"Should MPs be obliged to attend Parliament or hold local surgeries. Asking this following lots of reports of Nadine Dorres has reportedly not had a local surgery for over 3 years. Also apparently not been active in Parliament for a while. In the meantime hosting a weekly show on GB news and writing books." . If anyone experienced difficulty contacting her the the local parry could do so on her behalf . Do any of her constituents object to her broadcasting regularly. ? Maybe they appreciate her proactive approach and the fact that she is openly discussing topics on their behalf

"It is scandalous how she is allowed to abandon her constituents. " And yet one of the arguments in favour of FPTP is constituency representation (ignoring that MPs are required to vote in Parliament in line with the whip).

Increase their salaries but require 100% focus on their role as MP. Ironically Nads spent longer “resigning with immediate effect” than Lizzie spent as Prime Minister

Yeah her constituents and local council are really peeved with her antics, she doesn’t even live there either preferring to stay in her pad in the Cotswolds. She has totally checked out mentally and physically. They should sanction her, but can the PM afford another bruising defeat?

"This has been a much discussed topic but I defo think reform is needed. I think an MP should have lived in their constituency for two years before being put forward for election. They should then be required to actually live in their constituency for the duration of the time they are an MP (excepting Parly business and trips). Then as Feisty says, be required to hold a minimum number of local surgeries." . What matters is what her constituents think of her . That is the only result that counts and a true reflection of public opinion. At the last election she won 38,936 votes or 61 % of the total vote . It looks like the electorate are more than happy with her. Only people with exceptional talent would appear regularly on a news channel. She is doing exactly what voters would expect and proactively expressing her opinions on her constituents behalf . Whether of not he hold constituency meetings is irrelevant. The are other means of contacting her

Your statement can only be tested if Nads went independent and was still voted in. She was in a safe Tory seat nothing more.

I do see the point they make in it creating some impasse. My idea probably makes that even worse but what we get currently is party voting, I'd hazard a guess that very few actually vote for their MP.

But there are conflicts on what you can attend in Parliament and what you can do in your constituency. This is why they have expenses. So that the surgeries can be held by their admin staffor letters read etc and info passed on.

Represent the people in the area you live. Stops crap mps being dropped into safe seats

"MPs are elected to represent the people of their constituency. I fail to see how that works if she never sees them or attends parliament. If it was a normal job she would be sacked. However, for the Conservatives it is always party over people. Sad thing is they could put up a sheep with a blue rosette in her constituency and it would be voted in. " It's definitely not just the Tories who are 'party over people'

" Attendance at Parliament or in select committees would trump constituency surgeries. Nothing else should. Becomes difficult when appointed to Ministerial position though as time constraints change exponentially. Perhaps Ministers should have deputy MPs to cover their constituency business?

"Pat, you are talking about how her constituents felt in December 2019. How do you know they would all vote for her again ?" . As she is not seeking re election none of us will ever know. We will all face reality at the next election. Everything in between is irrelevant

True but that again undermines the myth of representing constituents, one of the key arguments for FPTP and against PR. Technically constituents can demand a recall to trigger a by-election but I believe only in cases of legality/crime and such (and even then I think it needs a large majority). Perhaps that should be extended?
