Boosting Defence Spending

Should we scrap one of our Bank Holidays, in order to boost defence spending?

Far-fetched?

That's exactly what the Danish Goverment are proposing. The coalition Government want to scrap a day off, in order to boost productivity and the economy, and use the gains to add to the defence budget.

I don't want to lose a day off just to boost BAE share prices. No thanks.

Merky, it’s only a good idea if was proposed by a right leaning government, if it was left leaning you’d be up in arms about it.

As someone that spent 25 years working in the Defence industry, then I welcome any defence spending by any (right minded) Government, whatever colour they are.

It was posted more of a general interest post, as its radical in this day and age.

Simple answer.

No

Long answer.

Maybe cut the Bank holiday for all workers who are mod and defence financed.

Once again I can see the working people losing out.

You know what would be radical, the government actually increasing taxes to cover their spend, instead of making cuts to services we require.

This right wing myth that lower taxes will some how fund the requirements of this country is a lie.

There is no such thing as a free lunch and the sooner people recognise this, the sooner we can rebuild this nation.

For perspective it costs the USA about $6.4 million per day to run one of their Navy carrier groups. That's thousands of personnel and multiple large ships, and aircraft. We spend about £5.6 million (was it?) on putting illegal entry migrants in hotels.

There's many more worse areas where money is wasted too (like the Covid payments to businesses that didn't get vetted properly).

Since you hate money being wasted so much, you'll be really shocked when you learn how much Truss blew in 1 day...

The really bizarre thing, was that Truss was proposing to spend more - which at any other time would have been anathema to the Tories.

Sadly all economies are beholden to the Banks and the markets so the policy never had a chance, the Tories quickly did an about turn returning to the control of the Banks.

When and if Labour get in, policies will largely remain unchanged for the same reasons. Spending has become a dirty word, as we move closer to the US model & we strive to cut centralised government spending, and individuals become entirely responsible for funding everything individually (education, healtcare, retirement).

And if you can't afford to, you fall by the wayside...
