I’ve voted for lots of different parties over the years - mostly because I try to pick people with a genuine connection with the area I live, and an interest in local issues rather than the right colour rosette. If I’d based my vote on hotness, I’d have been abstaining a lot in this constituency

In Denis Healey's autobiography he talks of refusing to join in the idea that everyone whose politics disagree with yours is somehow scum. He fought alongside Tories in World War Two (he was a beach commander for the Italian landings) and spoke of how some of the men he fought alongside then became politicians he disagreed with. In the war he found them decent honourable brave people who were trying to do the right thing; he wasn't prepared to write them off in peacetime because he disagreed with them about politics.

The SNP landslide after the indyref was a breath of fresh air, to be honest. And I’m an Englishman saying that. Having a realistic choice that wasn’t Tory or Labour and hundreds of new people coming into politics from ‘normal’ careers and backgrounds instead of the standard careerist types … those were a really positive few years.
