Finland joins NATO

A big day today as Finland ends decades of neutrality and formally joins NATO.

A big loss for Putin whose stated aims in his invasion of Ukraine was to "stop NATO expansion."

Odd that a man of his intellect simply doesn't understand that a Sovereign nation has to apply itself to join NATO, NATO doesn't just go walking on in there.

Finland saw what Russia did to Ukraine and re-evaluated its own vulnerability to attack by Russia.

Hey Vlad - you now have more NATO, not less.

I welcome the move but do you think this plays straight into his propaganda speeches that NATO's expansion and activities are undermining Russia's security and interests?

I'm sure he will be making a statement to tell the Russian population that he was right and they need to support the effort.

Because it suited the UK to do nothing at the time. There's a really good book all about it by Heidi Blake called "From Russia With Blood"

On the face of it, yes. But there are a lot of Russians who know exactly what is going on and won’t be fooled by the spin.

He promised his people less NATO and now there is more.

Sweden are not going to be that far behind Finland in the process, so you may be looking at member 32 in the next few weeks

I think a lot of Russians will be looking at how their living standards have tanked more than 'the west's'.

How NATO is pretty much bulking itself up.

Plus Putin breaking the contract with the Russian people ie, no mass conscription.

Yeah, putin will try and spin it, but the way Russians access the free Web means its far less effective now

West London

Putin's attempt to extend his borders has backfired.

Military success for a self-proclaimed superpower scarce.

So desperate that the age of conscription has been increased.

Customers have accelerated transition away from fossil fuels. Despite the global price, Russia is heavily discounting it's price to those outside the West who will by their gas.

Now China's bitch too.

The puzzle is why Saudi Arabia and OPEC+ is helping him with the oil price.

It is pretty much a disaster. He's really not playing 3D chess.

It's fantastic that Finland joined . NATO has been training with them for years. It's a huge black eye for Putin.

1000's of billions of dollars with more added with new members joining on top of their own military expenditure, to move weaponry and run joint war games around Europe and the globe to thwart an adversary with a total military expenditure of 90 billion.

I can see why Mr trump wanted out.

Putin can threaten these other countries all he likes. He’s a bully and thinks he can win against NATO. These countries don’t take the decision lightly to join NATO and it can’t be easy having Russia as a neighbour. We’ve no idea what it’s like to border another country and be under threat of invasion (apart from England and Scotland obviously).

saddly Putin is rapidly finding his forces and equipment are not as good as they think they are when they come up against well trained well equipped and a well motivated military that fight to NATO doctrines .Ukrains forces are only going to improve as thier training and equipment improves .
