Road Tax - a sneaky ploy?

Here ...

Hi,

Lots of cars getting clamped around here in the last week or so better watch out.

Then for some reason I jumped out of bed this morning and checked mine and realised it expired on the 1st of this month. Immediately went online and taxed the car so all good now.

I've not received a reminder via the post or email ... so is this a sneaky ploy to generate more revenue ??

I work in the motor industry and I know alot of ppl are not getting reminders anymore and getting their car clamped.

The direct debit is only for 1yr..some ppl think its forever and just keeps on running every year

There is the age old tactic of putting your own reminder on a calendar.

Google does one that will link to your smartphone.

You could even make your own "tax disc" and stick a date on a piece of paper on your windscreen.

Rather than this all being a ploy by the government, look at it as taking responsibility for your own financial affairs.

Yes and a government department should not exclude those people and should also remember that those of us that use online services do so on an entirely voluntary basis.

Nope. Our direct debits are taken every year for each vehicle. It is perpetual until you sell the vehicle or cancel it.

Can't see what the problem is, get a vehicle then set up the direct debit straight away. Problem solved.

As to whether it is value for money given the state of the roads, well that's another question.

I checked and I didn't get a reminder at all.

I've set a reminder now but will probably replace the car before it's due as it will be 3 year old soon.

You have a mobile? Put it in the Calandar with a reminder and/or go on line to the DVLA and check.

It's very unfair that it costs more (overall) when you pay a monthly direct debit, thank if you can afford to pay it all in one go.

People say ‘lots of old people don’t use mobile phones and emails’ - is there evidence to back it up?

My folks are 71 and 70, not very computer literate at all, but can still manage emails.

Think they should bin it and put onto fuel duty. Will save a load of admin and low mileage/ fuel efficient owners will benefit. The heavier road users and gas guzzlers will pay more.

That has been an argument for years But EV now Fu*ks that up as heavy and do more damage to the roads look at the waight of a Toyota rav 4 diesel and an all electric it's about a third again.

I can't understand why people still think that we pay a Road Tax. That was abolished in 1937, well before any of us were born, let alone driving. Instead we pay a vehicle tax, and the money raised goes to central funds, it's not spent on roads.

I'm sure there's lots of similar cases.

Could always mark the date on a calendar when you need to pay it by. Then you don't have to rely on a letter.
