The Brexiteers will surely spin the Atlantic declaration as a fully fledged trade deal and talk up the benefits of Brexit.

Let's face it they need something. It's gone beyond embarrassing at this stage.

Spin it brexiteers!

Biden probably just thought he was speaking to the Indian Prime Minister.

Or the waiter was being a bit pushy.

At least he didn't fall over I suppose.

Nope. It's not an fta.

Got any proof any brexiteers are trying to do that?

Brexiteers are smart enough to read and know what an fta is.

Lots of committees and working groups.

British defence companies being treated as domestic US ones? Although many of them already have dispensation.

UK minerals used in EVs not treated as "foreign" could be significant.

Not sure there's much else substatntive.

Really it's a reward for the Windsor Framework being agreed.

It's certainly positive rather than negative.

It sounds a pretty hollow deal, more for PR than anything else. The defence content serves US interests more than the UK. The absence of a trade deal shows the Biden administration has no interest in closer US-UK trade ties. Perversely, UK interests would be far better served under a Trump administration.

Biden believes that he's Irish, and therefore he hates the British, going so far as to refuse to speak to the BBC. There was never any prospect of getting a trade deal while Biden was president.

Reading the news closely it's clear that the things announced aren't actually deals, they're just commitments to consider deals. Even then, I'm amazed that Sunak managed to get anything at all.

Other than that, yes, mainly just talking about agreements. They have made a big thing of it to pay Sunak on the head for the Windsor Framework deal with the EU.

It, at least sets a positive tone and we need major allies as the world starts to fragment again and great powers geopolitics gets more belligerent. We are not one of those great powers anymore.

""Hates" the British seems rather strong."

Possibly, but what word better describes the sort of animosity that drives a man to put his own job at risk, just to get back at a country that oppressed his distant ancestors?

"What has he done to actively harm the UK?"

It could be said that his meddling in Northern Ireland affairs has harmed Britain. But I agree that he hasn't actually set out to overtly punish the UK. Having said that, I think it's possible to hate someone without attempting to actively harm them.

But we agree that this announcement is good to hear, but it doesn't really amount to anything. Watching the press conference last night it was clear to me that the White House is no longer attempting to hide Biden's frailty, and I don't expect that he'll be in position for very much longer. Let's hope the next incumbent will be more amenable to trade talks.

How did Biden "put his own job at risk".

What did he do to "get back at us"?

Biden's public sharpness does not look great, but he seems to be actually achieving some pretty big things. Could he do continue over another term is another question.

I don't think that the US is particularly interested in any trade deals. The focus is on containing China and Russia and building coalitions.

Nothing will happen in trade except on their own terms which will certainly mean an even big hammering of our agriculture and food sectors and likely healthcare.

"How did Biden "put his own job at risk"."

There are lots of voters in the US, and lots of members of the Democratic Party that are very unhappy at Biden's stance. Trade deals are always good for both sides, and his refusal to even start talks isn't helping the US to increase its exports. It's made worse by the fact that he keeps bringing up Ireland in all discussions that involve the UK. Lots of people are wondering why they should vote for a man that seems to be more interested in improving Ireland rather than improving the US.

"What did he do to "get back at us"?"

As I've said, stopping trade negotiations, and insisting on interfering in negotiations in Northern Ireland.

Scranton is a Irish stronghold Biden never liked the Brits. If he caved on trade talks that county in a swing state would put his reelection in jeopardy. He is following his Irish heritage. It's not rocket science to figure that out.

Biden never misses an opportunity to display his anti-Britishness. Odd from a man with an English name and English lineage. But then he is a distinctly odd man all round. The Democrats generally are more anti-British than the Republicans. Both Biden and Pelosi have stirred up trouble in N.Ireland. I feel saddened that we are forced into supporting Trump in our national interest. "None of our business" you might say. Possibly, but the US never fails to stick their noses into our business.

This sounds a bit of politicians just playing politics.

In the end does any of what was announced improve things or make things worse or no change?

If no change, then it was a waste of time, if worse then a waste of time and failure, if improvement then that's good.

"The absence of a trade deal shows the Biden administration has no interest in closer US-UK trade ties.

"Hates" the British seems rather strong. What has he done to actively harm the UK?

Other than that, yes, mainly just talking about agreements. They have made a big thing of it to pay Sunak on the head for the Windsor Framework deal with the EU.

It, at least sets a positive tone and we need major allies as the world starts to fragment again and great powers geopolitics gets more belligerent. We are not one of those great powers anymore.

Possibly, but the US never fails to stick their noses into our business."

What has he said and done that is "anti-British"?

The US "sticks their noses" into everyone's business. So do Russia and China, don't they?

"How did Biden "put his own job at risk".

What did he do to "get back at us"?

As I've said, stopping trade negotiations, and insisting on interfering in negotiations in Northern Ireland.

Biden's public sharpness does not look great, but he seems to be actually achieving some pretty big things.

I don't want to argue on this point, but what do you see as a big thing that Biden has achieved?"

"Lots" are "unhappy". Really? How many "lots" and how "unhappy"?

Trade deals are not always good for both sides.

Our trade deal with New Zealand was calculated as being negative for us on GDP. They tend to favour the larger economy (except in our case) due to their relative negotiating position.

From a US perspective, it would be rational to consider the EU a more significant ally than the UK and position themselves appropriately. Domestically there is also more value in articulating that as taking the part of Ireland and it plays well in general to take the part of the smaller nation.

"Regardless of that, how does someone saying that their Irish mean that they hate the British?"

Just to make this clear, I'm not saying that all, or even most, Irish people hate the British. What I'm saying is that a small group of Americans like to believe that they're directly descended from Irish stock, and that this makes them superior to others. Those people mythologise the Irish, and part of that is hating the British for things that happened to their ancestors. Biden's behaviour makes it clear that he is in that group of people.

I'll let people watch the clip of him being asked a question by the BBC, and they can draw their own conclusions as to whether I'm right or not.

So no indication that "lots of people" in the UD have any negative views on Biden's position on the UK. So no indication that he has "put his own job at risk".

He has done nothing to "get back at us".

He has "meddled in Northern Ireland" in the same way that countless US Presidents have (including arbitrating the Good Friday Agreement) but is just as easily viewed as prioritising the US relationship with the EU over that of the UK.

He replied to a request for a question from the BBC by saying that his Irish, which sounds more like he's just dodging a question when you watch the video. There is nothing except opinion here unless you can provide more context as to the news item that Boden was most likely to be asked about at the time.

I see no indication yet of any "hate" or even substantial bias. It looks more like a downgrading of the utility of the UK to the USA. Realpolitik.

You are expressing an opinion and an emotional reaction to perceived behaviour but there is no grounding in fact as far as I can see.

From CityAM so very pro-business:

I assume this survey would have been advance of this announcement, but unclear. Could have been online yesterday. Not a big survey either, but by Bain & Co, so not likely to be inconsequential companies.

"Of the 79 companies surveyed, which do business in both countries, three quarters said the repercussions of the UK’s exit from the European Union was one of their top three concerns.

Other problems US respondents cited included the upcoming increase in corporate tax, stagnant economic growth and a rocky political landscape in the UK."

https://www.cityam.com/brexit-cited-as-major-concern-as-us-business-confidence-in-britain-drops/

A FTA may not have moved the dial that much anyway under those circumstances.
