MPs and peers sign letter urging UK government to ban arms sales to Israel

A letter signed by more than 130 parliamentarians to the foreign secretary, David Cameron, highlights action taken by other countries, most recently Canada, which last week announced it would halt all arms exports to Israel.

The letter argues that “business as usual” for UK arms exports to Israel is “totally unacceptable”. It says UK-made arms are being used in Gaza, noting a recent UN investigation that found an F-16 fighter jet made with UK parts was probably responsible for the bombing of British doctors in Gaza.

Uk weapons used in the massacre of Palestinian civilians.

So these 130 Parliamentarians would have Israel defencless against Hamas and other Iran-back militias intent on wiping them off the face of the earth? Anti-Sematism alive and well in the UK then I see.

Doesn't seem to be much "defence" going on. Unless of course mass bombing civilians is "defence" now-a-days

That phrase has been used so much it now has no meaning anymore.

Even the USA are now anti due to abstaining at the UN and it is the USA arming them amongst others.

Politicians want endless wars and sales of military equipment, it's good for business, Ukraine defeating Russia is good for business, Israel defeating Hamas is good for business it brings in the tax returns. Migration is good for business is the chant, they say the loud stuff quietly and the quiet stuff loud.

True, but it is antisemitic to want to leave Israel defenceless, against an organisation that wants to wipe out the majority of the world's Jews.

I'm a zionist, and you don't have to be Jewish to support the Jewish people's need for self-determination - which is what Zionism is.

Also, Israel is not responsible, Islam is responsible.

The Quran and Hadiths have a lot of stern words to say about Jews, including incitment to kill them - the idea that Jews could have any authority over Muslims is why - to be protected as 'people of the book' (dhimmi) they need to follow the rules set by their Islamic leaders, and a Jewish controlled land breaks this rule.

For example, Book 54, Hadith 1...

"The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews."

It's cleverly sold to us westerners as a humanitarian issue, but the roots of the problem are religious.

Use of the term apartheid is political hyperbole.

It is not an apartheid - 20% of the Israeli citizenship are not Jewish and have all the rights of any other person living there; you can even see street signs up with both Hebrew and Arabic translations.

Conversely, try going to Gaza as a Jew and see what happens.

Oct 7th, how many Jewish children died because the IDF responded to an active hostage situation with tanks and battle helicopters firing missiles?

"Oct 7th, how many Jewish children died because the IDF responded to an active hostage situation with tanks and battle helicopters firing missiles?"

If you follow news closely, you'll see that accusations of friendly fire have not yet been fully confirmed and most of the claims come from Arab sources.

I'll accept though, that it is possible some people were killed in the crossfire, and as unfortunate as this is, it is still not the same as deliberately murdering children because they are Jewish.

However, I've seen the rest of the massacre footage myself - and people getting their heads hacked off with shovels is not a helicopter attack.

Tactics,

Target mothers and children with bombs cutting off food and water, and utilities.

When women are killed they will no long reproduce because they have been murdered.

When children are murdered they will not reproduce in the future.

Hence the population will hinder and eventually die, eventually they will be no population because the women have been murdered.

In short depriving a race of people the ability to reproduce is in fact genocide, in fact it is tactical and targeted genocide in the most evil of ways.

I now believe the people of Palestine have the right to defend itself, but it seems things are so bad the population are asking why Israel do not just get it done and kill them all.

That is what victims of torture say to the torturer when the pain gets to bad.

People condemn the attacks made by hamas on the 7 October all the time but this all started much earlier from the 1940s.

From a political view point, cutting off the supply is a good thing. From a military perspective it’s pretty much irrelevant. As is the Canadian embargo. The US supply dwarfs everyone else’s ( I think the US proportion is two thirds of arms imports?).

Plus the Israelis have a massive industrial complex in the Negev that makes huge amounts of vehicles, weapons, ammunition etc that the Israelis export. They won’t miss us.

Not all Israeli’s support their Govt…

“Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Jerusalem on Sunday (31 March) in the largest protest against the Benjamin Netanyahu‘s government since the country went to war with Hamas in October.

Protesters urged the government to reach a cease-fire deal to free dozens of hostages held in Gaza by Hamas militants and to hold early elections.

The crowd stretched for blocks around the Knesset, or parliament building in the city’s downtown district, and organisers vowed to continue the demonstration for several days.

They urged the government to hold new elections nearly two years ahead of schedule.

Thousands also demonstrated Sunday in Tel Aviv, where there was a large protest the night before.”

Err… the sugar industry crashed so glavery became un-economical. There had been an abolitionist movement for at least a century before, but parliament didn’t take any notice until revenues were hit. Shocker. Parliament only did the right thing when money loss was involved. Nothing ever changes.

Very true. Equating the UK to stopping sending it tiny amount of arms sales (it’s actually mostly comms equipment), to Israel being unable to defend itself is ludicrous in the extreme.

Apparently the government has been asked to make clear their leagle advice given to them by government lawyers, concerning the legality of selling arms to Israel who are committing war crimes.

Apparently the government have been advised that it is illegal, but they have ignored the advice and continue to sell arms.

It shows the two faced attitude of governments it is ok for Israel to murder thousands but Putin is the bad guy because the west say so.

At a select committee meeting Cameron (who does not have to answer questions in the commons as he is a peer) was asked what advice he was given regarding Israels behaviour in Gaza (as it is a select committee he is required to answer) he stated that he cannot remember what every piece of paper that crosses his desk says.

If indeed the government was given advice that continued arms sales to Israel was illegal then they could find themselves at the ICJ for war crimes, as supporting or arming a country who has committed war crimes makes the UK complicit.

I'm not sure how war crimes could be levelled against the sale of weapons or components.

I have not seen one gun or ammunition manufacturer charged with a crime if their product has been used to kill.

How is this different?

Bad choices made on who those arms have been sold to

Human rights headchoppers Saudi Arabia have been sold UK weapons that have played a central role in war crimes in the war in Yemen

Who supplied the bombs to kill the latest aid workers targeted by Israel

Hey now we all have been told again and again that Israel has a right to defend itself, and if that means killing anything that moves regardless of nationality then that's ok.

Tongue firmly in cheek.

It's cleverly sold to us westerners as a humanitarian issue, but the roots of the problem are religious.

"

True that. It all started with a land chosen for the chosen people who killed Jesus.

Anyway, I imagine banning arms sales wouldn't dent much of the deliberate collateral damage the Israelis are doing. Some of the most destructive weapons are fabricated there anyway. The main upside would be the reduction of the laundering that is happening from monies moving there and here, and the potential to impact the free cushty lifestyle most Israelis get at the expense of every taxpayer.

The threat is Israel as well as Hamas.

I'd suggest that mass killing tens of thousands of civilians that have been corralled over decades into the most densely populated place on the planet, and then cutting off their water, food and medicine will likely be a huge recruitment drive for Hamas and other organisations who want to do harm to Israel and to others.

1. Deliberately and viciously attack a clearly marked convoy

2. Go on TV and be ever so sorry about the "tragic mistake"

I do not think the supporters of Israel could comment since British people have now been murdered on a route they clearly agreed with the IDF.

IDF

.“We were not interested in killing [Hamas] operatives only when they were in a military building or engaged in a military activity,” one said. “It’s much easier to bomb a family’s home”

IDF’s targeting processes in the most intensive phase of the bombardment were also relaxed, they said. “There was a completely permissive policy regarding the casualties of [bombing] operations,” one source said. “A policy so permissive that in my opinion it had an element of revenge.”

Do you find any of it reprehensible?

Yes and yes, but show me large movements of Jews or Christians who, in this century, apply literal interpretations to the point of enforcing it with violence.

Evangelical Christians who are behind a host of legal efforts to roll back abortion rights in USA and remove LGBTQ+ protections and promoting violence and demonizing trans people has seen a huge increase in its funding 100 million plus in 2023 alone and has funneled some of that money to a slew of smaller anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-abortion groups not only across the US but in some predominantly Christian countries in Africa and South America. Last year alone in 12 predominantly Christian countries legal systems were increasingly weaponized in 2023 to systematically target and discriminate against LGBTI individuals. This includes instances where laws were egregiously employed to persecute and marginalize members of the LGBTI community, highlighting a distressing trend of legal mechanisms being used as instruments of oppression. All funded by evangelicals Christain movements in USA "

None of that includes massacres or executions - and if it does, where are the protests?

Nobody has been thrown off rooftops, beheaded, bombed or and nobody has run into a magazine office, machine-gunning people for their cartoons.

Not too long ago, the Houthis executed a load of people for the crime of being gay -- meanwhile pro-Palestinian protesters are celebrating their bombing of cargo vessels in the Red Sea.

It's a crazy world where the only democracy in the Middle East is being vilified for standing up to terrorism.

This is just deflection from what's happening !

Plus I don't think you answered my question..

Did the aid organisation deserve being attacked for supplying food water and other supplies to "the animals in Gaza"? Based on your previous statements

I could go on but seems like you are only cherry picking what suits your narrative or uneducated and uniformed person. Lots of examples. You are either naive or delusional but let me give you couple of recent events you probably missed. Christchurch mosque shootings by Brenton Harrison Tarrant or mass killing in Norway by Anders Behring Breivik.

Israel is finished and is a failed state. Failed to protect our interests, failed to protect their borders, failed to uphold our values and international law, failing economically and a financial burden on USA and west.

It is a religious war waged against the innocent people of Gaza when Satanyahu reading biblical passage and at the same time dropping bombs on innocent children and women.

Only democracy in middde east up my arse. Apartheid South Africa had once so called democratically elected government.

Zionism is dead. Isreal has lost this war not only militarily but morally too. If only thing have come out of 7th October is that the world clearly sees now who they really are. Murderers, blood thirsty genocide supporting war criminals.

Why make arms if we are not going to sell them? Surely the whole trade is unethical, why get morals about who is using what and on who? It’s naive to think any war is moral and just!

"A letter signed by more than 130 parliamentarians to the foreign secretary, David Cameron, highlights action taken by other countries, most recently Canada, which last week announced it would halt all arms exports to Israel.

Since 2008 it has cost us over 542m to arm Israel to do their dirty work.

It's a crazy world where the only democracy in the Middle East is being vilified for standing up to terrorism.

You speak of cherry picking but let's have it right...

He asked for 'large movements' yet you cherry picked 2 lone wolves.

This just sounds like projection.

I’ll answer you. But let’s start with

Do you condemn these attacks?

Do you condemn targeted killing of staff members of World central kitchen and British citizens by IDF terrorist?

Or you could start with answering what I said should you wish to engage. I won't be drawn into you 'my religion is better than yours' view.

John Chapman, James Henderson and James Kirby were our heroes and fought wars and serve this country and were killed in the targeted attack by IDF terrorists and you are so callous that you can’t condemn that. Clearly shows where your loyalties lies

You have no idea where my loyalties lie (neither side as it happens), you've proved my point though, you're not interested in seeing your own hypocrisy "

"Have you read any of the Talmud?

All funded by evangelicals Christain movements in USA

None of that includes massacres or executions - and if it does, where are the protests?

The U.S. are getting a bit jittery over the political fall out of the actions in Gaza. I wonder if Israel are more inclined to spread the conflict with others like Iran in the hope that if other nations attack Israel it will bolster support from the Americans. Just a thought

Two things here…..

1) I think the thing about “this one” is a combination of the organisation, which everyone is saying is above reproach.. and the fact that it wasn’t 1 attack, it was 3 attacks separated to make it worse…

1…oops

2… damn

3…. Shit!!!!!

You could absolutely argue the attack on the embassy, in diplomatic terms is worse because it could drag it more global… does the retaliation come from Syria, or Lebanon, or Yemen…..

Israel’s excuse of “it wasn’t an embassy, it was a consulate!” Doesn’t fly!

"Have you read any of the Talmud?

All funded by evangelicals Christain movements in USA

None of that includes massacres or executions - and if it does, where are the protests?

Nobody has been thrown off rooftops, beheaded, bombed or and nobody has run into a magazine office, machine-gunning people for their cartoons.

Not too long ago, the Houthis executed a load of people for the crime of being gay -- meanwhile pro-Palestinian protesters are celebrating their bombing of cargo vessels in the Red Sea.

It's a crazy world where the only democracy in the Middle East is being vilified for standing up to terrorism.

So You are not going to condemn murder of British citizens who serve in our Army by IDF terrorists? Who is hypocrite here?

I think it’s about time to flush out extremist Zionist politicians out of our political parties and kick out Israel out of our politics. Deradicalize the section of section of society and Any British citizen who joined IDF in the past and are still enrolled into program needs to be investigated for war crimes if they have committed any. What makes anyone think an arm saled ban will actually work, I am sure the UK will still sell arms to any country with a ban in place, the weapons will be sold through an independant arms dealer.

It's weird seeing you constantly moving to goalposts to justify your support of the mass killings of civilians."

The mass killing of civilians (and nobody knows the correct figure) is justifiable for the greater good.

It is unpleasant, but if you want to remove the Islamist nutjobs from Gaza, you're not gonna do it by offering them a cup of tea and nice words.

It's a war, and wars are chaos.

How would you fix the problem?

I read (think on the bbc) that UK arms sales to Israel account for just 0.02% of Israeli military imports so more of a political gesture than making a difference. Both Germany and Italy sell them much more than the UK

Yes the UK sells very little military equipment to Israel, but I suppose it's a point of principle and sends out a message if others follow (a big if). We buy more military hardware than we sell from Israel, and that could be halted - but then our military lose access to critical equipment and spares. If we feel that strongly, why don't we seize the assets of Israeli citizens UK - as we have done with Russian Oligarchs? Double standards perhaps?

Up until now pretty much all your posts have been considered, well thought out, and made valid arguments. But this one…no!

Mass killing of civilians is NEVER justified. EVER. Israel’s actions have gone way beyond collateral damage. Yes Hamas are using civilians as human shields which shows what cowards and scum they are and is also unacceptable. But the Israeli response to 7 October is disproportionate. If Russia targeted Ukrainian civilians to the same degree with “mass killings” there would be utter condemnation.

I think your statement is really disappointing and not in line with your other, more intelligent posts.

With Israel turning its attention towards the puppet masters in the middles east with a clear attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, I think we will see a slowing down of military activity in Gaza.

Lebanon and Iran are already being stirred up by Russia and China, which I feel is ironic considering Iran’s involvement in the terrible events that led to all of this.

"Criticism of the Israeli government, and the IDF is not antisemitism.

True, but it is antisemitic to want to leave Israel defenceless, against an organisation that wants to wipe out the majority of the world's Jews.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting leaving Israel defenceless, just not sell it weapons while it is murdering children.

It’s hard to believe someone needs this explaining.

Blowing up my children would be the perfect way to radicalise me, if I had any.

That goes both ways, if you come into my house and cause harm, trust me, it'll come back ten-fold. "

Hamas very cynically started all this carnage with the October massacre, capture and sexual nastiness knowing the fury that would be unleashed upon their own people with the cynical knowledge that they then would be viewed by the world as victims.

They seem to be succeeding.......

It started on May 14th 1948. Palestinian women and girls have been subjected to sexual assaults, including r4pe even before October 7th by IDF terrorists. October 7th just exposed the real face of Zionist regime. Footage from CCTV, dashcams, personal phones and headcams of killed Hamas fighters, has also found that many of the stories that came out in the days following the attack were false. These include claims of atrocities such as the mass killing and beheading of babies as well as allegations of widespread and systematic r4pe. stories that were used repeatedly by politicians in Israel to justify the ferocity of the subsequent bombardment of the Gaza.
