I'm sure that my arrière-grand-mère used to tell me they had these during the war. Only, I think that they were called War Bonds. lol.

So. Are you going to buy any? On sale today.

Come on - let's put the Great back in Britain (tic)

Seems like a reasonable rate of interest over three years.

I have premium bonds. Is this another version of that or a standard type saving account?

It’s a fair rate of interest but taxable

ISAs have similar rates and interest paid tax free and the extra £5000 British isa allowance announced in the budget, although this has now been delayed pending a consultation.

Does it not come under the tax free allowance for non ISA savings. Basic rate tax payers get the first £1000 of interest free of tax and for higher rate tax payers it is the first £500 of interest free of tax

With the maximum allowed number of Premium Bonds (£50,000), you’re pretty much assured of a win every month. This month I won £125, in March £50, February £200, January £150, December £125, November £50, October £75…

My average return has been only 3%, but no risk, no faffing about with HMRC tax thresholds and, of course, the chance of a BIG prize.

The missus has the maximum £50,000 too, but she keeps her winnings to herself!

Despite the jingoistic hype, we too are NOT tempted...
