Imagine if it was state owned. All that profit for the benefit of all citizens by boosting the coffers of HMT! Or alternatively they could have kept prices down for consumers and made less profit. Either way it would have been a win for the people of the UK rather than shareholders around the World!

Government owned organisations are not set up to make profit. If they do it is displayed as a reduced running cost and the Government simply reduces their funding and spends the surplus Tax money elsewhere. Governments NEVER admit thet took more tax than they needed.

It did not make big profit fa's was just cheaper. But there was also a lot of wastage in the company.

It’s quite sweet that people think Centrica’s profits are because it is better run or somesuch! Price gauging. War profiteering. Whatever it is, consumers lose.

Profits drive efficiencies in many industries a lack of accountability is what can make national industries less efficient.

I would still wager even with that efficiency disparity that as a nation and consumers we would have been better off had the utilities stayed in state ownership.

Revenues not dished out as dividends would have been reinvested or used to reduce customer charges . Either way it would have been better .

Remember in many cases these organisations were run by the same employees and directors both sides of the fence of private and state.

The skill set was the same . Greed changed it when accountability could have without the loss to us all.

Interesting point as weren’t a lot of state shares given away or at least discounted to customers and institutions to get them sold? Maybe I’m remembering building societies too much?? Happy to be corrected .

I do believe core utilities and infrastructure should never have been sold. It has deprived the country of its basic wealth .

No your right my father work for British Gas he was given 2 shears for each year he had worked for them an could buy shears for a pound.

UK plc would not have to pay a penny, UK plc just restarts nationalised enerrgy to attract customers who want nationalised energy.

You can cite free enterprise until the cows come home but when one specific industry is reaping massive profits you have to at least consider slapping a fat tax on them.

At the moment literally everyone else, the typical individual, government departments, and all other companies are feeling the pain of high energy prices.

At the very least mandate that money is invested into green energy supply, more windmills and tide machines. (We think nuclear is the best compromise though).
