Leftys and woke people

Reading a lot of discussions that mention about people being 'woke' or 'lefties' being a problem. Apparently they have broken the police, the education system, democracy and many many other things.

My problem with this is we have had a Conservative right wing party in control for years, with a majority government for a lot of that. How can it be that the ruling party...the people who can affect these issues has their hands tied by woke and lefty people. They are the ones who can and do dispense laws. Are they possibly using these phrases to deflect from their own failures? BTW I ain't lefty and far far from woke, but I do think about what I see and read.

As someone who quite happily identifies as a woke lefty, a stance I broadly define as “not being a dick”, I’m not sure quite how I am responsible for the people I didn’t vote for doing (or not doing) the things that they do, but I’m glad that my intangible influence is apparently stopping them from being dicks.

In answer to your question; I think it’s a mixture of deflection, and playing to the prejudices of their base.

Yep, they can no longer blame the EU, so they are now blaming, lefties, the woke and asylum seekers arriving by boat

This is the problem with the word "woke", it means different things to different people.

I'm sure almost everyone here would stand with you in wanting to 'not be a dick', but very few would describe that as woke.

Thats the original meaning of the term but its now morphed into something different and is no longer fit for purpose. Its a bloody awful term anyway.

99% of the time it's used by people who no longer feel comfortable being openly racist, so their only option to express themselves is to insult people who aren't racist.

Yes, woke started off with good intent but as usual it has been taken over by the mouthy and is now a term that has been picked up and used to either belittle or take the high ground, it has been diluted into nothing more than a chant you would hear in the playground.

Woke;

An oxymoron term used to describe the many indoctrinated & radically left-wing people of today's world who are obsessed with jumping on whatever mainstream bandwagon is necessary to feel included, though ironically being the most intolerant and hypocritical people on the planet.

The irony is the term should be used if correctly to describe those who are 'awake' to the modern world however these people are so closed minded they cannot think critically, and are actually 'asleep.'

This is the meaning I see used more often than not.

Ah it was the % that bothered you.

The racist point is one of the major factors. Personally I couldn’t put a figure on it.

Okay. Maybe the percentage is too high. Some guy was using it to describe vegans the other day. Which is probably in the 1%.

But by and large, this is how it seems to be used:

Someone who can no longer openly express hate towards a minority, uses "woke" as an insult to people who aren't prejudice against said minority.

You will find your definition which sums up how woke is being used today, will be kicked around the playground rather than acknowledged.

I often wonder if people are purposely not recognising how things are being interpreted by other people and can't bring themselves to discuss such things openly, or if they are unconsciously incompetent in their awareness to the world around them.

Thats the biggest problem. People arn't open to debate. Anything which is not of their world view is bad and must be cancelled rather than debated and understood.

Social media is a huge driver for this by allowing people so surround themselves in an opinion bubble where they only ever have their own opinions reinforced.

"Thats the biggest problem. People arn't open to debate. Anything which is not of their world view is bad and must be cancelled rather than debated and understood.

Social media is a huge driver for this by allowing people so surround themselves in an opinion bubble where they only ever have their own opinions reinforced.

Amen "

Thats why I like the fab forums. No opinion bubbles here.

Woke is just the latest term for what used to be called 'PC'.

In both cases, it's just a way for the right to put a label on what they don't like - discussion of the real inequalities and discrimination that exists in the world.

The Right doesn't like this, because they want their politics, and the world, to be extremely simple and conform to their preconceptions. They want to be able to identify certain groups who are the enemy, be it groups delineated by class, gender, race, sexuality.

So lefties going around saying those enemies are actually normal people who deserve respect makes them furious.

"Woke;

That is a, admittedly clever, twisting of the meaning that shows how it has been hijacked (predominantly by those with a more right wing political bias and racists).

You are as aware as I that meanings change over time.

Of course (gay being a perfect example) but woke has been weaponised by right wingers and racists.

Yes it's been weaponised.. the point remains that 'woke' can be used by a right winger who isn't racist.

So by saying '99% of the time it's used by racists' proves the point of the definition.

As does 'intolerant, racist fuckwits'

Yes not all people who use woke as an insult is a racist but all racists use woke as an insult!

That could be said for many many words

True but we are discussing “woke” so...?

We are, you agreed that woke is used by racists 99%. I stand by that, that's absolute nonsense"

No I acknowledged that I was not focused on the %. For avoidance of doubt, I have zero idea what % of people who use woke as an insult are racist. But as I said, I am pretty confident the vast majority of racists are now using woke as an insult.

Very few people are actually meaningfully "cancelled"

Ironically it's wailing about being "cancelled" when they're criticised, rather than people actually defending their arguments, that hinders debate.

Someone telling you your opinions are crap is not being cancelled.

No, I think thats far too simplistic. Theres nuance on both sides. Its the extremes of left and rights that do all the shouting and leave most of us in the middle bewildered and angry.

We've now had 2 definitions, 1 from either side of this debate.

Which one is right? I can take a guess where we'll end this poll.

Indeed. But the notion being pushed by the right is that not being racist is 'extreme left'.

All I'm saying is that the only dictionary definition matters.

Whatever you, I, some other fella thinks doesn't matter.

All it means to me is "that person using it as an insult, isn't someone I want to be friends with".

The problem we have here is that there are numerous dictionaries. And dictionaries change their definitions quite often

The far right will use 'woke' as a club to beat people with when they feel their world view is being challenged.

The far left use 'woke' as a club to band together with(see what I did there) in order to shout down and cancel anyone they feel doesnt share their world view.

The English language evolves. Not sure why you think, I think it doesn't.

"Woke" has so many unofficial meanings

So it's worth noting what the dictionary says and not just what randomers think.

I suspect it will die out soon just like you no longer see "snowflake" levelled at people who stand up to racists anymore. As an example.

That was my point, you said anything outside of the dictionary is nonsense, there have been many challenges to words and their meanings as times and attitudes change. I wasn't saying you stifle or prohibit change in any way.

It's not one rule for every change to every word.

Some words evolve naturally. Like the word "sly". Others are evolved purposefully by groups who wish to weaponise it (I don't especially like the term "weaponise" but I can't think of how else to explain my point). Which to me, is nonsensical, and just makes those people look foolish.

In the case of "woke" it's been deliberately altered by the elements of the right to discredit people who they feel threatened by. IE people who are "aware of social injustice, especially racism".

This is not a one way street, for example the words fascist, racist, nazi, phobic are used to attack people that question legitimately a point of view or a reason for doing something.

That has led to a devaluing of those words amongst those who wish to close down speech or thought, just the same as what is happening to woke.

"Reading a lot of discussions that mention about people being 'woke' or 'lefties' being a problem.

BTW I ain't lefty and far far from woke, but I do think about what I see and read."

I’ve hung out in woke crowds. Tend to be filled with abusive, hypocritical narcissists. They believe in a r**e culture because the parasites they hang out with are often sexual abusers, and are often sexual abusers themselves. They’re projecting their own nature onto others.

Also, regardless of who is in power, it is possible to campaign for laws. Politicians will pander for votes, even if those laws are based on bad ideas, bad stats and bad science, especially if it confirms voter bias.

The Duluth model used in domestic violence training is one example of this. Essentially, as a male, I’m more likely to be arrested and charged by a police officer than a woman is if a woman attacks me (this is the case in non-domestic situations as well). Many will say, “It was men who instituted those laws,” but it was privileged, middle- and upper-class, abusive white women who campaigned for those laws, and would have kicked up a fuss if men rightfully said “You’re not worth listening to, as you can’t do basic stats and you’re abusive classists and racists.” The fact is, it’s two different ideologies that end up with the same result they desire: poor and minority men kept in check and in prison, ready to be used for war meat for imperialist expansion (Ukraine war is a good example of this - two sets of racist imperialist powers that want to annex land, each claiming to be a victim).

Heck, look at Eleanor Williams. Loads of parasites think that it shouldn’t be imprisoned, and I can guarantee that it’ll be out in a year or two, get to go on the grifter circuit getting paid to talk about it’s experiences, and get given several dozen council houses. We are told that Eleanor didn’t have the same politics as the rightists that helped ruin Barrow, but does it really? Does it not in fact show that most of the women of the left hate working class and non-white men, much like the right does? That they benefit from the system to a much greater degree than pretty much everyone else in history? They also get more money spent on their healthcare, education and welfare, have a legal system that is reluctant to punish them for crimes, and literally live longer than everyone else, and still complain.

How can it be that the ruling party...the people who can affect these issues has their hands tied by woke and lefty people. They are the ones who can and do dispense laws. Are they possibly using these phrases to deflect from their own failures? BTW I ain't lefty and far far from woke, but I do think about what I see and read.

"We've now had 2 definitions, 1 from either side of this debate.

Which one is right? I can take a guess where we'll end this poll.

The dictionary definition is right. Everything else is nonsense. In my opinion.

When do you change your opinion of a word or expect other too, when the dictionary updates?

That makes me feel as though free thinking is not something you would support?

Blimey, you've made an assumption and a vicious judgement on me just because I advocated for the dictionary definition of a word. Holy fuck.

If you stick religiously to the definition of a word in the dictionary, it would stop challenge to the meaning of words, especially as times change, would you not agree?

Then we found agreement

No, this is factually correct, and any non-biased research actually confirms my point. I would post the links, but I don’t have to do your homework for you.
