefore defeating your own argument at source.

"

Some info for you.

Average life span of a solar panel: 25-30 years.

Average life span of wind turbines: 20 years.

"

4. The leftovers from mining, manufacturing and disposal of the infrastructure is far more toxic, pollutant and downright dangerous to the planet and it's inhabitants than fossil fuel burn off.

"

This is an entirely different argument, and not related to climate change.

"

Can fossil emissions be cleaner? Absolutely but they are cleaner now than they have ever been. The beauty about fossil fuel burning is that once it's burnt it's gone.

"

No, it's not "gone", this is the problem, the CO2 is in the atmosphere. This is precisely the issue.

"

"

So you just haven't taken the time to understand why CO2 and other greenhouse gases are causing climate change? I'd recommend taking a few minutes to read about it. It will help a lot when debating these issues.

"

Now before you ask....I don't work for shell, BP, exon mobil etc. I work on both sides of the Irish border for an environmental and forestry commission. I have a grasp of environmental issues but my knowledge is always expanding and adapting. I read and listen to people I agree with, disagree with, people that are smarter and people who are dumber. I welcome debate from all angles and all persuasions. I do not have a political affiliation and I vote for none of the above. I base my understanding on information received, questions that need answered, historical record and lived experience. I do not have blinkers on nor do I have a closed mind.

Maybe some people should take a leaf from the same book....the paper is recycled btw..."

Taking a few moments to look up some data, and taking a few moments to understand why burning fossil fuels is changing our climate will help a lot to understand what's going on and to strengthen and arguments against taking action to combat climate change that you might have.

Kilkenny, but Dublin is more fun

"What is driving that? Arctic/Antarctic ice melting into the ocean and cooling it?

Genuine question as I do not know!"

The la Nina/El Nino cycle is a natural cycle involving changes of how ocean currents function particularly in the Pacific ocean.

Issue is that there's external factors pushing it to become more unstable, between higher ocean temperatures (not just anthropogenic climate change but also cleaner shipping fuels in the last few years leading to the unfortunate consequences of lesser aerosols like sulphur dioxide which actually have a short term cooling effect when in the atmosphere and how increased ice melt of glaciers and at the poles changing how the currents flow).

Climate change is a natural phenomenon with many factors involved but when changes that usually take thousands or 10s of thousands of years to occur starting happening within a few decades, things become erratic.

Climate change creating global warming hence why the temperatures are so high within UK alone and possibly elsewhere but UK alone unexpectedly which eventually will create forest fires

Due to pollution

"Orbit changes, tilt of the earth changes ... for some reason they don't tell you that "

All effects upon climate are researched, so those who can be bothered to look - I'm taking a quick guess, that you didn't - and the data and conclusions are very watertight

The cause of global heating is people, since the start of the industrial revolution.

I started getting all misty eyed, from reading your waxing over the lovely benefits of CO2. . Unfortunately, it's a major contributor of global heating, it helps to retain heat in the world. Sure, plants need it, to complete photosynthesis but we have an abundance of it, there'll be no shortage of it, if we reduce our CO2 emissions

Greenhouse gases. CO2 concentrations were last at current levels about 16 million years ago, when the earth was much hotter.

Human caused greenhouse gases have led to the global heating, since the start of the industrial revolution (IPCC).
