It's hard to evaluate the 'value' we get from defence spending, but what if Putin prevails in Ukraine? Who next?

What a conundrum, £2.5 billion it is pretty much the same amount we spend on housing asylum seekers in the UK a year.

The difference in where the money goes couldn't be further apart...

We are selling Storm Shadow misiles around the world like hot cakes at £2m a go.

When Ukraine succeeds in regaining its territory it will need investment. The UK will be there to offer, at a profit, infrastructure and technical support plus inward financial investment. The Ukraine will also start to pay back those who helped it.

In the mean time Russia will be on its knees and beholden to India, China and North Korea who will buy its only product, fuel and gas, at knock down prices.

Sure I read that Ukraine discovered huge gas reserves and shortly after Russia invaded. If Putin is defeated then Ukraine owe the west a lot, including lucrative access to that Gas. It is an investment (although we know the value can go up or down).

1,717 tanks, 755 AFVs, 2279 IFVs, 104 helicopters, and 91 aircraft all visually confirmed Russian losses, in addition to the hundreds of thousands of soldiers, several Russian ships and all for a fraction of Western military spending. All of that has been lost since February 2022. I can only hope that additional British aid will result in more Russian casualties.

Russia launched the war, Russia should pay for the damage.

All state monies held in any accessible banks or belonging to high net worth individuals known to have supported the war to be seized and redirected to rebuilding Ukraine. This includes overseas property and possessions.

If you think Ukraine has any thought on repaying, then you're deluded. These aren't loans.

We're telling striking NHS doctors and teachers that they should shut up and get back to work on a salary that is lower than the equivalent elsewhere because WE CAN'T AFFORD IT. But we have money to spend on Arms for other countries. We're not replacing crumbling schools because we can't afford it.

What would happen if Russia was to annex Ukraine? Nothing, it'll go back to being a part of Russia like it used to be, and NATO can no longer use it to host anyi russian arms

There's around 75k junior doctors in England alone, topping just them up by £10k each would be in excess of £750,000,000 alone. Do you think there is sufficient slack in our defence budget to cut to cover that? The heads of the armed forces might be wanting words about that. Austerity affected them as much as any other service. 2.2% of GDP is too low as it is. I agree we should strive to pay junior doctors more, it's why we have a serious recruitment issue. Our inability to keep them is appalling but a plan for it would have to include additional tax, cuts elsewhere (good luck with that, or additional borrowing. Which is it?

And as for just assuming Ukraine will just go back to the Russian sphere of influence peacefully...that's just wishful thinking. Ukraine hasn't fought tooth and nail just so they can give up and be like 'yeah it's cool, Britain just needs more doctors'. They will keep fighting, they have no desire for occupation and subjugation. The Russian occupation of Kherson could tell you that. And that's part of the country that's Russian-speaking.

Actually I agree. Regardless of the legality or not of any war (which people on one side will argue one way and people on the other, the opposite), it essentially boils down to this...if you come over here and break my toys (civilian/non-military infrastructure), then you pay for their repair. Collateral / Non-Military damage ? Absolutely.

It doesn't matter which side is the aggressor. You break their civilian infrastructure, you pay for it.

On first para, everything from USA Feb 2022 to 30 sept 2023, approx $100bn at that time is provided through lend lease

On repayment, allies hold $630bn in Russian currency assets under global sanctions. In 2023 released some Russian funds to pay for aid.

Allies are quietly discussing the $630bn to fund Ukraine’s military needs. Broadly 5 years supplies can be paid by Russian confiscated currency assets.

Russia was nearly bankrupted by their war in Afghanistan which was nothing like as impactful on normal society than the current SMO in Ukraine.

Russia will lose the war in Ukraine just as they lost the war in Afghanistan, but the allies of Ukraine need the make sure that Putin (Russia) has a safe place to go at the ending of the Ukraine SMO so that after this horrible “war” the past can be put to bed and a new future looked forward to.

well beggar boy is worth a damn sight more than he was before the war started and his mrs seems to love spending big round europe, and his side kicks also seem to be doing a lot better, but anyway we all know how this ends, when ukraine eventually lose he either flees with bags of cash just like the afghan president did when afghanistan fell, or he gets strung up by his own side, one things for sure though he shouldnt get another penny from us, i dont pay taxes to prop up a eastern europe shithole

I'm not asking for tangible evidence (though that would be nice), I'm just asking what stories or rumours he has heard.

But all the poster does is assert that Zelensky's wealth has increased, and say that his wife has been shopping. He was a rich man before he came to power, so spending some money isn't much of a clue as to whether he's got wealthier or not.

I'm beginning to think that the poster just believes it, without having any reason at all.

Britain finished paying off WW2 debts (e.g. lease/lend) from the USA in Dec 2006.

The Ukraine will be beholden to the west for many years. That is how this works.

I hope Russia gets severely charged for invading the Ukraine too.

So happy to see Ukraine fall as a stepping stone even if it then costs the UK 10x the amount if Putin invades a NATO country.

And in the mean time gas and energy will just go up in prise so Russia can build more arms to fight with. And the price of grain , vegetable oils. ETC we depend on Ukraine for quite alot?

"People on the street homeless and destitute and they use our money for another insane war. Disgusting "

$630bn seized Russian currency assets seized under global sanctions.

Discussion in progress to use this as military and aid for Ukraine.

In the long run Russia may end up paying for all western support.

.

That is a rather sweet and fitting idea.

I'd go further and say for every Russian Dollar Equivalent they spend on their war effort, 10 US Dollars equivalent is seized from Russian assets and spent on resupplying the Ukraine military.

.

Ultimately Russian money will be redirected to fund military equipment used against Russian military.

.

That missile that just took out a Russian Unit was funded, in part, by the very same soldiers in that unit.

.

Spray paint the ordinance "From Russia, With Love".

"funny since all this started beggar boy and his cronies all seem to be a lot richer

What evidence have you seen of their increased wealth?

well beggar boy is worth a damn sight more than he was before the war started ...

That's just re-stating what you said earlier. What evidence have you seen of his increased wealth? Has he started wearing designer clothes? Has he been seen chasing to the local Ferrari dealer? What is it you're seeing that shows that he's more wealthy?he hasnt no he is still playing dress up in his olive green outfits, his mrs on the other hand is splashing cash round europe, cpl of nice propertys in the u.s and europe since all this started and a nice boat moored up in the med, and lets not forget all the ones in his gov who have miraculously become wealthy in last couple of years, oh forgot to mention his outlawing of opposition partys to, yea the actions on some one who is whiter than white

You don’t like Zelensky much do you? However, still no evidence just you assertion. It is meaningless without evidence and a source as you could just be making this up?dont like beggar boy or putin or hamas or the Israeli goverment to be honest with you there either killing civillians or expecting the rest of the world to supply them arms,as far as the ukies ar concerned its fuck all to do with us, if and when russia attack a nato country then by all means we should get stuck in, until then its not our argument and we should stay the fuck out, personaly i think zelensky is gona swing from a very tall tree at the hands of his milatary and putin will likley see his days out in luxuary,

So happy to see Ukraine fall as a stepping stone even if it then costs the UK 10x the amount if Putin invades a NATO country.

And in the mean time gas and energy will just go up in prise so Russia can build more arms to fight with. And the price of grain , vegetable oils. ETC we depend on Ukraine for quite alot?"

personaly i dont think he will attack a nato country, as for ukraine he will either get what he wants or it will end up destroyed, you may think its in our intrests others dont

They discovered huge gas reserves below Ukraine. Soon after Russia invaded. The West are eyeing the prize as much as Russia. Nothing in life is free. Ukraine will either be taken over by Russia to plunder the gas or be financially beholden to the West who will use the gas to pay off the debt.

You give the West far too much credit if you think they have thought about getting any financial benefit from the situation.

I mean Black Rock may have done but I’m doubtful whether the UK or EU have, beyond hoping that some crumbs fall off the US table.

I think you give too little. Do a little research into what happened in Libya and Iraq and access/contracts to US/UK oil firms. Also look into Haliburton (sp?) and Afghanistan (if it hadn’t gone fubar).

"It's hard to evaluate the 'value' we get from defence spending, but what if Putin prevails in Ukraine? Who next?"

People will evaluate the failure of Russia to take Ukraine, so how would they do taking on the whole of NATO

The greater the cost to the Russian armed forces in personnel and equipment, the greater the chance the Russians will stop at Ukraine. For as long as they choose to wage war, we must try to ensure their casualties mount. They chose to start this war, they have the power to end it. Their lives can be spared if they make it stop.
