I'm 'kinda' for this, in the sense that they should never be taken into school, or allowed for use in school.

I'm also for schools having metal detectors - but that's a whole other story.

Just to add:

France already bans phones from schools for pupils.

9 regions in Spain.

Dutch Schools ban phones.

Italy too.

It's also quite common across America.

Correct. Mine have to hand in at start of the day and retrieve at the end. They can request temporary return at lunchtime for "exceptional" cause.

Never going to happen.

My daughter has her phone (iPhone 13) because it’s a hand down, we wouldn’t go and spend £1000+ on a phone for a 12yo.

There is getting more and more of these companies that buy old tech now, I think that will help. When a parent thinks I can give our kid this phone or send it away and get £500 (probably to spend on and ).

Mine has an iphone. Are you saying I am irresponsible? If so why? Because I consider myself pretty intelligent and switched on. My child is an accomplished athlete at County and National level, is performing very well academically. Has completed Duke of Edinburgh Bronze with Silver next.

It's irresponsible to buy a kid a phone?

It could be argued that its irresponsible not to buy them a phone. 1 for safety measures (they can be tracked) and 2 to stop them being bullied because they would be the only kid without one.

Particularly if they have unrestricted and unsupervised access to the Internet.

I would have been quite happy for them to be banned so I could have resisted buying our daughter one for longer. As it was, she didn't get one until well into her teens (years after all her peers) and when she did get it, it was completely locked down and social media was banned.

The controls were gradually relaxed as she became older.

Now she is over 18 she can do what she wants.

You do like to make sweeping statements and then when challenged or probed your context dilutes your original argument.

Absolutely agree re age appropriate access and locked down phones that relax as they get older and more mature. But that wasn’t your original point!

I believe China restricts children’s phones

So no phone use in school then only one hour a day internet max for all under 16s.

The BBC reported China is bringing in two hour restrictions for 16-18 year olds.

It has to sensible judging by the obsessive behaviour we all see.

The art of socialising as we know it is disappearing. Yes I know the young socialise on their phones but it’s definitely not the same first hand human interaction.

Let’s not start on the massive problems associated with phones around bullying, mental health and false political narratives etc etc

China has seen the mistakes we have made and doesn’t plan to do the same.

China does however also have a more sinister control approach which needs to be noted.
