"What's Incel, Mrs x"

INvoluntary CELibate, i e. someone that no one wants to sleep with.

Generally the reason is that they have obnoxious views about women, but instead of reflecting on that, the incels decide that it's the fault of the women that are ganging up to punish them.

Err please leave train enthusiasts/spotters out of this!

Incels are not nice and believe that so "beautiful people" are colluding to make sure that they can't have sex. They have very sinister points of view. Imagine believing that you should have access to a woman's body, just because you want to?

Obviously I was aware of the term but did some more reading. Not really a bunch of sad men but a very twisted ideology that has led to gang rps and mass shootings in the states.

Not quite, the first person to use the phrase involuntary celibate was a woman. It got abbreviated to incel and as with many words, the meaning has mutated into the current form, aimed at men who are unable to have a relationship with a woman, and believe women are at fault for this. Interesting article on line from CNN.

The original definition was between an on line community of women who used it to describe their shyness and social awkwardness, nothing to suggest anything more sinister. However the word caught on and has evolved to its current meaning, which has links to misogyny and other ideologies. Also, research into self identified incels suggests a higher than average level of mental health concerns.

I think the rise of the Incel is concerning. Is involuntarily celibacy on the rise?

You can easily identify some of the causes. The instant devision making “getting the ick” of swipe left or swipe right. The anonymity of the initial steps via online dating. The entitled immediacy online communication has engendered.

There have always been people (men and women) who were more socially awkward, especially around the opposite sex. But that isolation has been exacerbated by having gym fit adonis bodies bombarding us via inane vacuous TV like Love Island and Social Media “influencers”. The art of conversation and personality being able to cut through is diminishing as people get immediately factored out of contention with the movement of a finger.

It has always happened of course but perhaps when I was younger rejection was less brutal and immediate.

"There have always been people (men and women) who were more socially awkward ..."

The incel movement isn't about people that are socially awkward. It's about young men that have a warped idea of what masculinity is, and by voicing their opinions they make themselves unattractive to women (they're all straight, you don't find gay incels).

If I was the manager of a football team and we couldn’t win a game there are a few things I could do. I could change tactics and go about playing football differently. Secondly, I could go about improving the team by getting new, better players. Thirdly, I could whine about how everything is unfair, my players aren’t very good, and the fact my team loses every game is someone else’s fault, and how I hate football and the FA should force other teams to let me win.

Two of those solutions are more likely to provide an improvement in my chances of winning, but they would require effort on my part. The other would be really easy, require no effort but would almost certainly lower my chances of winning.

The old "do better, be better" statement. Not bad advice and I agree. Self improvement is a good thing.

Except, you and everyone else fails to realise that these young lads are playing a very different game than we where when we where when we where young.

The same rules no longer apply. Feminism, social media, the treatment of men socially and dating dynamic's have changed considerably in the last 30 years.

We'd all do better by trying to see why these young men feel the way they do rather than laugh at them for feeling the way they do. Build bridges between men and women and find out what everyone is happy with rather than point fingers and blame the other side for being the cause of all unhappiness.

And I do not care how that is taken because we all need to wake up. People are unhappy for a lot of different reasons.

Left wing, right wing, men, women.. .there are so many issues and yelling at each other and pointing fingers isnt fixing shit for men or women.

The worrying aspect is that incels are vulnerable to being groomed into other extremist ideologies.

Feminism is in it's 4th wave. What it was 100 years ago is a far cry from what it is now. There is a huge difference between wanting the right to vote vs challenging traditional gender roles, not wanting to be objectified whilst equally trying to normalise sex work and advocation for the LGBTQ community.

Women, society and ideology has changed considerably since i was a young man. What was is not the same as what currently is! I've had an aquarium full of fish for 25 years. It's still an aquarium but the fish, it's decoration and everything in it isn't the same as what it was when I first got it.

You imply you know about the mindset of incel's, what they expect and how they treat women. Now thats fair enough if you look at certain people within that space. I would not blame you for assuming all incels are unpleasant.

But then the media, feminists and voices on the left like to say red pill, manosphere, men's rights activists (MRAs), Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), pickup artists (PUAs), and fathers' rights group etc etc are all women hating misogynistic incel groups as well. They all get lumped in together because the over lap in some areas.

To me, saying all these men have the same sets of beliefs about women and treat women the same way is the metaphorical equivalent of saying every religious person is bad because of the behaviour of a few violent extremist individuals.

Thats not how things should work and nothing improves if people generalise.

But you also say "Men cant behave as they want and expect women to have sex with them".

Totally true.

And to that I say "Women cant behave as they want and expect men to have relationships with them" either.

We need to stop acting like men and women are the same. They're not. Doesn't make one side "less than". We just need to find the balance that works and we do not have it currently.

Men and women are different. No question. I don't believe anyone is acting as though men and women are the same. It's about equality, which is different. Equal access to jobs, education, housing etc.

Unfortunately, centuries of a patriarchal society is not easy to level. Male privilege exists.

Add into the mix social influencers who lead disenfranchised men to believe they, too, can be the "alpha" male and you have a population of men who not only believe they are entitled, but any woman who turns them down isn't worth anything, and the potential for verbal/physical/sexual abuse arises.

Why do we have to find a balance? If a group of men make themselves unattractive to women and don’t feel the need to change, then they don’t get to have sex. It’s really very simple. The only people it’s hurting are the ones who don’t want to change.

Of course all incels don’t have manosphere type attitudes but it’s still not for women to give them a pity fuck. Finally there seems to be something approaching equality when it comes to sex and relationships, and some men seem to be finding it tough, that doesn’t mean we should expect women to change in order to create some sort of artificial balance. It f men can’t get laid then they need to stop blaming other people, and start looking in the mirror.

The issue today is that there are social influencers now who are grooming the disenfranchised/ disconnected men into unhealthy attitudes and behaviours.

Everything has got to have a label and the fact the internet has given these nutbags a platform to spout their shit doesn't help.

Years ago this would have been some loudmouth idiot spewing nonsense in the local boozer on a Saturday night, which would have resulted in being called a fucking Muppet and ended up with him getting a slap from some hard as nails wife of one of the pubs hardmen.

A protest? I presume you have “legitimate concerns” then, like penguins getting smaller? Oh hang on, do you mean the birds or the chocolate bars? Is that a different group?

"I agree that something should be done to support anyone who is identified as or self identifies as an incel. However, many don't believe they need any help.

The worrying aspect is that incels are vulnerable to being groomed into other extremist ideologies.

it has never been easy for young men

The issue today is that there are social influencers now who are grooming the disenfranchised/ disconnected men into unhealthy attitudes and behaviours. "

There are also female influencers who are grooming woman into unhealthy attitudes and behaviours..

Women do not control who has sex with them. Women control who they allow to have sex with them - which is a very different thing. There are women who cannot find a sexual partner, should they be able to demand sex from any man they choose? Would you have sex with any woman who demanded it of you? Or do you reserve the right to turn down women that you don't find attractive?

"Yeah but as women control who has sex with them don't incels have a point to some extent?"

No.

The blokes that get described as incels think that women are inferior to men, and should be treated as such. This makes them unattractive to women. The incel mindset is to believe that all women are therefore conspiring against them to deny them their right to sex.

Imagine you're the sort of person that enjoys kicking dogs. After a short while, all the local dogs will run away when they see you coming. Do you then get angry at the dogs for denying you your fun?

The Village

it was once known as 'can't get laid' or being crap at talking to women. as per 21st century hysteria and the blog driven, meme fuelled desire to demonise various factions of society we are now encouraged to name, label and fear a group of insecure men who can't get a date. perhaps if they didnt behave so very entitled, rejection would be easier for them but liberals are encouraged by some outlets - the guardian in particular - to fear or hate 'incels' for their apparent part in the rise of the far right, due to their possibly 'extremist' views on women and misogyny. Here in the UK the the Home Office are currently looking to tweak the definition of 'extremism', so in a years time being an 'incel' might involve a police investigation or being up in front the beak at some point. Let's face it, 20-30 years ago the 'incels' wouldn't congregate online to comfort eachother through dealing with women who 'hate all men', they'd meet in a cafe or pub or library or cemetery and, ironically, increasing their chances of actually meeting someone.

before Mrs d (we've been together 2 decades now), before the term 'incel' was around and in the dying days of 90s lad culture, I was young, fat, lonely and didn't meet many girls. I could have easily gone down the incel route if I ever felt sufficiently sorry for myself to seek solace online. the Internet was young then, it didn't occur to me to look for solace anywhere. Fat and consequently shy (casual body shaming was a big bit of lad culture) I didn't find a group of fellow 'proto incels' to commiserate with, but what if I had? I probably wouldn't have decided to lose weight, make friends and then go places with them such as gigs and festivals..2 years later I met Mrs w. it wouldn't have happened if I stayed home commiseratimg online with bitter boys in the same boat as I. change starts inside with asking brutal questions of yourself. for me it was : is being fat the driver of all my misery? I knew lots of overweight people and their behaviour was not informed by how they looked in the way that mine was. I identified my weak point, basically.

Entitlement dampens such abilities and objectivity that's why I say 'incels' are driven by somewhat archiac notions of entitlement and probably never learnt the general 'rule' that if you're not endowed with symmetrical features, a killer body, prominent cheekbones or anything else traditionally found to be attractive qualities then you have to make up for it with being kind, funny and smart. again, 'incels' are often very good at protecting themselves from such probity.

You seem to think that all women have total choice and can have sex with anyone they want. Just like there are men who cannot find anyone that wants them, there are women who cannot find anyone that wants them.

A woman has the right to choose who she _allows_ to have sex with her, but she does not have any right to _demand_ someone to have sex with her. Men have these exact same rights.

I think the incel thing is another example of some of the bad things the internet has enabled.

The internet has created FOMO that it exacerbated by all these “influencers” supposedly living these amazing lives. Throw in the media obsession with the lives of the rich and (supposed) beautiful. And those with more mundane lives must feel everyone else is having a better life than them.

But most of the time it is smoke and mirrors.

Eg. An “influencer” spends the summer in Ibiza supposedly clubbing every night, eating in great restaurants, hanging around with beautiful people (with the implication they are also getting lots of sex). But it is a tiny snapshot of what for most of the week is a mundane experience where this glamorous influencer is actually sharing a cheap apartment in a dodgy part of town with several people living off Pot Noodles. Hardly glamorous but you don’t see that as they only share the carefully curated cool content.

Incels think everyone is having a better life and more sex than them. Some people are but not all. Somewhere like this place perpetuates the impression to them as it looks like lots of people are having a great time (some are) but never them.

So resentment grows and in their anger they want something or someone to blame. When they find their “tribe” the echo chamber simply magnifies their anger and resentment and is then preyed on by manipulators like Andrew Tate.

Without the internet connecting with your “tribe” was much harder.

I think all this is true but there’s more, women are getting far closer to equality than they ever have, there’s still a way to go but as a society we are making good progress. This scares some men, they don’t like not having the upper hand all the time. They don’t like the competition, and the fact that it’s no longer just men they have to compete against. These men can cope with being beats by ‘the better man’ but when they lose out to a woman they go nuts. They never look at themselves for the reason they post out on a promotion etc. it’s always down to feminism or political correctness, or some other excuse they can use to make themselves feel better.

It all plays into the same insecurities and sense of inadequacy, the 90% of women go for 5% of men bullshit, the blaming feminism for the inability to progress in work etc. All of it is down to insecurity and inadequacy, and of course laziness. They could work harder and improve but that takes effort, much easier to just blame other people.
