So I've just come across this on the Beeb.

Mp's have been awarded a pay increase of 2.9% (£2,440 increase to £86,584) by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.

But in the same article it references "Following the annual public sector pay review process, nurses were awarded a 4% increase for 2022/23; teachers received 5%, doctors and dentists 4.5%, prison officers a minimum of 4%, and members of the armed forces 3.75%. Police officers got a pay rise of at least £1.900."

So.. unless I'm reading it wrong this is the pay review? MP's have had theirs sorted but those striking didn't make headlines?

I don't quite understand the point you're trying to make regarding headlines.

I think the only headline required is that these snakes have got themselves a bigger wage rise than they've awarded any public sector worker,maybe not percentage wise but certainly monetary wise. 2.9% of their salary is more than 5% of. Nurses salary for example.

The slimy bastards are laughing at us.

Since 2010 an MPs salary has increased by just under £20 k ..

Police and firefighters have fallen by 13 and 12% respectively, other public sector workers have also seen their pay fall in the same time ..

I was browsing, saw the headline then the settlement for sectors who (for the majority) are on strike. It seemed odd the headline wouldn't say read along the line of IPS recommends MP, Nurse, Teachers, Police pay rises.

Which is why I was asking if I had read it wrong.

MPs get a pay rise less in percentage terms than that offered to public sector workers?

Or 2000 NHS managers get paid more than an MPs' salary?

Or MPs get an 8% pay cut as their pay award is less than inflation?

it's slightly odd... But given how some have claimed pay rises drive inflation, any increase could have been seen as being controversial.

It does look like MPs pay is based on last year's public sector increases, so.MPs always lag a year.

While it's the agreed approach, I'd challenge it's fair... Tho that will depend on the average and spread of public sector workers v MPs.

Shit the bed only 50% turn out to a general election every 4 years and you want the public to vote on a pay rise turn out of probably about 10% pointless

The question to ask is how are the pay rises being funded ? Is the govt providing extra funding to cover these rises or as with the teachers last 5% pay rise the schools are left to fund it themselves from already over stretched budgets ? Also think these are advisory from the pay review board the govt can choose to ignore them and give a lower award as they have done before .

The whole pay review site suggests that MP increases are linked to public sector so would like to work thru how it has landed so far apart

(It could be trying to estimate a more personal inflation rate.... Lower paid will see their costs increase more than the higher paid ... Which is why ok not sure even the current approach is fair)

edit: there may had been an uplift in 2015 as part of wider changes... So may need a wider look than just pay.

Google it . The range of nurses is a negative of between 8 and 20% the higher being the unions numbers .

MPs real term rises again freely available in all media.

They have repeatedly ignored the recommendations for civil service rises which they had previously agreed to do but strangely accepted their own .

Must be a good reason I’m sure.

To put it into context to match the nurses the MPs would be looking at around a 30% reduction on their salary today to match the same situation of the nurses. . Sobering thought.
