"C'mon, seriously? How about parents do a bit of parenting????"

Public Health England proposed this a while back.

I assume you're talking about Starmers recent suggestion? Seems like he's reached the bottom of the barrel.

Ffs! Parents are totally childish themselves in some cases.

Brushing teeth is such a basic that all children coming in to school with dirty teeth should be reported to social services as a neglect case. That’s what teachers should be doing!!

While parents should teach their kids how to brush their teeth, it isn't something that always happens unfortunately. I think any reinforcement for kids who do know is good, and its even better for the kids where weren't fortunate enough to be shown. Just because something should be done doesn't always mean it is. I view it as a plus that their teaching it in schools.

To be fair we had this in the 90s, a couple times a year someone would come and get you to swill a purple liquid round your mouth and then show off the plaque with a uv light, then they would show everyone the best way to brush

Back in the 70s we were given 'disclosing tablets' to chew, which showed up bacterial matter as a purple stain on your teeth. Then we were all given tooth brushes and shown how to use them.

This doesn't seem like a new thing.

Kids of 5 are turning up for school not even toilet trained. Parenting skills are dire.

It isn't new. We were given the purple tablets also, to test is to see if we were adjusting to the new technique.

To be fair, most adults make lot of brushing mistakes themselves. I did a few mistakes myself and had to go through some painful dentist visits to fix them. So I don't see any problem with teaching it to kids. I just hope they plan to spend so much money on it.

I have no problems with it being taught to kids...by the blxxdy parents!!!! Look up the definition of parenting...it doesn't say pass the responsibility onto everyone else

Oops. I missed an important word there. I hope they *don't* plan to spend so much money on it. This could be a simple chapter in any of the classes.

Ok. So it would be brilliant if they had teeth brushing lessons that both parents and children have to attend. However this should be taught by special tutors, not poor teachers that already have enough on their plate.

However this would be very detrimental to the profits of toothpaste manufacturers, mouthwash suppliers etc that there’s no way it will ever be funded.

It’s still not teachers’ responsibility to teach children such a basic thing as how to brush children’s teeth! They are employed to teach the stuff parents for the most part cannot, like history, geography, maths, science, literature, religions, languages etc.

Maybe they should concentrate on teeth brushing instead. Way to go on further dumbing down on society!

No surprise that teachers have to do the basics when it comes to parents. Parents see school as nothing more than cheap baby sitting. Some parents have no idea how to parent their kids. Others have no interest.

Teeth cleaning may sound basic but, in my opinion worse still, almost 1 in 5 children start school without the speech necessary to learn. Bad parenting and using TV and mobiles as pacifiers.

Family skills should be on the curriculum. Get past beans on toast and how many can cook even?

I remember being at primary school, yes a LONG time ago lol and getting shown how to clean our teeth, we were all given little tooth brushes and toothpaste. I can assure you that my mum wasnt too busy talking on the phone or working or any other of the things mentioned. It was just part of schooling I guess, I dont see what the big deal is tbh.

I suspect many here dony have great teeth. And many here have been told (when adults) they aren't brushing their teeth well enough.

So.its plausible kids are being taught by parents, but taught badly. Because they were taught badly. Why not look at breaking the cycle?

Likewise eating habits.

And relationship skills.

I remember my parents showing me how to brush my teeth.

It was my dad actually 'son! If you don't brush your teeth twice a day I'll knock them out for you'

Our dentist's said that 7 year old's don't have the dexterity to brush properly. Our older I think managed at that age, but our younger is having difficulty. Extra assistance is gratefully appreciated.

Plus, it takes a village to raise a child! Sometimes, they listen to us and rebel against their teachers; sometimes (I think more often) it's the opposite. Parents and schools, and other institutions, must work together to help us raise decent children, with healthy teeth and gums!

I remember someone coming in to tell us about brushing our teeth when I was in school. It would have been about 1990.

I don't really see the big deal. If it's helpful for even one child who doesn't have great parents, then it's worthwhile.
