Conservative controlled Thurrock Borough Council just issued a S114 notice of, in effect, insolvency.

6th richest country in the world (5th until recently)!!!

But they have built lovely offices with the money. They also allowed the scum of the East End to be moved here, pre Olympics. So I imagine someone won. Just like any other badly managed budget.

I can see a similar thing happening with Shropshire council. They bought a shopping Center in Shrewsbury and it was later valued at half what they paid

The same council is now pushing ahead to build the “North West Relief Road” (NWRR) and it was estimated to cost £84,329,000 in 2020. Campaigners and professional road development consultants have said it’s not viable and the cost is predicted to double by the time it’s open.

I won’t go into the fact we are in a climate emergency and the government has suggested this sort of thing is stopped.

So don’t be surprised if Shropshire council is bankrupt within the next few years

Yes Croydon have done it 3 years running.

What I would really like to know is how the people who made the decision that caused these councils to be in this state cannot be held accountable and charged with something to stop others making the same stupid mistakes

Don’t worry there will be more bankrupt councils b the end of 2024.

The tories are going into a scorched earth policy mode.

They know they are going to lose the next Council elections and the next GE, so they are going to ensure that everything is burned down to the ground. Public services, the NHS, policing, prisons, Immigration.

It means the next government will have to borrow massive amounts of money or increase taxes further to rebuild the nation.

Then it will just give ammunition to when they get back on, the will lie and cheat their way back into peoples graces again, then the same thing again.

Not surprising, tax payers money is spent too easily and too freely on the wrong things all over the place. Not even counting all the money paid to prop up cronies and sent abroad.

The authority's finance chief has set out plans to get the budget back under control.

Any overspend will need to be met from the council's reserves and councillors will discuss the report on Wednesday”

Pretty scary stuff especially when they want to build a new road that will cost a estimated £80M

Won’t get built

But the really scary thing is the amount that the bankrupt councils want to put the Council tax up by. Croydon has set it at 15%.

I would like to agree with you but I wouldn’t bet on it. There had been hundreds of objections but they have been talking about building it for 15 years.

I suspect it will be built.

The council is pushing for it because then it can sell off that around it at a premium for new housing developments.

Trouble is councils seem to live hand to mouth. Something is wrong for that to be the sensible way of budgeting. There appears to be little forward planning or risk asdessment on budgets.

Get money. Spend money. Repeat.

Seems Lancashire and Preston Council's don't have such woes.

Although I wonder the impact £16.2m would have had on Social Housing around here and significantly increased Council Tax.
