Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has promised to crack down on people "pushing harmful and hateful beliefs" and "kickstart" a new approach to fighting extremism in the wake of riots that broke out across the UK earlier this month.

I look forward to all the heads of religion being arrested.

But only if they have 'Harmful or Hateful' beliefs, and they are pushing them.

And they are already being arrested, tried and jailed.

Other than that, I don't see a problem with that approach. As long as it is used lawfully.

If you believe in Christianity and push it, which a minister clearly does then you're guilty.

And the 'hateful' part of it is?

I was in church with a friend for a Christening not that long ago - not a believer, but she is - and the most hate I saw was the Vicar pushing the over 70's Whist Club, Tombola and the Local Food Bank !!!!

I'd disagree with you there. It may be true that most religions have been used to push hate but, in my experience, most religions do not actually push hate.

There's a few asking similar questions, so I'm answering all.

Do you believe religion is peaceful?

I don't, in which case I'd categorise it under 'hateful beliefs'.

There seems to be more shit WITHIN the Abrahamic religions than between them and others.

And just in case you're not aware, Jehovah (Christianity), Yahweh (Judaism) and Allah (Islam) are names of the SAME God, the God of Abraham. The religions are man-made and this is where the troubles lie.

The politicians, the judges...?

And what is wrong with hate?

Are they really going to criminalize an emotion or feeling?

It's not being encouraged to be nice, it's criminalizing anyone who won't tow the line and ho deviates from their rule book.

Think things need to calm down before making any knee jerk reactions. As I have pointed out before I'm believer in freedom and support people's right to protest regardless if I agree with their views or not.

As long as its peaceful! However peaceful protests don't take much to turn sour! And if the government start banning protests then you're heading towards a totalitarian state?

It came up recently that Allah akbar being chanted when being chanted at a protest should be banned when it's used it prayer. Sorry but using it in prayer is one thing but shouting it in the streets is another and intending to intimate or make a statement (my Muslim friends agree on this) however where is the line drawn? Waving a union flag is fine but when it's used to intimate or make a statement??? Ban flag waving??? That won't go down too well!

Maybe if there is an organised protest then counter protests shouldn't be allowed at the same time? Is that undemocratic? No simple answers really

It's not particularly better or worse than any off them. They all preach peace and forgiveness but are all used as a means of persecuting those that are different. That's less to do with the basic religion and more to do with the culture the religion exists in.

The way they have magically used the tool of propaganda to brainwash so many in the western world into accepting their own demise with glee... I'd say it's pretty damn well what I mean.

Ah, you did mean it, safe to ignore you then."

Aye, ignorance is bliss.

"The death cult religion would be shaking, if not for being backed up by the police.

This will just be used to imprison more of the natives who don't like seeing the country being intentionally transmogrified.

I’m sure you don’t mean to but you’re coming across as a bit racist.

Also, transmogrified doesn’t mean what you think it does.

Many races follow Islam. I don't hate any race. I just hate Islam.

Whereas if you were to admit you hated the Christian religion, no-one would bat an eyelid. Christianophobia is not even on the naughty list.

“Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”

"All this, after Starmer has confirmed that he will review Online Safety Act again. It's almost like there is a contest between the Tories and Labour on who is more authoritarian. Hearing that Xi Jinping is already impressed."

I can see it now, part of your social score will be linked to sites visited, amount of time spent on the internet and who you follow.

I can literally hear Starmer saying something like the below:

I’m determined to crack down on the hateful use of the internet, going forward you will all be given a basic online allowance, this will be monitored and any bypassing of the limit set will lead to jail time, we have already provisioned 2000 places for the first wave. You can increase your basic time by Following labour, you will be given a 1 hour credit to use a week above and beyond the basic 30 minutes a day.

Follow reform and you will lose 1, 30 minute slot a week until you unfollow and follow labour.

If you we have no social security number for you, you will not be affected by this change.

The all parliamentary group are a bunch of idiots then. Islam is an ideology, just like communism or capitalism or fascism. Race is an immutable characteristic. Religion isn't. If I have the right to call other ideologies nonsense, I should have the right to call Islam nonsense too. No ideology should receive special treatment.

13 out of 14 countries which have death penalty for gays are Islamic. If anything, progressives should be the ones fighting against this ideology. Yet here they are shamelessly simping for it and bending over to this ideology. Goes on to prove my point that progressives never cared about minorities in the first place.

I am vocalising my hate for something, quick call the police on me. Islam is evil and a death cult. There I said it again.

Transmogrified, to transform appearance, sometimes or mostly through magical means.

The way they have magically used the tool of propaganda to brainwash so many in the western world into accepting their own demise with glee... I'd say it's pretty damn well what I mean.

Ah, you did mean it, safe to ignore you then.

Make up your mind! A few minutes ago you were claiming that you could read V’s mind and knew that he had used transmogrified out of context

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t mean to be racist, he’s confirmed that he in fact did, so that’s my mind made up.

Hope that explains it for you x

When did Islam become a race?

The All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims defines Islamophobia as:

“Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”

Do you not have the right to call Islam nonsense?

Is someone actually doing the "I'm not racist as Islam isn't a race" thing?????

Nobody ever said Islam was a race!

Race is quite an old fashioned term as so many people are mixed race and you are usually classed as your ethnic group.

When did you last fill out a form and it asked you to put in your race?

The original point I raised was about why a religion is treated as a race. There is a difference between calling something nonsense and calling something a death cult. But still, how is it called racism? If someone calls Scientology a death cult, would it be racism too? Because Scientology is also a religion. I have seen even worse things said about Christianity in this country. No one calls it a case of racism. Why does Islam deserve this special status?

Well you did not explain it. Racism is a problem because it's wrong to assume one's character based on a racial trait, which is something immutable and doesn't affect one's behaviour. Religion on the other hand is an ideology that one follows out of one's own will. If saying bad things about Islam is racism, saying bad things about Christianity, Capitalism or communism is also racist. There is no logical reason to treat them separately.

I have noticed that if Muslims as a minority have a small problem in any country, they are vocal about how it's such a terrible thing. Yet when the topic is about how minorities are treated like shit in Islamic countries, they would do all sorts of gymnastics to avoid talking about it, deflect or even justify it in some cases.

You saw the whole thing unfold when people were criticising Qatar during the football world cup. Islamists in those countries will treat minorities like shit because it's just their culture. Anyone who travels to Islamic Countries should follow their culture. But if Muslims visit other countries, it's those countries who have to change to accomodate their beliefs.

I repeat that a group of people with a specific agenda calling it racism doesn't make it racism. If a group of Christians say that attacking Christianity is racism, would you accept it? The desperate arguments Progressives make to defend a far-right religion like Islam are laughable at this point

Ask them their views on Sharia and about why most Islamic countries have death penalties for gays.

"All this, after Starmer has confirmed that he will review Online Safety Act again. It's almost like there is a contest between the Tories and Labour on who is more authoritarian. Hearing that Xi Jinping is already impressed.

Would you apply the same for followers of Scientology? There are some. Also whomever has told people to hate islam.

I've not been told to hate anything. I've made my own mind up. Mostly from seeing how Islam treats those who are not followers of their cult.

So it's mostly been Islam itself which has made me hate it. "

Do you not have the right to call Islam nonsense?

Someone called it a death cult and you called him a racist. Why?

Do you have the right to call Islam nonsense or not?

If I do, will it make me a racist or not? If I call it a death cult, will it make me a racist or not?

So no one has taken away your right to call Islam nonsense, just as you have the right to call any religion nonsense? Can you see the difference between call something nonsense and calling it a death cult?

The original point I raised was about why a religion is treated as a race. There is a difference between calling something nonsense and calling something a death cult. But still, how is it called racism? If someone calls Scientology a death cult, would it be racism too? Because Scientology is also a religion. I have seen even worse things said about Christianity in this country. No one calls it a case of racism. Why does Islam deserve this special status?

Can I refer you back to this part of the conversation.

The APPG on British Muslims defines Islamophobia as:

“Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”

A type of racism?

Would you say it is racist to target expressions of Christianity or perceived Christianity? "

I’d say the definition provided by the APPG puts it very well, Islamophobia is based in racism, and if white Christians in a predominantly non white Muslim country are targeted in the same way then that too would be racist. We need to always acknowledge that there is a power dynamic attached to racism, as well as the overt signs.

I’d say the definition provided by the APPG puts it very well, Islamophobia is based in racism, and if white Christians in a predominantly non white Muslim country are targeted in the same way then that too would be racist. We need to always acknowledge that there is a power dynamic attached to racism, as well as the overt signs.

A group of pro-Islam people decided to conflate their religion with race so that they can get more power and rest of the people are supposed to follow them like sheeps?

You know that they are ‘pro-Islam’?"

Naz Shah as Vice-Chair

Yeah sure. A political group is controlling language and its definitions and yet you want people to blindly follow whatever they say. The arguments they are making do not make any sense whatsoever.

Islam is an ideology. If Scientology can be called a death cult, so can Islam be.

When did Islam become a race?

The All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims defines Islamophobia as:

Do you not have the right to call Islam nonsense?

Do you have the right to call Islam nonsense or not?

If I do, will it make me a racist or not? If I call it a death cult, will it make me a racist or not?

That doesn't make sense to me.

Why would it be racist or not racist depending on location, surely it either is or isn't.

I can understand this and I feel this correct: Racists are more likely to be Islamophobic, but disliking or rejecting Islam as a religion is not inherently racist. Religion is not tied to any specific race and is a personal choice. Unless someone is wearing identifiable religious clothing, it's not immediately obvious what religion, if any, they practice.

Hope that explains it for you x

yep chickens voting for KFC comes to mind lol

If a person claiming to be a Muslim, Christian or anything else started a thread on here saying that all Gays, Bi's, adulterers and adulteresses should be flogged or put to the sword, I would be opposing them just as robustly as I'm opposing the intolerance and hate currently being shown by some on this thread.

A poll taken in 2016 found that more than half British Muslims believed homosexuality should be illegal

You need to look at how minorities are treated in Muslim majority countries to see the problem with this approach.

We are not in a Muslim majority country though, and as much as I disagree with outlawing homosexuality it’s not an opinion that is confined to Muslims."

It's not confined to Muslims. But majority of Muslims do. The ratios are much different between followers of Islam and other religions.

Can I ask you how many Muslims you know and what part of london are you from????

East London. Half of my team mates are Muslims.

Ok so you know a few, do they all share a hate filled ideology?

Wasn't really what I was asking but Ok I work with 3 Muslims, they are strict, go to Friday prayers, do fasting and everything. But they still go to the pub after work sometimes (don't drink alcohol) watch the same stuff on Netflix etc They are also disgusted at terror attacks claiming those extremist groups aren't real Muslims and don't speak for them.

I'm and atheist so don't really care just take people as I find them

Ask them their views on Sharia and about why most Islamic countries have death penalties for gays.

Either way, none of this explains why criticising followers of an ideology is racism. Is saying bad things about Scientologists racism? Why does Islam deserve special status?

I have done and they don't agree with the death penalty for gay people or anyone else.

Scientology? Never met any of them! Is it now a religion and not just a cult for the rich elite??? Personally I think that all everyone that believes in a god or an afterlife etc is slightly deluded but each to their own

Scientology is a religion. How exactly do you differentiate a religion from a cult with some beliefs like that?

Very interesting

I think taking the action of a few people to brand speaking against Islam itself as racism is what hyperbole actually means.

Or let's just follow your own path. There were some pro-palestine protestors who drove a convoy of cars with loudspeakers shouting "Fuck the jews. R&pe their daughters". There were also many antisemetic incidents around these protests, like defacing synagogues and sending threats. Should we brand pro-palestine protestors as antisemetic?

I agree with London dreams ( unusual for me ) Islamic countries in general are very intolerant of non Muslims and treat them like second or third class citizens. I do think however western government's failures to call them out and put pressure on them, ( because of geo politics ) especially Saudi Arabia out has not helped.

Also find Muslims I know are more influenced by their religion than non Muslim people I know. This can be regarding their politics or who they choose to associate with and even nationality allegiances.

Regarding race yes London dreams is right that Islam, like other religions is not a race. But I think most of the rioters recently who attacked minorities didn't really stop to check if they were Muslims. They associated people of brown skin as Muslims.

Well it would be hard to brand pro-Palestinian protesters as anti-semitic as Palestinian people are Semites too. But semantics aside, I would guess that quite a few Palestinians and other pro-Palestinian groups are either anti-Zionist and/or anti-Jewis and, where they've stepped over the line towards incitement to hate and/or violence, they've been met with the law.

Why are we seeing chatter about how some men view women now? What's changed in the last 20 year's? Immigration from foreign cultures, social media, ease of access to porn on the internet...

We don't need more rules and laws as there are plenty that cover unprovoked violence to other people. What is needed is actual enforcement, equally, to everyone that commits existing crimes.

The "death cult" comment was made by someone on the ideology itself. Do all Muslims who follow the ideology act like extremists? I don't think so. But vast majority of them hold beliefs which go against liberalism. We have polls in UK which shows that and most Islamic countries are examples of that.

In Birmingham, a few years ago, there was a protest by Muslim groups outside schools to stop LGBT education. They were calling teachers names. Yet not a single "progressive" opened their mouth about it because they were all busy attacking JK Rowling on twitter. If it were another religious group, we would have seen massive counter-protests by the pro-LGBT folks. The school was left alone to do legal battles to keep them away.

This is what happens if you give special status to one religion.

I think it's more a case of when ordinary folk see a crowd of angry white people, many with swastika tattoos and doing Nazi salutes, attacking a mosque filled with ethnically Asian people, like what happened in Southport and other places recently; they're inclined to believe that this violence is not actually motivated against the mosque and the people in it just because they don't believe "Christ is the the only true Saviour" or for any beliefs that those inside the mosque may hold. But far more likely to be being caused by the difference in the colour of skin between the people outside the mosque throwing the stones and chanting the hate slogans and those being forced to coware in fear inside.

If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and walks like a duck it's probably a duck.

If looks like racism, sounds like racism and acts like racism it's probably racism too.

Interesting. So a few people attacking a mosque means anyone who is against Islam must be a racist?

Only in the same way that a few radical extremist Muslims who follow a death cult means all Muslims must be extremists following a death cult.if only it was a few

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_world

1.9 Billion muslims in the world, would you care to say how many you think are terrorists?

Terrorism isn't the only problem? How many of their societies have death penalty for gays and treat women like sl@ves?"

Bonus question. How many if these countries have equal rights for people following other religions?

Huthis are an ethnic group. So you’ve named three organisations, using your logic, that’s 300,000. Out of all muslims that makes up 0.0017 percent.

Again do you care to come up with a number out of 1.8 billion, how many are terrorists?

Your hyperbole, speaks volumes

I think taking the action of a few people to brand speaking against Islam itself as racism is what hyperbole actually means.

Or let's just follow your own path. There were some pro-palestine protestors who drove a convoy of cars with loudspeakers shouting "Fuck the jews. R&pe their daughters". There were also many antisemetic incidents around these protests, like defacing synagogues and sending threats. Should we brand pro-palestine protestors as antisemetic?

After all, "If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and walks like a duck it's probably a duck."

Why don't you apply the same nuances to people speaking against Islam instead of branding everything as racism?"

I do apply the same nuance to people speaking against Islam.

A teacher who drew the forbidden picture 5 years back is still living in hiding. This is when Muslims form a very small percentage of the population. You just have to look at Muslim majority countries to see how the majority of them feel about minority religions.

I'm pretty sure I commented on the case your talking about regarding Muslims and education at the time; possibly even in one of the many threads on here at the time. I see it as no different than when I've criticised over zealous Christians. As for J.k. Rowling; whilst I don't agree with everything she says I more often find myself in general agreement with her than not. I'm also not particularly progressive in my politics but do try to stand against intolerance when I see it.

Oklahoma lorry bomber had connections to Christian fundamentalists. The destruction of the Amritsar temple in India was by Hindu nationalists. The slaughter of Muslims in Srebrenica my Orthodox Christians, The murder of 6 million Jews and 2 million Romanese by National Socialist. The killing of over 10 million people by the Communist in Russia.

I was looking for the voices when it happened. I couldn't find any. As I mentioned, the school was left to fight a legal battle by themselves which took a while. Until then they had to suffer verbal abuse at the hands of these people.

You are making strawman arguments and moving goalposts here. No one said it's ok to use violence. My question was why is saying bad things against Islam considered racism when Islam is a religion. You randomly pointed out some racists in the protests acting violently and used this as an excuse to justify calling anti-Islamic views as racism. And yet, when I pointed out the same behaviour by pro-Palestinian protestors, you said it's only a very few people who did that it's unfair to brand the entire group as antisemetic. Where is the consistency here?

Reading this thread it seems very strange that race and religion are switched around to prove hating on a religion is racist.

It makes no sense whatsoever, the clue is in the words… race - religion.

arguments go deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole, are there radicalised thoughts meaning people really believe race and religion are one of the same, where does this idea come from?

There isn't any logic or rationality behind their arguments. For them, it's a simple case of enemy of an enemy is a friend. They see Islam as enemy of right wingers and hence Islam is their friend. They have to bend over backwards to defend it by making insane moral arguments.

Remember what happened to Richard Dawkins. The guy was an idol for the progressives when he was attacking Christianity. He was cancelled and branded an Islamophobe the moment he did the same with Islam. Don't waste your time looking for moral consistency in Progressives.

When did Islam become a race?

The All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims defines Islamophobia as:

“Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”

No, that would be religious hatred. Hate incidents/crimes are not restricted to race. There are 5 protected characteristics in law - race, religion (includes lack of religion), gender identity, sexual orientation and disability.

Why don't you apply the same nuances to people speaking against Islam instead of branding everything as racism?

I do apply the same nuance to people speaking against Islam.

Then why do you think it's ok to conflate speaking against Islam as racism, just because a few of them are racists?

I don't. I think I've already said that it's OK to hate any religion, theology or believe. However it's not OK to hate people because of their religion, theology or belief. Further it's not OK to try to insight hatred or violence against anyone. So I don't conflate everyone that is critical of Islam as racist, I'm critical of many aspects of Islam myself, but I do call it racist when it looks and sounds like racism, as with recent violent attacks against mosques and anyone who looks like what those attacking them thinks a Muslim may look like.

"

I think it's you that's trying to use a straw man argument. I've repeatedly said that it's OK to criticise Islam or any other beliefs or religion but it's not OK to hate anyone because of their belief and it's not OK to say things about any group or person that insights hate or violence. I've also said repeatedly that I don't believe that everyone who is critical of Islam is a racist and that I'm often critical of many aspects of Islam myself. However I stand by the statement that if it looks like racism, sounds like racism and acts like racism it's probably is racism and to me, and would guess most reasonably minded people in this country, what happened in Southport and other places around the country, was not just a fair and reasonable criticism of Islam but a racist attack on a group of people not even because of what they either do or don't believe, but because of the colour of their skin.

Only in the same way that a few radical extremist Muslims who follow a death cult means all Muslims must be extremists following a death cult.if only it was a few

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_world

1.9 Billion muslims in the world, would you care to say how many you think are terrorists?well you said a few we all know that’s shite isis had around 100 thousand at its peak then there’s hamas taliban huthis and many many more can’t think of any from other religions tbh

Evel and hate has never been the prerogative of any religion, believe or ideology."

silly me I was talking about this century lol how far do ya wana go back a few thousand maybe

Fair

"

but it's not OK to hate anyone because of their belief"

I could argue against whether it's OK or not OK. But that would be a different argument. The question is why is it considered racism?

"

and it's not OK to say things about any group or person that insights hate or violence. "

No one said it's ok to incite violence.

"

I've also said repeatedly that I don't believe that everyone who is critical of Islam is a racist and that I'm often critical of many aspects of Islam myself. "

I explained to you multiple times that the people who did that were racist. Why do you brand the entire group of people who are anti-Islamic as racist? If everyone who is anti-Islamic is racist because a few of them were clearly racist, all pro-Palestinian protestors are anti-semitic because a few of them clearly are.

"Who decides what hate is?

The politicians, the judges...?

Who is to say they are right?

And what is wrong with hate?

Are they really going to criminalize an emotion or feeling?

Where did this wooley idea come from that everyone and everything has to be nice ?

Try tolerance.

You shouldn't tolerate hateful things "

You have got the wrong end of the stick. Being hateful is wrong but one doesn't have to be nice, however one should be tolerant.

"Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has promised to crack down on people "pushing harmful and hateful beliefs" and "kickstart" a new approach to fighting extremism in the wake of riots that broke out across the UK earlier this month.

I look forward to all the heads of religion being arrested.

But only if they have 'Harmful or Hateful' beliefs, and they are pushing them.

And they are already being arrested, tried and jailed.

Other than that, I don't see a problem with that approach. As long as it is used lawfully.

Every religion pushes hate.

Lol. If you believe that (!), But you have to prove that in a court of Law.

Baby Jesus may take issue with you.

If you believe in Christianity and push it, which a minister clearly does then you're guilty.

Islam is clearly the worst of the abrahamic faith's

It's not particularly better or worse than any off them. They all preach peace and forgiveness but are all used as a means of persecuting those that are different. That's less to do with the basic religion and more to do with the culture the religion exists in."

Or rather, less to do with faith and more to do with the culture of the religion. I know, I know, almost the same thing

Transmogrify - to change or change completely."

In a humorous/strange/grotesque way.

Many races follow Islam. I don't hate any race. I just hate Islam.

It is neither a death cult, nor evil. Perhaps you should read the Qu'ran sometime and interpret it yourself.

Some Muslims may be as you describe due to extremism, but don't tar them all with the same brush.

"

Calling Islam nonsense is not promoting hate speech towards Muslims. You could be an atheist or an orthodox believer of an alternative religion.

" If you mean the hate that flows from imams and vocalists who preach Islam, the yes their hate speech has affected me.

There are some. Also whomever has told people to hate islam.

I've not been told to hate anything. I've made my own mind up. Mostly from seeing how Islam treats those who are not followers of their cult.

So it's mostly been Islam itself which has made me hate it. "

Islam is the faith.

You appear to be reinforcing my point.

You're agreeing with me that Islam is a hateful religion then. And therefore should be hated.

What?

No, I have been arguing that hateful rhetoric results in hateful and prejudice opinions amongst members of the public. Which you were demonstrating with your posts.

What's so wrong about hating an ideology? "

Hating is an emotion. It's the consequential behaviour people are alarmed about, or inciting others to behave in non peaceful ways.

The desperate arguments Progressives make to defend a far-right religion like Islam are laughable at this point "

I think it's more to do with conflating race and faith/religion.
