Teachers should inform parents if their child wishes to change their gender identity at school, under newly published government guidance.

As they should, and I'm at a loss as to why it takes government intervention to spell out the obvious, which is more than you have quoted.

This is great.

A teacher friends currently has 2 trans kids in 1 class he has to call by their trans names. But call by their real names on parents evening.

Can we bot just go back to kids being mothers and emos when they weren't in tbe cool groups but still wanted attention/?

Because we really must have directives to tell us rest schools should share information with parents.

Ah I see. Other items that were in the guidance have a lot more weight, such as, schools do not have to accept a child's request to socially transition.

Good most of these kids identifying as “trans” are in reality gay, autistic, struggling with growing up, a bit weird, come from broken families or are suffering from other mental health problems or general social contagion.

They need to get proper specialist care which sadly has been lacking in the NHS which has been too focused on some kind of weird conversion therapy masquerading as affirmation in conjunction with ideological trans charities and pressure groups.

Most? And then you give a non-exhaustive list. Probably the only group not listed are those well adjusted children who identify as a different gender.

Personally I'd like to see a move away from labels and allow self discovery without judgement. Make growing up more generic to children than to boy/girl. Children can and do conflate gender identity and sexual orientation, eg I like girls, am I a girl liking girls or am I a boy in a girl's body liking girls.

At the same time we need structure for children to "bounce" off of.

I feel sorry for children growing up in the current gender climate.

Have you seen the backlash that people get when they don’t use preferred pronouns? Now take that imaginary power and give to children who want to be seen as different because they find it hard to fit in, but can now control the way teachers talk or refer to them. Not great being a teacher I would imagine…

Not helped by over zealous parents who long for a trans child, it trumps the gay child on the school run and wine evenings

Exactly it's hard enough dealing with hormones and life in general without the added pressure of " having to identify" as something.

Leave education to the teachers, leave parenting to the parents and let's just leave kid's to be kid's and enjoy themselves before the pressure of life crushes them.

I can't tell if this is a potential issue you are worried about, or is actually happening today.

Transgender is different to sexual orientation. Most of us evolve to understanding these aspects of ourselves without too much grief. Unfortunately children have this stuff foisted upon them through social media. So they start to question themselves and the world around them at younger ages than my generation.

My granddaughter got obsessed with her sexual orientation long before she got interested in the the act. She got obsessed with labelling it rather than evolving/self discovery. I have a daughter who was obsessed with her gender and categorises herself as non-binary/fluid.

I think these issues will increase mental health issues due to crises of identity with young people rather than an encouragement to go on their individual journeys of self discovery.

It's sad.

Without doubt there are some people who for whatever reason are born into the wrong body. Not sure what the percentage is but I suspect it is pretty low. These people will have genuine emotional struggles that the rest of us should view sympathetically.

However, transgender and gender identity etc etc is for many others just the latest fad. When I was growing up the kids who didn’t quite fit in or indeed did not want to fit it went down the path of becoming goths or some other fashion led statement. I think this is a distraction from the genuine former group who are having their real life challenges diluted by the crowd who just want to be different.

Part of childhood/teenage years is discovering yourself and is a journey everyone goes on with greater or lesser impact. But it is quite clear that for many this is just a fad to be “interesting” or “different”.

In society’s scramble to avoid offending anyone we are losing a degree of common sense. However, there is a small number of people for whom this is a genuine issue and they are being lumped in with the fad chasers.

Next we will start seriously entertaining the needs of “furies”!

a few observations from my own childhood.

I was preoccupied with sex like things before I was interested in sex.

I knew I wasn't 100pc straight at a fairly early age. I also nee I wasn't down the middle bi.

I couldn't empathises with relationship models that happened on tv etc

None of this was talked about in any detail at school. I felt very lonely, different and broken.

I have no idea how many of my school mates felt the same. We had one (apparently) out gay kid. But that may have just been bullying. So based on my school years I have no idea what percentage of people are gay, bi, ENM etc.

I found confidence in my identity thru therapy and with things like fab. And I have had lots of conversations with people on similarish boats who have had similarish experiences.

Noone has said we should have talked less about this at school.

How much this translates to gender ID I don't know. However I'm reluctant to have a knee jerk reaction because the adult (and often *very* adult) population has views that may not be fully rounded. After all, we have never been taught anything on this, and probably have done limited reading ourselves. Many of us grew up under section 28, or were already part of the voting public when it came in. I see enough BS here to know that many haven't educated themselves around sexuality so I hold a lot less hope for a newer subject.

Tl:Dr think about your experience of sexuality at school. Was the guidance correct then ? We're you tauggt too much or too little. If not, how can we be sure we are getting it right today.

"Good most of these kids identifying as “trans” are in reality gay, autistic, struggling with growing up, a bit weird, come from broken families or are suffering from other mental health problems or general social contagion.

So do I. You can’t enjoy just being a kid because some weirdo teacher is trying to get you to memorise 257 pronouns.

Imaginary situations with fictional teachers getting kids to memorise 257 pronouns, is definitely one of the big problems facing society in this day and age.

Yes something else that isn’t an issue. Just like immigration isn’t an issue.

Yeah the big four issues facing society are:

The fictional teachers thing.

Foreigners.

Labour.

People who understand Brexit (remoaners)."

Your trying to be funny but you are actually correct if you re word it so you are not being facetious..

1) Factual Truths

2) mass population transfer on a scale never seen.

3) extreme left wing politics / culture war

4) Democracy and accountability forever being funnelled to bigger more distant bodies that are harder to hold to account or change. The WHO, EU being good examples.

"I have a "granddaughter" who is uncertain about her sexual status and has changed her name to a name that can be either male or female, she is happy to be called by her new name or the name she was christened she is nearly 21 but she is receiving a lot of unkindness for her steps brother and sisters but seems to be coping.she knows she can confide in me if she needs to.but this transgender thing is not new you have only to look at people's profile.but thank goodness I don't have this problem, I am straight and happy to be so and before any one asks I have tried lol

It's sad."

So should the NHS stop asking perants when having a scan do you want to know what sex your having? As what we are now saying is the person doing the ultrasound can't realy tell? If they / them are boy or girl. And we should ban cards congratulations it's a ??

Stockport

There is some appalling hatred towards children being spouted in this thread, by people whose only knowledge of gender diversity issues comes from shitwipe tabloid newspapers. The governments own lawyers have advised that Badenoch's new "guidelines" are almost certainly illegal, and that any schools following these guidelines are going to lose when they are sued for the damage caused to transgender children. Badenoch is a vicious transphobic witch who is getting her rocks off through attacking one of the most vulnerable groups in society. There is nothing constructive in this new "guidance", it is calculated to cause pain.

Eighty years ago my father was viscously beaten by his teachers because he wrote with his left hand. In years to come we will be just as repulsed by the attitudes of Badenoch and her ilk, as we are now by the idea of physically punishing children for being left handed.

Seems pretty fair to me after reading the guidance

Reminder that the NHS and GID are extremely neutral on handling young child’s social transitioning

Even GIDS say that socially transitioning isn’t a good or a bad thing for under 13 and that it’s up to the parents

Teachers won’t be getting in trouble for using the wrong pronouns as unless the child has seen a doctor and started to transition with a medical professional guidance then they won’t fall under any protection granted by the EA

All this focus and attention on a very very small percentage of the population and an even smaller amount of young people must be having a negative effect on children who have other issues, issues that are not in the limelight and not trendy!

Probably this

Although I don’t disagree. The guidance is partially aimed at young children under 11

I don’t know why we think a child under 11 that can’t decide what they want for dinner is able to know they are ready to socially transition

Why don’t we look towards doctors and experts?

Because these topics are always full of 2 groups

Group 1 : no one should ever be able to trans and thus guidance isn’t enough

Group 2 : babies can decide to have HRT and a sex change surgery and this guidance is literally the holocaust x10

Both groups are extremists and neither want to know what the doctors say, they just want to push their own extremism on others

I think your attitude is partly to blame here and why guidelines are needed, and in general things are starting change.

You expect a child to be allowed to go unchallenged into decisions that could ruin their lives forever, should they take drugs or under go operations at a time in their life they are struggling to simply fit in.

Your belief outweighs the protection of vulnerable children, and I will call them vulnerable because they are easily influenced and striving to find their own identity as a normal child growing up.

Tavistock is closing down, courts expressed concerns and people are aware of this, even though it has been well managed to minimise the message impact.

There will be some children that will be genuine in their need to transition, they should receive the support they deserve, but equally there are many that are inquisitive only, and they too need to be given the support they need, and not be pushed into life changing mistakes

I looked for the guidance when it was on the news but couldn't find it.

I'm shocked it's for under 11s.

"As they should, and I'm at a loss as to why it takes government intervention to spell out the obvious, which is more than you have quoted.

I quoted the title of the article.

Ah I see. Other items that were in the guidance have a lot more weight, such as, schools do not have to accept a child's request to socially transition.was being forced to ever on the cards ?

I've not looked at the detail, but at least there now is guidance. That's a good start.

Have you seen the backlash that people get when they don’t use preferred pronouns? Now take that imaginary power and give to children who want to be seen as different because they find it hard to fit in, but can now control the way teachers talk or refer to them. Not great being a teacher I would imagine…

Not helped by over zealous parents who long for a trans child, it trumps the gay child on the school run and wine evenings"

Read the guidance first

People online are specifically being vague to make it sound worse than it is

No parents will be informed if there is a safeguarding issue, nothings changed there

Parents won’t be informed about just general chat either, only serious talk about actionable transitioning

I looked for the guidance when it was on the news but couldn't find it.

Also, remember, this is guidance, not law. No teachers will get in trouble for not following this or using it on a case to case basis

Many pro-trans people are doing their best to make it sound worse than it really is

This guidance was made with the help of the governments equality hub, they are extremely pro LGBT

"Teachers should inform parents if their child wishes to change their gender identity at school, under newly published government guidance.

BBC

Pretty sick for kids in an abusive family environment.

Read the guidance first

People online are specifically being vague to make it sound worse than it is

No parents will be informed if there is a safeguarding issue, nothings changed there

Parents won’t be informed about just general chat either, only serious talk about actionable transitioning

How will they know the smiley parents are homophobic arseholes.

Fair point though. "

How would they know the parents won’t abuse their child for failing a test too?

We can’t just assume every parent is abusive and hide everything from them. It’s a case by case basis

I'll read later, thanks.

I'm pro supportive childhood. My granddaughter got through her "I'm this!" times because her mum and I are open minded. Mum and her clashed but she'd listen to the same message from me, which was succinctly to explore without labels.

Looks like the “Blob” has been at it again.

Bit unusual for this to not be legal Kemi is probably one of the rare MPs who is normally on top of their brief whatever people think of her. If it’s open to legal issues then I suspect a long road ahead.

poor quoting on my part. Thanks to you for the link (I was relying on finding the right bbc article)

Question was at whoever was shocked. Guidance says they should continue to use the sex-based pronouns while in primary. Sounds sensible.

Me! I was shocked at under 11s needing guidance, not the actual guidance.

fair enough. I took it as read guidance was needed in one form or another, as otherwise there would be a gap, so missread your shock.

From what I've read, the guidance looks to be common sense. The challenge will be in practice where someone disagrees that a child may or may not be risk if including the parents. Imo, if there is a risk here, there's likely a wider safeguarding risk.

My biggest issue with some of the people very against this is that they are worried outing a child could open them up to abuse

Their solution to that is that we shouldn’t be outing children

The problem there is that if a teacher think there’s enough of a risk, the answer isn’t just to not say anything. It’s to contact social services and have that child protected

Saying nothing in the face of a safeguarding issue is how children get hurt.

Saying nothing opens up the possibility that the parents find out some other way and the child is in danger

It’s feel gross to me, but most of the people really against this guidance seem to be hiding behind “we need to protests the kids” to push their “transition at any age” agenda, even if that means children keeping secrets with teachers, away from parents

It’s kinda gross, because it’s exactly what the far right hide behind.

Truly, both sides are as bad as each other.

In healthcare and education, safeguarding is mandatory, as is relevant training.

there will be extremes at either end. Whatever grain of truth they are hiding should be extracted and the rest ignored.

I always fear that the semi extremes (for want of a better term) on either side point to the extremes as why a policy etc is bad. That breaks down discourse between those who have strong views but ones that should be listened to. It also tends to undermine those with semi extreme views as they go raging against the bogeyman and seemingly start strawman wars.

I agree that any concerns about safeguarding is wider. And I'd say that this guidance does nothing to help manage the concerns you have raised. It's dealt with the 99pf of cases that could be dealt via common sense (and probably were) and has left teachers in the dark about the tricky case that everyone understandably cares about.

Imo the guidance has added nothing other than writing down what was probably happening in most cases.

You don't have to use their preferred pronouns, but can.

Engage the parents unless a safeguarding risk.

They need to continue to use their sex toilets etc, unless they have concerns, in which case look for alternatives. They cant use the opposite sex toilets etc.

(And tbh it's that latter bit that's useful to see and practical. But everyone gets worked up in pronouns.)

"There is some appalling hatred towards children being spouted in this thread, by people whose only knowledge of gender diversity issues comes from shitwipe tabloid newspapers.

In years to come we will be just as repulsed by the attitudes of Badenoch and her ilk, as we are now by the idea of physically punishing children for being left handed."

The only hateful post I've seen on this thread is yours and the language you have used to describe a woman who has dared to speak out.

"Good most of these kids identifying as “trans” are in reality gay, autistic, struggling with growing up, a bit weird, come from broken families or are suffering from other mental health problems or general social contagion.

Foreigners.

Labour.

People who understand Brexit (remoaners).

It's getting harder to tell which posts are satirical or not.

It's getting harder to tell which men are women, which women are men and so on, nevermind keeping up with how you're expected to address someone without causing offence most of the time you address someone you use their name or you/your.

Not anymore you're meeting different people to me. The only people I know who third person are the Rock and Essex Tom.

Next suggestion: ask.

When I bump I to a 6ft plus beared fellow in a dress, I've no idea what to say but it's a given it's wrong.

Does this scenario happen so often that it's becoming a problem for you?"

Variations, yes

"Good most of these kids identifying as “trans” are in reality gay, autistic, struggling with growing up, a bit weird, come from broken families or are suffering from other mental health problems or general social contagion.

So do I. You can’t enjoy just being a kid because some weirdo teacher is trying to get you to memorise 257 pronouns.

Imaginary situations with fictional teachers getting kids to memorise 257 pronouns, is definitely one of the big problems facing society in this day and age.

It isn't for anyone to "out" someone to anyone. Certainly not to folks that may pose a danger, or may make a young person homeless or subject to violence.

Let's flip it and have someone present your bosses and Co workers with your online pictures, your swinging shenanigans and what you get upto when not in their presence. That revelation could be DEVASTATING to your careers. It shouldn't, but it could. At the very least you'd be in danger of ridicule and scorn.

Outing a child would have to be done extremely carefully. You just don't know the repercussions of that action. You'll someday get a kid murdered by ultra religious or homophobic/transohobic parents. Or if not murdered, put into intensive care.

The kids need to be able to trust an adult figure. If the kid hasn't come out to the parents, maybe there's a very very good reason for that!

Schools have a duty to inform

the parents of a child who wants to change gender identity or pronouns.

Schools do not have to accept the wishes of such children.

Information may only be withheld in cases we're tge school considers the child may be at risk of significant harm if information is provided to parents.

Why do u say there us a duty on schools to do so. These are places to educate children.

In a case currently in Ireland a teacher refused to call a child by their chosen pronoun. The school took action and the teacher was jailed in a complex case. People have not been vocal. Many are privately saying they support the stance of the teacher. The family of the teacher have caused issue beyond thus and sympathy us not with them overall. The teacher held the brief that gender of boy and girl, he and she was what he considered correct. It's madness

Under which law?"

I'm going to have to change what I've said here. It's a duty to follow non statutory guidance following the Cass review. So the position is that schools should only withhold telling parents in case we're they consider the child may suffer significant harm if the parents were told. Also the guidance does not say schools should have to use preferred pronouns and this is based upon a number of factors including not forcing teachers to go against their own beliefs to accommodate the child and it states that this is because it may breach the Equality Act and open up schools to being sued.

So schools have a duty, following this latest guidance under the Cass Review to inform parents of their children's wish to transition.

Choose the path of least resistance - don't ever call the child by a pronoun but by their name.

Gender does not have to be the issue people claim it is - it's a word or two, no life altering decisions at this stage. And the child may, rightfully, choose to be as their biological self.

It's a tiny issue really, the whole area of transexuality. Now before I get the obvious pelters from people it obviously affects and their virtue signalling followers, I'm not saying it isn't a real issue for anyone who goes through transition, it obviously is and it must be difficult being born and not identifying the same way as your assigned gender at birth.

However in the 2022 census, the question was asked of the population of over 16yr old, how many identified as their assigned birth gender. Of over 54 million responses, almost all said they still identified as being the same as their birth gender.

Only roughly 250,000 said they didn't. That's about 0.5% of the population of the UK.

So it's not as big an issue as people seem to think it is.

I'm not so sure it does, think nature plays a much bigger role developmentally than nurture.

Think it might be an issue with virtue signalling teens trying to come across as progressive and anti establishment. But in the main I think your born with these issues.

Same census, in the age group 16-24, it was 1% of the population that identified as trans. Potentially in future generations there will be higher numbers of trans men and women.

Same census, in the age group 16-24, it was 1% of the population that identified as trans. Potentially in future generations there will be higher numbers of trans men and women. Or potentially it may be less.

But say it doubles, 98% would still identify asthe birth gender, still not a huge issue.

Mrs x"

It's probably underestimated - still a lot of prejudice which is a barrier to people being open about their trans status, gender identity and sexual orientation. I can only see the numbers increasing. Not an issue for me, as I've said on other threads, a trans man is a man and a trans woman is a woman.

"Schools have a duty to inform

the parents of a child who wants to change gender identity or pronouns.

Schools do not have to accept the wishes of such children.

Information may only be withheld in cases we're tge school considers the child may be at risk of significant harm if information is provided to parents.

Mrs x

Why do u say there us a duty on schools to do so. These are places to educate children.

In a case currently in Ireland a teacher refused to call a child by their chosen pronoun. The school took action and the teacher was jailed in a complex case. People have not been vocal. Many are privately saying they support the stance of the teacher. The family of the teacher have caused issue beyond thus and sympathy us not with them overall. The teacher held the brief that gender of boy and girl, he and she was what he considered correct. It's madness

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, Mrs x

"Good most of these kids identifying as “trans” are in reality gay, autistic, struggling with growing up, a bit weird, come from broken families or are suffering from other mental health problems or general social contagion.

Foreigners.

Labour.

People who understand Brexit (remoaners).

Ah yes Brexit. You realise it’s almost 2024 right? Or is it still June 2016 in the Remoan Fuhrerbunker?

That's right. Not only should we ignore any impact Brexit has had. We should logon to swingers forums and hound anyone who dares to discuss the topic.

Those remoaner scum really are as bad or worse than the fictional teachers you mentioned. "

Any perceived changes that could have been made possible by leaving the EU, such as reclaiming British waters for British fishermen, went out of the window due to remainders in parliament refusing to implicate them.

Those who were against BREXIT from the very beginning, and are still banging on about it today are accurately described as REMOANERS.
