Russian propaganda

I've spent the last week in a Turkish hotel.

About 60% of the guests are Russian. About 35% Turkish. And the rest a mix of nationalities, a few British people among them.

(Another 110% of the guests are Biden and Remain voters, but that's for another thread).

After being subjected to fourteen months of vitriolic anti-Russian propaganda, I've been surprised that the Russians don't have red eyes, horns, and a tail.

In fact they behave similarly to the British, drinking beer and cocktails, enjoying the food and sun, laughing with friends and family.

It's made me wonder to what extent we are being brainwashed, particularly about Russia and Ukraine.

Is Tucker Carlson right (to plagiarise slightly), does the average Azerbaijani peasant now know more about what's going on in the world than the average UK, EU, or US citizen?

Are we being brainwashed about the Russian people, I've always found them a rather same mix of nice, nasty and right old arseholes just like us.

The Russian regime is in the headlights not the people.

To be fair though, even when British soldiers were murdering innocent civilians in Ballymurphy and the Bogside, I always found English people to be among the nicest in the world.

People are not their government, or their military.

I'd agree with that ....I've always found English people to be very nice.

The English state mind you would burn children to keep power.

Anno controversial

Not sure where you are getting your propaganda from OP but I haven't seen or heard anything which is anti Russian people. I find people around the world are generally nice. International conflicts tend to be out of the control of everyday people.

A week on holiday in Turkey and you now think everyone has got nthe Russians wrong? That’s hilarious.

People are people and in every nationality and race there are good, bad and in-betweeners.

What you have not seen is the daily digest of propaganda that is fed to Russian from their first day at school and thereafter every day of their lives. People moan and complain about Western MSM but at least here we have choices about what to believe.

How do I know?…

Mrs H was born in Russia and spent the first 32 years of her life there.

Absolutely right. The ordinary population starting a war is like turkeys voting for Xmas. It's the politicians, dictators and sometimes the military heads who start the fights.

Putin was elected by 78% of Russians who were fully aware of his nationalist policies and belligerence. No doubt Western media does spin news to an extent, but I doubt it comes even close to the propaganda BS fed to Russians.

There are another of Russians there atm because it's k tbe kf the few countries around d Europe that hasn't barred them entering the country and placing sanctions on them. They can still dock their yachts etc there and spend their cash.

I dont believe every Russian is evil. Just like I don't believe every German was a nazi in the 40s

Sadly we have quote a bigoted view of Russians in the uk. Especially around brexit. Where even those who reli quashed their Russian citizenship and have been uk citizens for 10 /20 years are being labelled the enemy and Russian state funders of tories.

All it does it show people as bigots.

Who criticises the Russian population?

There is certainly very strong anti-Putin reporting. Is that propaganda. Is this the state dictating what the press says or is it the press choosing to report with this slant or bias?

Russian news is, however, very definitely propaganda. Nearly all channels are state controlled and edited with the few independent ones being shut down and journalists and owners arrested and prosecuted.

This begs the question, to what extent are you being brainwashed by one individual, Tucker Carlson?

Reporters Without Borders? The Committee to Protect Journalists? The Press Freedom Index? Russian court records and televised trials?

What sources claim that Russia has a free press?

Nah, I’ll stick with the line in the sand that the Russian citizens are just as complicit in this war as their Government.

They’re all in this together, supporting the murder, destruction & invasion of a country that did nothing to them.

I hope that the Ukrainian victory comes soon, and with it the dissolution of the Russian Federation.
