Costa Blanca Spain...

With apologies to the Tremeloes.

I've been waiting for a couple of days for someone to mention this one but it seems that the usual EU and/or socialist fanboys have chosen to ignore it.

Greek socialist EU vice president Eva Kaili is among a clutch of arrests in Belgium (and elsewhere) in connection with a middle east (many are reporting Qatari) bribery scandal.

So far around 1.5 million Euro's in cash has been seized, including 500,000 in a suitcase being carried by her father.

She and her partner are now both banged up in a Belgian jail and enquiries are ongoing. With some reports saying that this is the tip of a huge iceberg.

Now some of you may think it trivial but I can't help wondering what the reaction on here would have been if it was a British Tory MP caught with his/her fingers in the till.

Double digit number of threads most "closed got too big" methinks.

An MEP describes it as fundamentally corrupt and for a change they are not talking about the UK. The police need to be able to do their job (hopefully they are not part of the corruption) and route this out. The sooner the better as it does not look good for the EU to complain to member states when they are corrupt themselves

Corruption os the scourge of politics.

If this is happening in the EU, there should be hell to pay. If it happens if the UK there's hoidl be hell to pay.

Of course if it happened here, the thread would blow up. It's a largely UK site.

I'd hope we have controls in place to avoid this. Especially after cash for questions.

My cynical view is we have loopholes we need to look hard at.

We also need to consider doing a deep dive into Qatari investments here. The FIFA shabmles suggest they are normally more subtle than suitcases.

I could be wrong but i would hazard a guess that there are more threads and posts focusing on UK govt corruption than EU member state govt corruption because...we are mostly people who live in the UK! Could be wrong of course!

To add to the discussion though...

Probably every govt in the entire world has some corrupt politicians and officials. Being in a position of power and influence will make you a target to corrupt. If you are corruptible then ot becomes inevitable.

I am very doubtful ANYONE who supported the UK being in the EU actually thought it was spotless and devoid of corruption, that would simply be naive.

It would depend on the context of "bung" the money has certainly been earmarked to be chucked in that direction. With the EU's (and the Marcos family) track record I would love to see how it is accounted for.

I'm not bothered tbh. I do find people interesting and the language of your post caught my eye.

I couldn't have guessed from your post that one intracountry union has agreed to invest in another intracountry union to build trading routes infrastructure.

It sounded a lot more nefarious.

Now, will some of this money be wasted or go to friends of family. I would not be surprised. That's the unfortunate nature of poliyics across the world ATM. See also PPE.

But that's not the same as full on bungs.

"With apologies to the Tremeloes.

Now some of you may think it trivial but I can't help wondering what the reaction on here would have been if it was a British Tory MP caught with his/her fingers in the till.

Double digit number of threads most "closed got too big" methinks. "

It was mentioned in another thread.

They have been caught pretty much red-handed.

The Greek VP has been stood-down.

Both the Police and EU appear to have done their jobs so far.

We will wait to see if there is a prosecution.

If not, we can talk about corruption. It's no longer "our" corruption though, is it? Are you concerned about corruption in Namibia?

What are the reports that this is the "tip of a huge iceberg"? Sounds like hearsay and speculation. Are there reports that do not indicate this?

If it was a British MP of any colour who sould be working on our behalf then they have a substantive effect on the British tax payer and of greater concern. Such as Lady Mone, amongst others. Is that also "tip of a huge iceberg"?

Is there corruption and bad behaviour in politics? Yes. Is there evidence that something is being done about it in the EU? So far, yes. In the UK? So far, no.

We can all draw whatever conclusions we wish to.

Working with them is fine but why bung them 10 billion of the EU taxpayers hard earned?

Maybe "Bongbong" was a spelling mistake.

I'm thinking it could be time to get into the footwear business. "

You seem confused.

The UK left the EU in order to be able to better trade with such countries on the other side of the world.

The Philippines is one member of this association. Is there a particular reason that he is worthy of specific destain?

Is there any geopolitical reason why the EU may be seeking to become more influential in South East Asia which is geographically close to China and Taiwan and is not condemning Russia's war in Ukraine?

Ironically, it does not appear to have gone down particularly well within ASEAN anyway.

Why don’t you move back to the UK and get away from the EU?

Wondered when you would chuck that in. You usually do at some point.

Uplands maybe, but where did you get sunny from? I'll stick to Spain thanks 19 deg and sunny today. Pool is a bit chilly but the hot tub ready for a bubble later.

Yes it's a bit warmer in the winter but too bloody hot in the summer. Hence winter world cup in its neighbour.

As for the rest of it, just lots of bling and very little else.

For that I can go to Vegas and get the Grand Canyon as a bonus.

We had 3 days there as a stopover on the way to Singapore and it was more than enough.

We spend most of the winter in Spain, I certainly wouldn't fancy it there.

"In other news... Former PM gets teaching job in UAE.

It's shit like this that makes me wonder if our folk are just better at laundering.

Boris gets paid £250,000 per speech whilst he is being paid to ‘supposedly’ be an MP "

. The difference is that any money received by Boris is fully declared and all transactions are open and honest. The subject matter of the thread was cash transfers of circa 1.7 million pounds. The MEPs concerned have also been arrested. Whilst an arrest is not proof of wrong doing most reasonable people would regard moving 1.7 million in cash as being highly suspicious if your are an MEP. Are you table to explain why the movement was in cash and not a bank transfer. ?

as far as I see noone is defending those accused. (or at least on to the extent of let's prove guilt)

Declaring the gigs doesn't in itself make them above board. Its better than nothing as allows scrutiny. The risk is these payments come years after any deal has been done.

Now, I'm not saying that they are dodgy. Nor the teaching gig. Just how easy would it be for a PM to give a deal to a company and then, years later, be rewarded with a cushty job paying 250k for thirty minutes work.

"With apologies to the Tremeloes.

This is really funny.

Why would you assume that only "socialist fanboys" are against government corruption?

Because if you vote for a political party you support them regardless of all consequences.

The OP assumes that everyone thinks and behaves in the same way that they do.

Doesn't that make the OP guilty of the very same behaviour that cerrain profiles aim at Tory voters?

I've never seen a profile say 'no lefties' but seen plenty that say 'no tories'"

. Am interesting point . The profiles that say no Tories tend to be very narrow minded people who are simply unable to accept that people may have different opinions to theirs. Ironically they like to present themselves as being tolerant and open minded. Disagree with their opinion and this tolerance and open mindedness promptly dissappears and they just snear at those with whom they disagree .

"With apologies to the Tremeloes.

This is really funny.

Except the OP is writing this post accusing others of hypocrisy, so it's immediately completely back-to-front.

You have, if I follow, agreed that the OP is behaving in the same way, so you are agreeing with me...or have I missed something?"

The OP did start the thread accusing others of hypocrisy, can't you see why?

You, yourself started a thread a few days back about unfounded allegations into Raab bullying staff. At the time you exaggerated the numbers stating there was 10 complaints, yet the report says 8.

You say nothing about this which looks like it has actual evidence to go with the arrests.

You sure you can't see why the OP would accuse others of hypocrisy?

I personally have never seen you start a thread about any corruption other than Tory corruption. That's the hypocrisy the OP is talking about.

In fairness, in the UK anyway, most of the corruption is coming from the Tories. Plus they're in power, so maybe should be running the country instead of lining their pockets, bullying people, partying through the pandemic lockdowns etc etc.

There is lots of hypocrisy. But I don't think the evidence on someone starting threads about government corruption here, and not starting threads about corruption in Greece is really a good example. I'm assuming no one has started threads about corruption in Botswana.

I think suggesting only "socialist fanboys" are against government corruption is silly.

Besides, I don't remember anyone here expressing socialist views.

Whether we like it or not, the EU is still a huge topic of discussion. Plenty of people on both sides start threads on the EU.

The corruption is at the top of the EU, not Greece per se. Botswana is a silly example don't you think? We could choose a large number of countries but they don't hold the same weight as the EU discussion.

The rest I probably agree with.

Yes, Botswana was deliberately silly to highlight the equivalence placed by the OP between Greece/EU corruption and British government corruption in terms of importance to people. IE suggesting socialists or EU supporting people should discuss both, or else it's hypocrisy.

I don't think you should have to discuss every piece of corruption in the world/EU/country to have valid concerns about corruption in our own government.

The OP has been equally hypocritical in not having started a thread about Raab or Mone or Braverman or Patel or Johnson's bullying or accepting money or holidays or providing functioning PPE at great expense during a pandemic by pulling strings.

All a bit circular and back-to-front.

As I stated already.

"Only" eight accusations of corruption against Raab rather the 10 I'd calculated between multiple stories. Sorry. That makes in much better for the Justice Minister in a "Government of Integrity" to not feel it necessary to step aside until the investigation is completed.

Are you suggesting that it is a requirement on me to describe what the evidence is against this Greek MP and who else is involved?

Really?

I am inclined to start threads about the corruption that affects me directly. That happens to mainly involve the Government of our country which appears to provide a lot of discussion worthy topics.

What matters of domestic corruption should I be posting threads on?

I have never, personally, seen you post on a thread criticising this Government or any of its scandals.

If people find those with right wing views intellectually unattractive then so be it. There are plenty of profiles that say no Asians or want black men only. Perhaps it's also to do with what they do or do not find physically attractive? Some people are unable to describe what they do or do not find attractive at all. What's there problem, eh?

Not sure where the relevance to 'no tories' 'no Asians or black men only' comes in seeing as those are both physical attractions. Voting Tory isn't a physical attraction to last time I looked.

Yes, you have done this before. Made some confused points, then got upset when I ask you to clarify what you actually mean.

What did you mean by your post. Right it in simple terms please.

You are, apparently, accusing me of hypocrisy for not posting a critical story about the EU. I have explained why but you have not responded as to why the OP or you do not post critical stories about this Government. Regardless of what you have written just now that is true isn't it, just as I have written in this thread and others that there has been corruption in the EU uncovered and being prosecuted.

You don't have to justify why you haven't and neither do I. I am simply making the point in contrast to your own.

Having accused me of hypocrisy and apparently taking exception to me posting matters of interest to me I am interested to know what similar matters in domestic integrity that I should be posting to provide adequate balance. Can you give me some suggestions?

What I interpreted this phrase as meaning: "You say nothing about this which looks like it has actual evidence to go with the arrests." is that you expect me to provide some more information on the EU case. It makes no other sense to me. What did you mean by it?

You have been critical of profiles saying that they don't want to meet Tories, haven't you. You understand the other references now?

Double digit number of threads most "closed got too big" methinks.

I've never seen a profile say 'no lefties' but seen plenty that say 'no tories'

Except the OP is writing this post accusing others of hypocrisy, so it's immediately completely back-to-front.

You have, if I follow, agreed that the OP is behaving in the same way, so you are agreeing with me...or have I missed something?

The OP did start the thread accusing others of hypocrisy, can't you see why?

You, yourself started a thread a few days back about unfounded allegations into Raab bullying staff. At the time you exaggerated the numbers stating there was 10 complaints, yet the report says 8.

You say nothing about this which looks like it has actual evidence to go with the arrests.

You sure you can't see why the OP would accuse others of hypocrisy?

I personally have never seen you start a thread about any corruption other than Tory corruption. That's the hypocrisy the OP is talking about.

Plenty of questions as per without actually addressing what I posted.

Have I at any point stated you should only post on specific matters?

You may not have seen me criticise the government but you wouldn't have seen me criticise others either. If you have read some of my replies on this thread though, you'll see that I've agreed that most of the corruption in this country is Tory.

Not sure where the relevance to 'no tories' 'no Asians or black men only' comes in seeing as those are both physical attractions. Voting Tory isn't a physical attraction to last time I looked. "

Ah wait, you think that intellectual attraction is not as important as physical attraction.

I get it. You be you.

"With apologies to the Tremeloes.

You understand the other references now?"

You obviously confuse me for someonenwho is upset, because I'm certainly not upset, I'm here having a discussion on the Internet, that doesn't upset me.

I also took no exception to you posting, I was simply pointing out that it can be seen as hypocrisy, you don't agree and that's cool. I won't lose any sleep over it.

I didn't at any point ask you to provide evidence, I simply stated that the Raab accusations have no evidence but the EU VP case has evidence. Not only did you choose to ignore the EU VP case but you exaggerated the Raab case, without evidence.

You are equally hypocritical, as is the OP. Correct?

I did not deliberately exaggerate by two individuals. I counted up different reports with different numbers that made ten to me but we're eight, for which I apologised. Why the need to characterise a mistake?

The Raab case has the evidence of eight people. Is that inadequate for even a "Government of integrity" to act upon?

Integrity, which is what that thread is about, would mean that someone with that characteristic in a public position would step back from that role until resolved.

You have a different definition of integrity, it seems.

The EU matter is also legally untested yet, even though the evidence is damning and the MEP in question has been removed from her roll. Why should that be of more concern?

Don't bleat about your words being "twisted" like some sort of a victim.

Write better words if you mean something else.

Follow the thread of your own discussion. Physical and intellectual attraction are of equal importance. If someone finds your views on politics unattractive it's no different to them finding you physically unattractive, is it? You are still not of interest.

I get it. You be you.

Yet again, you take words and try to twist them. I didn't say anything about intellectual attraction not being important. You brought up physical attraction, the way someone votes isn't physical

Too add to that, are you saying that anyone who votes Tory isn't intellectual? If so, by whose standard? "

What are you talking about?

Not intellectually attractive means not attractive to the mind. Not mentally attractive. No vibe. Not compatible in the head.

How thin skinned are you?

"Anyway. The latest wheeze from Brussels is to bung 10+ billion at something called ASEAN to combat climate change in Asia.

Who's in charge of it? Imelda Marcos's son who has the nickname Bongbong.

Why don’t you move back to the UK and get away from the EU?

Wondered when you would chuck that in. You usually do at some point.

You’re the one mowing about the EU? You could move back to the sunlit uplands of Brexit Britain

Uplands maybe, but where did you get sunny from? I'll stick to Spain thanks 19 deg and sunny today. Pool is a bit chilly but the hot tub ready for a bubble later.

Enjoy, I am jealous, going to Dubai next week though, I can get my sun ‘fix’ over there

Must admit that I hated the place.

It’s amazing, guaranteed sunshine, far warmer and sunnier than where you are

Yes it's a bit warmer in the winter but too bloody hot in the summer. Hence winter world cup in its neighbour.

As for the rest of it, just lots of bling and very little else.

For that I can go to Vegas and get the Grand Canyon as a bonus.

We had 3 days there as a stopover on the way to Singapore and it was more than enough.

We spend most of the winter in Spain, I certainly wouldn't fancy it there.

Amazing bars and nightclubs, amazing restaurants , beautiful women, sunshine all year , what isn’t there to like

Tbf. I've never been but Mrs has and said she wouldn't be in a rush to go back. Only thing that she enjoyed was the weather.

Without the sun nobody would go, but you can say that about most places "

Lake District? Scottish Highlands? Snowdonia?

To mention just a few.

"With apologies to the Tremeloes.

I've never seen a profile say 'no lefties' but seen plenty that say 'no tories'

Personal preference, freedom of choice

Absolutely, I'm not against any profile saying that. But it's just the same behaviour in reverse"

Of course it was the same behaviour in reverse.

That was my intention.

With only a very few exceptions this forum has just become a left wing echo chamber.

Almost every thread has got an anti Tory narrative but when something in the news shines a bad light on the Labour party or (as in this case) the EU. Then the silence is deafening.

One thing I have noticed is that in the last year or so the number of threads, posts, and posters has diminished considerably on here.

Even I don't bother much with this section. Just chuck an occasional hand grenade in from time to time to keep you on your toes.

This thread seems to have done the trick.

"Left wing" to you but a long way from actually being left wing.

Being opposed to the behaviour of this corrupt and incompetent Government does not make anybody "left wing".

There is so much bad behaviour around the group of people actually in charge and making decisions about this country that directly affects us. Other stories pretty much pale into insignificance.

Please provide some examples of big stories that have been ignored? Why haven't those who support the Conservative party if so significant? Were they not debated when they were?

This bad behaviour has also been ignored or defended by this same Government and posters.

It is just as likely that at some point there is so much evidence of how bad this Government and the Tory party is that it cannot be defended anymore.

You seem to view it as an echo-chamber and in some way anti-Tory. The reality is just as likely (especially given the polling) that many supporters can and will no longer defend the Conservative party for their behaviour or competence and are equally disillusioned with Brexit and their is literally bad news about the party stacked up.

You are continuing to defend bad people making bad decisions for our country. That is your right, but accept the criticism of that behaviour without making accusations about individual motivation.

Happy to discuss the odd case of corruption in other UK non-govermental parties or corruption in other countries. But to pretend it should have equal weighting to our own governments on going corruption seems silly.

You are spectacularly confused.

Let's provide a very simple example.

100 verifiable stories about the party in power.

10 verifiable stories about all other parties combined.

A. I am not a news organisation so I don't need to provide "balance" anymore than you or the OP have done

B. There is no "balance" with that ratio

C. The party of Government affects my life and has access to taxpayer funds. Nobody else does

D. You have been unable to point to any equivalent scandals except one in the EU which everyone has acknowledged

E. It is not "hypocritical" to choose to post what is of interest to you

F. It is "hypocritical" to treat similar circumstances differently. Everyone who you seem to believe is "on the left" (which I continue to find a hilarious characterisation compared to who has been driven out of the Conservative party) has condemned both the many cases of poor behaviour Government and the one EU case that has been raised. Only you and other "on the right" seem to need withhold judgement on Conservatives but immediately condemn the MEP without trial

"Medice, cura te ipsum"

Google will help you understand what that means beyond a direct translation

She and her partner are now both banged up in a Belgian jail and enquiries are ongoing. With some reports saying that this is the tip of a huge iceberg.

Now some of you may think it trivial but I can't help wondering what the reaction on here would have been if it was a British Tory MP caught with his/her fingers in the till.

Double digit number of threads most "closed got too big" methinks.

I've never seen a profile say 'no lefties' but seen plenty that say 'no tories'

Personal preference, freedom of choice

Absolutely, I'm not against any profile saying that. But it's just the same behaviour in reverse

To me, this forum and Fab as a whole is a hotbed of right wing and the occasional far right wing people. But again not sure why you imply only left wing people have a problem with corruption.

Not sure why you think there should be equal attention placed on the odd case of corruption from Labour or from other countries as is placed on our government who have so many scandals it's hard to keep up.

I think your last paragraph pretty much sums up what I tried to point out in the OP.

Any whiff of corruption in the Tory party (real or imagined) is blown out of all proportion yet when it's Labour and the EU. It's SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

On the upside though the echo in this forum is getting fainter and fainter.

You really should look for a bigger audience.

I think you will have to accept that anti EU Tory shills are in the minority on here and in ‘real world’ . Last time I checked we had left the EU and fulfilled the result of a referendum. How can you possibly claim that those supporting leaving the EU are in a minority. "

Because people change their minds, Pat. Particularly when they find out that they've been lied to.
