"Ah but if maths _must_ be studied till 18, and no maths teachers are available, then no doubt they can say the schools are failing in their duty. And sell off education to some dodgy mates of theirs." Couldn’t agree more with the sentiment! It Tory 101.

"They've already sold them by back door all are academy's now. Begging for money off patents if their child wants to do art ect. " Don’t forget free schools. I honestly believe a Tory thinks that if anything is public, then how can they turn a profit on it. It’s utter madness.

"Maths is more useful than a lot of the other bull shit young folk study these days. Those who don't want to do it can still always learn trades." But why is it necessary to study it until 18? Most of the GCSE maths syllabus is toss that will never be used in real life. I speak as someone who did Pure and Applied Maths A Level and then Further Engineering Maths at university. I also coached my daughter in GCSE maths last year, helping her achieve the highest possible grade.

"If you really like Maths Three maths teachers in the staff room. and a teaching assistant, When the kettle breaks. Each teacher gives the assistant £10 they go to the shop with £30 and spends £25 on a new kettle. On retuning to school and making the tea the teachers say where is the change? ( tight as ever ). The assistant gives the £5 change to the teachers as they each take a pond and tell the assistant to keep £2 for going. Hang on this is not right one pipes up, we all paid £9 each. 3 x 9 = £27 + £2 (the assistant kept) = £29 where’s has the other pound ?????????????????????????" Any decent maths teacher wouldn't try to add the £2 kept by the assistant to their £27 outlay, they would instead subtract the £2 to get £25, the cost of the kettle.

Total spend is therefore £30 - £3 = £27 £9 x 3 is also £27 Kettle cost £25 + £2 delivery = £27 Which bit doesn't add up?

You should have released all your fingers and got to 6. Now hold out the fingers on the right hand, there are 5. 6 + 5 = 11 but you only have 10 fingers... boom

Once you realise the ease of doing so, it goes some way to explaining the evolution of duodecimal dimensions and quantities. Counting up to twelve in this manner also frees your other hand to move or pack items you might be counting. I was shown this skill by East Africans. Is it not thought that mankind first evolved in East Africa? Perhaps the region was also the cradle of duodecimal counting.

I'd have imagined base 12 numbers rather than ten of it was driven by counting.

"Back on topic, I believ it's more important the type of maths we teach. Stats is important While mental maths is less important, sense checking maths is a skill. And knowing what maths to use and when. Trig and algebra and calculus.... Less so. " Accounting would be a help to young people.
