Newcastle and Gateshead

They can not do anything via the UN Security Council as Russia have a permanent veto…. So this is a clever get around where they bring it up as an emergency issue on the general floor ( as a foreign policy wonk this is only the 5th time in UN history it has been done this way)

Russia know they are screwed if they lose this war. They know full well that not just 'the west' (a media term), but other countries will consider taking a bite out of them. Hence they cannot be seen to lose, no matter how many lives it costs them. That is the Russian position and in that situation it comes down to which side breaks first, and that will take years.

...unless of course Russian losses continue to outstrip Ukraine's.

likewise the west can't be seen to lose. China is watching from the sidelines as well as I suspect India and Pakistan.

As mentioned before the side that will break first will be us in the west

The russians own all the gas so we are paying them to continue this war also the eu is designed so no one country can carry on a long scale war with others without the backing of the other eu countries.eg

One country has a steel industry.

One country has coal

One country has tech.

One country has amunition works.

The idea was that european countries couldent fight a long drawn out war as it takes all countries to come together in the production chain to arm and fight a war

The russians have tjeire own war machine and need not trade to keep it going

The un should alokate funds and hite mersenaries to go over and fight and bring this war to an end then when the ex soldiers are caught as hapens in war the fighting for will be fully multinational and the un can say no one country has sent any of its armed services.

The world has plenty of ex military mersanerys in every country

"likewise the west can't be seen to lose. China is watching from the sidelines as well as I suspect India and Pakistan. "

Ignore the media take and look at what can be observed. It is Russia vs Ukraine who are getting a fraction of help compared to what NATO countries can do.

China is watching but it is watching Russia. It has seen what a war in its own backyard would look. It also doesn't want to see millions of its young dead on a beach or at the bottom of the China sea.

Invading requires moving an army and China doesn't have the planes or ships to move a big enough force to take Taiwan. You only think China can do this because of what media is telling you. The media are lieing.

You are correct in order for China to take Taiwan it would have to be on the scale of Normandy invasion. It's much easier now to notice a Huge fleet. China does have a lot of ro-ro ships .

The UN condemnation. What purpose does it serve? I'm sure Putin is gutted and it certainly helps bring the war to a swift conclusion

UN is pointless, this could just end up as another Korea.

In history the UN has created or failed to resolve more incidents than it has actually caused.

China does not need war, only trade. Russia, win or lose in Ukraine, would still fall apart. If anything it is this that is more a concern to the west.

It now looks like Belarus is about to change sides and become more pro Western, some say Putin made mistakes invading Ukraine but his biggest mistake was not invading Belarus first and taking full control there. If he had done so then Ukraine would have crumbled as they could not contain a battle front that long.

not so easy. Poland borders both the poles would never let Belarus and Ukraine have influence over the borders. Just go look at their defense spending. They going to be a European powerhouse.

if Russia takes both.. the poles would go ballistic. They looking for excuses now to be let off the leash.

NATO’s has forward presence and posture by establishing multinational battlegroups in Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

There are a heck of a lot of forces poised in the Baltics at the moment. I know one indirectly who is stationed out there. He said, "We are standing by to invited in. Just one stray missile that hits our units, one miss-target and Article 5 gets invoked and we are raring to go in and end this."

Whether it's as simple as that I don't know. I would assume even if a Nato unit got hit accidentally whilst in a Nato country, then provided it was a genuine mistake it wouldn't unleash all hell. But I just don't know.
