Pontins Prestatyn closes

Why has Pontins suddenly announced the immediate closure of their holiday site at Prestatyn, North Wales?

Now I always like to look for the positives in any situation.

Maybe the site has been block booked to house workers for the planned off shore windfarm which has recently been given the go ahead?

Or maybe the site has been block booked by our loverly government people to give the local houseless and homeless peoples somewhere warm and comfortable for the winter period?

Of course, Pontins do like to upsell their offering. Pontins do like to describe the accommodation as "self catering apartments" rather than "chalets".

And of course, the Pontins "apartments" do have easy access to the nearest beach and sea (a gentle 4 minute walk).

This place has 820 "apartments", complete with bathrooms and kitchen facilities, many able to accommodate families or 4 people in each "apartment".

Hmmm......

Well Rwanda plan didn't work, maybe Wales is a more viable option?

They are also closing Pontins Camber Sands.

Pontins is owned by Britania Hotels, constantly voted the worst

operator in the UK. Maybe the avalanche of bad reviews has caught up with them!

Possibly because it's a dive no one should ever go to.

The local mp is puzzled so if it was a closure for migrants I'm not sure why the local mp wouldn't be informed

Yes this, North Wales is home and pontins always had a dire reputation there.

"People fly abroad for holidays for sunshine"

It's cheaper to get a flight to the canaries than a train to Wales and driving at 20mph you'd have to turn round to go home as soon as you arrive lol

The prices of uk holiday are crazy.

I fancied a week in Cornwall last time I looked and realised I could get 2 weeks in Monte Negro cheaper and I’d spend less on food and stuff over those two weeks than I would on 1 week in Cornwall.

It was the same in 2011 when I graduated.

We went to Cornwall for 4 days and realised we could have gone tk Egypt for 10 days all inclusive for the same amount.

Haven't things changed.

Back when I was at uni we used to make airline tours on the budget airlines.

Set a budget each, say £20 and see how many places we can go in a weekend.

Sometimes not even having time to step out of the airport because of the the interconnecting flight.

Doubt students these days will be doing that.

Have you ever actually seen prestatyn pontins?....believe me if you have, surely you'd know why it's closed. I'm not even exaggerating it looks like a prison.

I agree that it's a dive and indeed, there is a certain whiff in the atmosphere around the place. However, the same can be said for every other Pontins Camp and Britannia Hotel.

The local MP was a bit dismissive and suggested that it had been sold for development / housing.

However, although it would make a huge housing estate, surely wouldn't the local MP have a bit of a heads up about it?

Bizarrely, Pontins have said people are welcome to make offers for the site, but in the same breath, Pontins have also stated that they will not negotiate at present.

It’s a shame, we went to Pontins in Prestatyn loads when the family was younger. A Mon-Fri break for £49, what is there to complain about! Ok yeah we would clean our own apartment before unpacking but what do you expect for £4.10 per person per night. The entertainment was also always fantastic and I can honesty say we never had one of those terrible apartments you see in the media. We have never stayed in Southport but we regularly go to watch the evening entertainment (we was there last night).

Realistically, a holiday at Pontins is all some families can afford, now there will be loads of kids who won’t be getting a summer holiday which I think is sad.

It always amazes me how many people slag Pontins off, but how many have been?

"

Good answer.

In my case, yes I've been. Yes I do live close and yes, I do travel past most days.

I've also stayed at several of the hotels owned by the parent company, Britannia. Including Manchester, Liverpool, Coventry, Folkestone and even Market Bosworth.

It is because of my more recent experiences that I slag Pontins off. And I feel confident enough to state that Fred Pontin would turn in his grave if he knew.

It is what it is. A holiday camp. The profits are based on numbers. If I owned the site, then the first thing I would do would be to reintroduce the £49 break.

I've never been to a Pontins but if they're anything like the Britannia hotels in my town, I never will be going.

I personally would avoid Britain's at all costs.

Yeah Britannia. My autocorrect obviously knows how dreadful they are and doesn't like writing it

Never stayed in a Britannia Hotel but have been privileged to a tour around the 1st floor of The Aldelphi in Liverpool by a very friendly maid. OK she cherry picked the best rooms and we stayed on the first floor (as previously said) but WOW! If the first floor was anything to go by, I don’t understand why it gets such bad press.

When we get hotels, we normally stick with Premier Inn.
