At this point, survivalist skills could be of great benefit to people. We currently face many similarities to other complex civilisations that fell in their later decades, and we shouldn't forget that many people in ancient Rome were completely unaware it was going to fall in their lifetime. Others were praying for it though as the currency thought of as absolute kept losing value over the decades while the hierarchy became more and more separate.

Yes, there are a minority of chancers but instead of concentrating on them treat everyone like they are workshy grifters.

State education still as bad as it ever was from the sounds of it. Folk should have the necessary skills and education to be able to get badic jobs these days just from normal state school. Alas, it is not the case.

Benefits should be a fall back for everyone and not a lifestyle choice . I agree with those sentiments.

The incidents of fraud are low so most benefit claimants are legally claiming .

If you compare the fraudsters total amounts compared to the “allowed” tax avoidance I know which needs most attention.

When are they going to get tough on MPs and tough on tax avoidance. .

Easier to pick on those with a low income as they can’t fight back.

There's a whole swathe of the work force that rely on benefits in the firm of whatever tax credits are called now. Many people on benefits are actually working.

This is very true and reflects how poor wages have become compared to the higher earners .

It would be interesting to see how much this costs when businesses are rife with zero hour contracts and poor pay.

The economy has relied on people working for very low wages and topping them up with benefits for a long time. It keeps them 'in their place ' and let's the people who earn enough to live on feel superior to lazy benefit claimants.

It it really that the "benefits system needs overhauling" yet again, or is it that education needs improving or companies need to pay wages that people can live on without state aid, or is it that more effort should be placed on targeting those actually gaming the system?

Remember that it is the party that has been in power for over a decade that last overhauled the benefits system.

But there are lots not in work at all living in social housing and from what I have seen hardly on the bread line.

If we're going to go down the route of scrutinising welfare recipients, we need to set our sights a bit higher than a couple in a council house with a few kids, flatscreen telly and on the fags and booze.

Where's your ambition ? They are small fry. Easy targets. Powerless.

Aim higher. Much higher.

Go right to the top and investigate Corporate Welfare. Google the search term.

Because that is where the largest abuses of the welfare system and tax-payers money is going. It's being hoovered up in colossal amounts by well-connected businesses the length and breadth of the UK. The trough shows no sign of running dry either.

Some folks might deliberately dog-whistle you to look at the small fire in the waste basket. I'd suggest looking at the rest of the building on fire first.

Work skills would help but will not solve the problems.

I could do a 2 year course and be late for the interview then late for work to get sacked and back on benefits. It's a change in mind set that is some how needed to brake the system.
